With the burial of a donkey he will be buried.—Jer. 22:19 http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2016/12/23. We can find Bible accounts of some who received a rich spiritual heritage but failed to appreciate it. That was true in the family of one prophet, Samuel, who served Jehovah from a young age and had a fine record with God. (1 Sam. 12:1-5) Samuel set an example that his sons, Joel and Abijah, would have done well to imitate. However, they did not appreciate this, and they turned out to be bad. The Bible record tells us that unlike their father, they “perverted justice.” (1 Sam. 8:1-5) It was similar with King Josiah’s sons. Josiah set a superb example in wors…

A Jehovah’s Witness preacher and elder has been jailed for having sexual activity with a girl of 14. Family man Daniel Arthington, 46, of Llanddaniel, Anglesey, pleaded guilty at Caernarfon Crown Court and was sent to prison for two years and eight months. “I’m satisfied there was an element of grooming involved in your successful attempt in snaring your young prey,” Judge Huw Rees told him. “Your fall from grace is substantial but you have nobody to blame but yourself.’ Anna Pope, prosecuting, said the defendant had responsibilities which included being an elder, preacher and other duties. She described how a local builder had noticed a van parke…

It’s been a complicated year for relations between the U.S. and Russia; yet another revival from the 1980s that we did not need. Still, there’s one thing children across the world can agree on: Santa Claus is dope, because who doesn’t like an obese, benevolent housebreaker who gives out free stuff? It is customary for children of all cultures to send a list of exorbitant demands for Santa — known in Russia as Father Frost — that details how good they’ve been, and why that good behavior must now be rewarded with Tonka trucks and Legos (and whatever Russian kids like). Like everything else in Russia, President Vladimir Putin has infiltrated the spirit of Christmas itse…

Church fire sparked by food dehydrator

Fire sprinklers likely saved a Battle Ground-area church from more extensive damage after a food dehydrator sparked a fire Sunday night in its attached garage. Around 9:20 p.m., crews from Clark County Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall north of Battle Ground, at 33209 N.E. Lewisville Highway, for a report of a structure fire. Deputy Clark County Fire Marshal Curtis Eavenson said a fault in a food dehydrating device sparked a small fire in a garage attached to the church. The dehydrator appeared to be homemade. The sprinkler system limited the damage to a roughly 3-square-foot area, causing about $4,000 to $5,000 in da…

Happy is the people whose God is Jehovah!—Ps. 144:15. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2016/12/22 As early as the 20th century B.C.E., Jehovah had a distinct people on earth. Abraham, called “the father of all those having faith,” was the head of a household numbering into the hundreds. (Rom. 4:11; Gen. 14:14) Rulers in Canaan considered him to be “a great chieftain” and treated him with respect. (Gen. 21:22; 23:6, ftn.) Jehovah made a covenant with Abraham and his descendants. (Gen. 17:1, 2, 19) God told Abraham: “This is my covenant between me and you, that you and your offspring after you will keep: Every male among you must get circumcised. . . . And it w…

One fine Christmas Day, my wife was out driving. Our three or four year old daughter was in her car seat. "Mom, let's stop at Wegmans so I can get a free cookie." It's a child-friendly policy Wegmans then had. (do they still?) Imagine - a free cookie just for showing up! "Honey, we can't, Wegmans is closed today." Wegmans closed? How is that possible? "Because today is Christmas." My wife kept driving along and thought of all the other things she meant to do that day. Presently from the back seat came a low ominous epithet: "I HATE Christmas!" the child grumbled.

Cherish Your Privilege of Working With Jehovah! I was beside him as a master worker.—Prov. 8:30. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2016/12/21 Following his Father’s example, Jesus also assigned important work to his disciples. Arousing in them eager expectation for what they could accomplish, he said: “Most truly I say to you, whoever exercises faith in me will also do the works that I do; and he will do works greater than these, because I am going my way to the Father.” (John 14:12) To stress the urgency of such works, Jesus explained: “We must do the works of the One who sent me while it is day; the night is coming when no man can work.” (John 9:4) Even…
