Through many advisers there is victory.—Prov. 24:6. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2017/4/18 Older ones in our midst remember when congregations had a congregation servant rather than a body of elders, when countries had a branch servant rather than a Branch Committee, and when direction was given by the president of the Watch Tower Society rather than by a clearly established Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Although all these devoted brothers were supported by faithful assistants, one person was basically responsible for making decisions in the congregations, at the branch offices, and at world headquarters. During the 1970’s, adjustments were made …

Jack and Sandy Daniels never intended to move when they built their home in Rockton — north of Rockford — more than 40 years ago. “Nobody thinks they’re going to get old,” Jack said. But as their children grew older, they found that so did they. The half acre of land with mature trees they had enjoyed over the years became more difficult to maintain in their 70s. With one daughter living in Milwaukee and the other living in the Illinois Valley — each a 1.5 hour drive away — the Daniels couple came to a crossroads. “We recognize that frailties come with age, and we didn’t want to be a burden on our kids,” Jack said. “We did not want …

A blind little girl sat on the steps of a building with a hat by her feet, and a doll in her hands. She held up a sign which say: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. Soon, the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind girl. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The girl recognised his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?" The man said, "I onl…

U.S. says Russia's Jehovah's Witnesses ban is latest sign Moscow views independent religions as a threat The Russian justice ministry’s call for the country’s Jehovah’s Witnesses headquarters to be shut down represents an attempt to “eliminate the legal existence” of the religion, said the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). The USCIRF is a bipartisan federal commission, with commissioners appointed by the president, the Senate and the House. The justice ministry suspended the Jehovah’s Witnesses headquarters in St. Petersburg last month, alleging that its activities…

“JUST THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT WAS EXPECTED” NEVER GIVE UP! Dr. N. S. Gordienko, a professor at Herzen University in St. Petersburg, described in his book what the persecutors accomplished. He wrote: “The results were just the opposite of what was expected; they wanted to weaken the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the USSR, but in fact they only strengthened it. In new settlements where no one had heard of their religious confession, Jehovah’s Witnesses ‘infected’ the locals by their faith and their loyalty to it.” Many Witnesses quickly adapted to their new circumstances. Small congregations were organized, and territory was assigned. Nikolai Kalibaba says: …

Trust in Jehovah—The God of “Times and Seasons” “He is changing times and seasons, removing kings and setting up kings.”—DAN. 2:21. How should recognizing that Kingdom rule has begun and that we are living in “the time of the end” affect us? (Dan. 12:4) Many see the worsening world conditions yet fail to acknowledge that these developments fulfill Bible prophecy regarding the last days. They may expect this system to fall apart one day or may believe that somehow human efforts will achieve “peace and security.” (1 Thess. 5:3) But what about us? If we recognize that we are living deep in the last days of Satan’s world, should we not endeavor to use th…

"[Moses] considered the reproach of the Christ to be riches greater than the treasures of Egypt."—Heb. 11:26. Imitate the Faith of Moses “By faith Moses, when grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.”—HEBREWS 11:24. MOSES knew the kind of future that Egypt could offer him. He saw the large, beautiful houses of the wealthy. He had been adopted by the king’s family. He “was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians,” which probably included the arts, astronomy, mathematics, and other sciences. (Acts 7:22) It would have been very easy for him to have the money, power, and privileges that a common Egyptian could never have. D…

A New World of Justice The Bible tells us what kind of rulership we can expect, rulership that all righthearted individuals now long for. Psalm 145:16 will then find fulfillment in its completest sense: “You [Jehovah God] are opening your hand andsatisfying the desire of every living thing.” Moreover, Isaiah 32:1 says: “Look! A king [Christ Jesus in heaven] will reign for righteousness itself; and as respects princes [Christ’s earthly representatives], they will rule as princes for justice itself.” Regarding the King Jesus Christ, Isaiah 9:7 foretells: “To the abundance of the princely rule and to peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and …

"They lacked nothing."—Neh. 9:21. THE NEED FOR DISCIPLINE How did Jehovah mercifully care for his sinful people? (b) What do we learn from God’s dealings with his chosen nation? The Levites’ prayer refers to two specific sins committed by Israel soon after they had promised to keep God’s Law at Mount Sinai. For these, they rightly deserved to be left alone to die. But the prayer praises Jehovah: “In your abundant mercy [you] did not leave them in the wilderness. . . . For forty years you provided them with food . . . They lacked nothing. Their very garments did not wear out, and their feet themselves did not become swollen.” (Neh. 9:19, 21) Today, Jeh…

Do not bring us into temptation.—Matt. 6:13. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2017/4/17 Do we regularly petition God to help us maintain our integrity when we are faced with temptation? Our upbringing or our past conduct may have developed in us a liking for practices that Jehovah condemns. Even then, he can help us to bring about necessary changes so that we can continue to serve him acceptably. King David recognized this. After he had committed adultery with Bath-sheba, David implored Jehovah: “Create in me a pure heart, . . . and put within me a new spirit, a steadfast one.” (Ps. 51:10, 12) Sinful conduct may strongly appeal to our fallen flesh, but Jehova…

A few highlights: “Although Jesus does not explain why he calls riches “unrighteous,” the Bible makes clear that commercialism was not part of God’s purpose. Par 6 Along with the political and religious elements, the greedy commercial system, represented by “the merchants” of Revelation 18:3, constitutes part of Satan’s world. Unlike the complete separation that God’s people maintain from politics and false religion, most cannot separate themselves completely from the commercial part of Satan’s world. Par 2 Another way to gain friendship with Jehovah is by minimizing our involvement with the commercial world and using our circumstances to seek “true” ric…

No matter how far you go in the wrong direction, there's always a chance to turn your life around. "Let the wicked man leave his way, And the evil man his thoughts; Let him return to Jehovah, who will have mercy on him, To our God, for he will forgive in a large way." (Isa.55:11) Loyalty is a warm quality that includes devotion, faithfulness, and unswerving allegiance. A loyal person is not fickle. Rather, he lovingly attaches himself to someone (or something), sticking closely to that person (or thing) even through difficult circumstances. Yes, Jehovah is the supremely “loyal One.”— (Rev. 16:5) How can we imitate Jehovah’s loyalty? One way is by taking…

I put this under "controversial" because I was going to tell about a "Family Night" experience that was a bit troubling. But I'm going to tell about another one that was more funny at the time, and I didn't realize how serious it was until a few months later. Here's the background: Family Night is a kind of talent show along with some experiences that helped Bethelites get to know each other better. It was held in the local Brooklyn Heights Kingdom Hall attached to the back of the 107 Building, but it had less than 500 seats, and there were at least 3 times that many Bethelites who wanted to attend. It was very popular, and soon the "shows" were actually televised vi…

Give us today our bread for this day.—Matt. 6:11. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2017/4/16 In referring to our daily bread, Jesus likely meant our immediate needs. Thus, he went on to show how God clothes the wildflowers, and then he said: “Will he not much rather clothe you, you with little faith?” He concluded by repeating this important advice: “Never be anxious about the next day.” (Matt. 6:30-34) This shows that rather than be materialistic, we should be content with our basic daily needs. Such needs may include suitable accommodations, employment to provide for our family, and wisdom to cope with health concerns. If we were to pray only for such physi…

THEY PRAISE PEACE BUT GLORIFYING WAR. (WORLD WAR II) Some History for you to know about..... FRANKFURT on MAIN, Germany, September 24. The German PROTESTANT and Catholic churches now publish in their magazines extensive exhortations which explains the duties of the soldier who fights in defense of their country and warn the German soldier to fight with the same resolution of San Miguel for a German victory and a just peace. In Catholic newspapers front-page appears the figure of the Archangel brandishing a sword of war and shifting a dragon with a sacred spear. In the Catholic dioceses in the West and to the South of Germany, the clergy, headed by bishops a…
