Date: April 4, 2017 Source: American Chemical Society Summary: Transparent biosensors embedded into contact lenses could soon allow doctors and patients to monitor blood glucose levels and a host of other telltale signs of disease without invasive tests. Scientists say the bio-sensing lenses also could potentially be used to track drug use or serve an early detection system for cancer and other serious medical conditions. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Safety Council and adopted by many states. Unfortunately, a tragic example of distracted driving comes from Texas just last week. A 20-year-old man was texting while driving, and a witness following the driver called 9-1-1 to report him. Sadly, the police didn’t arrive in time to stop the driver from swerving over the centerline and colliding head on with a church van full of people. Thirteen people died in that collision, the texting driver remains hospitalized. You may notice posters on distracted driving in your offices. Your local safety committee is helping spread the word on the…

Most mornings as I leave the Y after my swim and shower, I cross paths with a coterie of toddlers entering with their caregivers for a kid-oriented activity. I can’t resist saying hello, requesting a high-five, and wishing them a fun time. I leave the Y grinning from ear to ear, uplifted not just by my own workout but even more so by my interaction with these darling representatives of the next generation. What a great way to start the day! When I told a fellow swimmer about this experience and mentioned that I was writing a column on the health benefits of positive emotions, she asked, “What do you do about people who are always negative?” She was referring to …

The work could have implications for our understanding of neurodevelopmental processes or traumatic brain injuries in humans. Troy Ghashghaei, associate professor of neurobiology at NC State, studies the ways neurons develop and integrat…

wildcat2030: See on Scoop.it - The Future of Water & Waste A UK-based team of researchers has created a graphene-based sieve capable of removing salt from seawater. The sought-after development could aid the millions of people without ready access to clean drinking water. The promising graphene oxide sieve could be highly efficient at filtering salts, and will now be tested against existing desalination membranes. It has previously been difficult to manufacture graphene-based barriers on an industrial scale. Reporting their results in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, scientists from the University of Manchester, led by Dr Rahul Nair, shows how the…
