WATERLOO | A weekend of teaching is bringing 1,600 Jehovah’s Witnesses to the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center starting Saturday.
The annual Circuit Assembly for Jehovah’s Witnesses living in northeast and central Iowa will continue through Sunday.
Louis Cutwright, a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Virden Creek Congregation in Waterloo, said delegates will come from as far away at Des Moines, Ames, Vinton and Cedar Rapids. Circuit overseer Travis Smith will lead the assembly along with various speakers.
“There’s about 21 or 22 congregations in this circuit,” said Cutwright, a retired Waterloo city building official who helped with planning to bring the event here. He noted that the circuit has about 1,650 “dedicated and baptized” members, so the assembly will include nearly all of them.
The event is sponsored by the New York City-based Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
The assembly follows a one-day April gathering of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Waterloo. Cutwright said officials chose to return after that assembly went smoothly.
“The hospitality of the city was outstanding,” he said.
“God’s word is beneficial for teaching” will be the assembly’s theme, based on the Bible verse 2 Timothy 3:16.
“The purpose of the circuit assembly is to educate and enhance the members’ appreciation of what God wants of them and what the Bible says is the correct way of life,” said Cutwright. “It’s a book that shows a way of life that’s pleasing to God.”
The assembly, which is open to the public at no cost, begins at 9:40 a.m. both days. It will end at 3:55 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
The Cedar Valley has four Jehovah’s Witnesses congregations, including a Spanish-speaking group.
