Who Made the Laws That Govern Our Universe? “HAVE you grasped the celestial laws?” (Job 38:33, The New Jerusalem Bible) About a century after the writing of the Old Testament—the Hebrew portion of the Bible—was completed. At that time, the Greek philosopher Aristotle was teaching the leading scholars of his day about the physical heavens. Today, he is still ranked among the most influential scientists who ever lived. Aristotle carefully worked out a model for the cosmos. He proposed a system in which the earth was at the center of a universe made of over 50 crystalline spheres, one nestled inside the other. The stars were affixed to the outermost sphere, th…

What's the deal with Jehovah's Witness and blood transfusions? Michael Ouradnik response: The tenor of your question is decidedly negative and sarcastic, in my opinion, and normally I’d refrain from responding. But…. This is the kind of “in your face” question that will probably attract the attention of those interested is seeing the Witnesses assaulted for being ignorant and negligent (concerning their refusal to allow their children to be transfused). This, therefore, begs the questions: Do Jehovah’s Witnesses have sound reasons for their wholesale refusal to accept or allow blood transfusions? Are their reasons religious (Biblical) or medical…

She carried the UN charter in her handbag and was always prepared to demonstrate how an international problem could be peacefully resolved through the UN. An early member of the United Nations Association, she was chair of UNA international service, and for many years chaired the UNA annual conference. When two Jehovah’s Wi…

The 11-story building with a massive courtyard is located at 107 Columbia Heights BY TANAY WARERKAR FEB 15, 2017, 10:00AM EST Nearly a year after it came on the market, a Jehovah’s Witnesses-owned rental building in Brooklyn Heights has sold for $87.5 million, The Real Deal reports. Though a pretty pricey sale in itself, it’s significantly less than the $185 millionsome real estate websites had predicted it would sell for. Clipper Realty, the developer behind the failed condo conversion of the Sony building, is the buyer behind this Brooklyn Heights sale, and is the latest among big name developers to scoop up a Jehovah’s Witnesses property. The build…

The lawsuit was settled on Monday in the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas. A woman has settled a lawsuit against the Spring Grove Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and two of its supporting organizations, which alleged that elders failed to report instances of sexual abuse to law enforcement to protect their own reputation. In the lawsuit, the woman said she’s suffered physical and emotional injuries after being abused between ages 14 and 16 by Terry Monheim, whom she met through the church. The Jehovah’s Witnesses became aware of it and “did nothing” to protect her, according to court documents. The lawsuit was settled on Monday in the Philadelph…

MANKATO — The city-owned former CCTV building isn't particularly versatile or beauteous, has no parking and can't be used for rental housing. So when the Mankato City Council asked people to submit offers to purchase and propose a new use for the Vine Street structure, no private developers stepped forward. The non-profit Key City Bike organization, however, sees the former Jehovah's Witness worship hall as a potential gift from above. Key City's current space at 1429 N. Riverfront Drive has no furnace or air conditioner. In cold-weather months, the organization has to discontinue its mission of reclaiming old and unwanted bikes, providing them for free to …

In its first move as a publicly traded company, Clipper Realty is buying an 11-story Brooklyn Heights rental building from the Jehovah’s Witnesses for $87.5 million, the firm told The Real Deal. The David Bistricer-led real estate investment trust entered into an agreement to buy 107 Columbia Heights for $569 per square foot. The Witnesses put the 154,000-square-foot building on the market in April. At the time, sources speculated it could fetch up to $1,000 per foot. Clipper said it expects to close on the property by May 2017, and it plans to convert several public spaces in the building into 12 additional apartments. The REIT debuted on the New York Stock E…

Serve Jehovah Without Distraction Man, who appointed me judge or arbitrator between you two?—Luke 12:14. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2017/2/15 Many things happened during Jesus’ ministry that could have distracted him, but he never succumbed to them. Early in his ministry, after he had taught the crowds and performed miracles in Capernaum, people begged him not to leave their city. But how did Jesus react to this flattering request? He said: “I must also declare the good news of the Kingdom of God to other cities, because for this I was sent.” (Luke 4:42-44) True to his word, Jesus walked the length and breadth of Palestine, preaching and teaching. …

My ears have heard about you, but now I do see you with my eyes.—Job 42:5. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2017/2/14 What are some reasons why we may not clearly see God’s hand in our affairs? Life’s challenges can overwhelm us. When this happens, we may forget to keep focused on how Jehovah has already helped us. When Queen Jezebel threatened the prophet Elijah’s life, even Elijah momentarily forgot how God had acted in his behalf. Regarding Elijah, the Bible says: “He asked that he might die.” (1 Ki. 19:1-4) What was the solution to Elijah’s problem? He needed to look to Jehovah for encouragement. (1 Ki. 19:14-18) Job also got so distracted by his own conc…

How Can We Show That We Love Jehovah? We love, because [God] first loved us.—1 John 4:19. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2017/2/13 In what way has God “first loved us”? The apostle Paul said: “God recommends his own love to us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Rom. 5:8) Love is Jehovah’s dominant attribute, so we can understand why Jesus told one inquirer that the first commandment from God is: “You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind and with your whole strength.” (Mark 12:30) From Jesus’ words, we learn that love for God involves, first of all, our heart. Bei…

THE TIME LINE OF CREATION THE BEGINNING The material heavens and earth are created.—Genesis 1:1. DARKNESS The earth is formless, desolate, and dark.—Genesis 1:2. FIRST DAY Diffused light evidently penetrates the earth’s atmosphere. If there had been any observer on the surface of the earth, the sources of light would have been imperceptible to him. Yet, the difference between night and day became discernible.—Genesis 1:3-5. SECOND DAY The earth is covered with water and a dense mantle of vapor. These two elements…
