The reason for this is actually rooted in psychology. Smiling in primates - and often in humans - is a sign of appeasement. It's saying "I'm very happy with what you're doing." Because of that, smiling when there is little reason to smile can be seen as a sign of compliance. It is thus a sign of low status. In other words, fashion models don't smile because it makes them seem lower in status. That's exactly how they don't want to appear. They want to project an image of being high status. They want you to think "I want to be that girl. I want to have the status she has. Maybe if I buy the clothes or makeup she has on I'll have her status too." …

(CNN)After a difficult, monthlong journey from Central America to the US-Mexico border, dozens of asylum-seeking migrants are vowing to remain outside an immigration processing center until "every last one" is admitted into the country, an organizer with the caravan said late Sunday. It was the final leg for some in the caravan of hundreds of migrants, which had reached Tijuana on Tuesday. Alex Mensing, an organizer with Pueblo Sin Fronteras, which assembled the caravan, said 50 migran…

Planting trees is a good idea for many environmental and aesthetic reasons. But doing it by hand can be expensive, time-consuming, and sometimes dangerous, especially if you want the trees to be in remote, forbidding places. That's why several startups are looking at using drones to do the work. We wrote last year about BioCarbon Engineering, a U.K. firm with a tree-planing drone prototype. Now comes DroneSeed, a Pacific Northwest startup with a working UAV and two pilot customers. See its new video here: BEN SCHILLER 05.31.16 1:00 PM Planting trees is a good idea for many environmental and aesthetic reasons. But doing …

Prince George and Princess Charlotte had visited their brother at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital, London. Leaving the hospital Prince William said the couple were very happy, before holding up three fingers and joking he had "thrice the worry now".
