All things . . . that you want men to do to you, you also must do to them.—Matt. 7:12. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2016/9/12 How can we apply this “Golden Rule” given by Jesus? Basically, by taking two steps. First, we should ask ourselves, ‘If I were in the other person’s shoes, how would I want to be treated?’ Then, we need to follow through, accommodating the other person to the extent possible. (1 Cor. 10:24) We often apply the Golden Rule in our dealings with fellow believers. But Jesus did not indicate that we should extend this consideration only to those related to us in the faith. He actually mentioned the Golden Rule when he was discussing how …

The fear of Jehovah—that is wisdom.—Job 28:28. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2016/9/11 To help Moses to acquire such fear and act wisely, Jehovah drew a contrast between humans and Almighty God. He asked: “Who made a mouth for man, or who makes them speechless, deaf, clear-sighted, or blind? Is it not I, Jehovah?” (Ex. 4:11) What was the lesson? Moses did not need to be afraid. He was sent by Jehovah, who would give Moses whatever he needed to deliver God’s message to Pharaoh. Besides, Pharaoh was no match for Jehovah. After all, this was not the first time God’s servants had been in danger under Egyptian rule. Perhaps Moses meditated on how Jehovah had pr…

When YouTuber/Redditor Roman Vargas found out that a man named Waymon Chandler Ivery was making the door-to-door rounds as a Jehovah’s Witness in his neighborhood, he got his cellphone camera out and confronted the man. In 1992, Ivery was convicted of first-degree sexual assault on a child. According to Hermant Mehta of The Friendly Atheist, Vargas was told by a Jehova’s Witness friend a few years ago that Ivery was living in his neighborhood. In addition, a Facebook post warning the community about Ivery was also clear in Vargas’ memory, so he had little trouble identifying him. The prospect of a pedophile going door-to-door in his neighborhood was a bit m…

How do foraging ants find their way back to their nests ? Researchers in the United Kingdom discovered that in addition to leaving scent markers, some ants use geometry to build trails that make finding home easy. For example, pharaoh ants “lay trails radiating out from the nest that fork at an angle of 50 to 60 degrees,” says New Scientist. What is remarkable about this pattern ? When an ant is returning to the nest and reaches a fork in the trail, it instinctively takes the path that deviates least, which inevitably leads home. “The geometry of the forking paths,” says the article, “optimises the flow of ants through the network of trails, especially when …

At the La Vega Kingdom Hall, which is around 35 miles north west of Bogota, Columbia. With a population of just under 50 million, there are some 165,000 active JWs in the country - a ratio of around 1-in-300. They conduct around 220,000 studies each month, and with just under 24,000 regular pioneers, the country saw a 2% increase last year. Last year's Memorial attendance was over half-a-million, which means 1-in-100, or 1%, of the country attended. Radical hate preacher Anjem Choudary has renounced his Muslim faith after being forced to share a cell with a particularly persistent Jehovah’s Witness. Choudary’s cellmate, Dave Smith, is a devout Witness and has spent the entire week teaching Choudary about the ways of his one true faith. As one prison officer explained, “The Witnesses in here prey on the weak and feeble minded, but there’s very little we can do about it. “They get you in a locked room and make you think about all the things wrong with the world, and before you know it you’re reading The Watchtower finding answers on every page. “In the outside world you can close the door on them wh…

The door was shut.—Matt. 25:10. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2016/9/10 Before the great tribulation starts, all the faithful anointed on earth will have received their final sealing. (Rev. 7:1-4) From then on, their calling is sure. But think about the years before the tribulation begins. What would happen to anointed ones who failed to remain watchful, who lost their integrity? They would lose their heavenly reward. Obviously, they would receive no final sealing prior to the start of the tribulation. By that time, other faithful ones would be anointed. When the tribulation starts, the foolish ones might be shocked to see the destruction of Babylon the Gr…

Speak consolingly to those who are depressed.—1 Thess. 5:14. http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/dt/r1/lp-e/2016/9/9 We can lift the spirits of depressed ones by expressing our genuine care and concern for them. We can offer sincere commendation to help them see their positive qualities and abilities. We can remind them that Jehovah drew them to his Son, so they must be precious in his eyes. (John 6:44) We can reassure them that Jehovah deeply cares for his servants who are “brokenhearted” or “crushed in spirit.” (Ps. 34:18) Our tender words can have a healing effect on those who need comfort. (Prov. 16:24) Elders have the responsibility to nourish, encourage, and refresh …

Betty passed away at age 91 in her sleep after a recent illness. She was raised here in Atascadero where she finished high school. She was known in the comity as a hard worker and had been in food service most of her adult life. She was with the senior nutritional program for years. She began as a cook in the Atascadero senior center and in later years went on to become the site manager for the Santa Margarita senior center for several years; her last year being in 2001. She took great pride in her work and was known for making everything special. She was active and faithful as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and lived her faith. She was kind and loving to all who knew…

In the course of several discussions here, I've received a certain amount of resistance and even criticism for referencing the older publications of the WTS, and even for referencing current publications (2014) that reference older publications (1914). What I need to know is how far back, then, is it appropriate to go when quoting from WTS publications? For instance, is 1981 too far back? Consider this quote from the WT of 2/15/1981 in the article on pg. 19 "Do We Need Help To Understand The Bible?" and please note the part I've bolded: Our View of the "Slave" If we have once established what instrument God is using as his “slave” to dispense spiritua…

Kyrgyzstan’s Christians battle falling numbers and restrictions
by Guest Nicole- 0 replies

The country is home to 1,000 Catholics, spread among three scattered parishes St Michael the Archangel church, Bishkek, which was built in 1969 by ethnic Germans. According to Fr Janez Michelcic, a Slovenian Catholic priest who gives the weekly English-language sermon, 60-70 people attend Mass on Sundays – yet none of the congregation speaks English. Down a dusty lane in the outskirts of northern Bishkek sits an unremarkable two-storey building. Atop is placed a slight, solitary cross. In an overwhelmingly Muslim neighbourhood where the sounds of farm animals fill the air, Kyrgyzstan’s only Catholic church – a remodelled house – finds itself in unlikely sur…
