Hurricane Florence could be the "storm of a lifetime" when it barrels into the Carolinas this week.

What you need to know: Florence is a slow-moving hurricane, bringing with it "life-threatening" storm surge and flash flooding, the National Hurricane Center said yesterday.

    What they're saying:

    • "This is not going to be a glancing blow...this is going to be a Mike Tyson punch to the Carolina coast."—FEMA's Jeff Byard.
    • "My message is clear: disaster is at the doorstep."—North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
    • "They haven't seen anything like what's coming at us in 25, 30 years, maybe ever. It's tremendously big and tremendously wet."—President Trump.

What it'll cost: Potentially $30 billion, per AccuWeather's Joel Myers.

A few ways it'll impact business: The Port of Charleston will be closed through at least Saturday, and Smithfield Foods will shut its North Carolina hog slaughter plant (the world's largest) through the end of the week. Airlines have canceled hundreds of flights. As for insurers? Covered losses could come in between $15 billion to $20 billion.

  2. ‘60 MinutesÂ’ Producer Heads for the Exit

Jeff Fager, executive producer of 60 Minutes, is leaving CBS amid accusations of inappropriate touching.

But that's not the whole story: Fager was named in the recent New Yorker exposé accusing (now former) CBS chief exec Les Moonves of sexual misconduct. Six former CBS employees claimed Fager touched them in a way that made them uncomfortable, and one alleged he groped her at a work party, accusations emblematic of a broader company culture problem at CBS...

But, Fager denied that claim. According to him, CBS terminated his contract because of a "harsh" text he sent a CBS reporter covering the Moonves story.

    • CBS News said Fager "violated company policy and it is [their] commitment to uphold those policies at every level," but didn't elaborate.

Zoom out: Still unconvinced of the #MeToo movement's influence? Just take a look at CBS.

  3. The FDA Drops the Hammer on E-Cigs

"Oh that? That's just a thumb drive, mom."

Some of those e-cigarettes that have taken off in America's high schools could soon be banned for everyone...precisely because they've taken off in America's high schools.

"The number of teenagers we believe are now using these products...has reached an epidemic proportion," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said yesterday.

    • Per the CDC, of the 3.6 million middle- and high-schoolers who identify as tobacco users, 2.1 million (or ~58%) used e-cigs.

So here's what Gottlieb's doing: The FDA told major e-cig manufacturers (Juul, Logic, MarkTen, blu, and Vuse) they have 60 days to come up with strategies to address use among teenagers.

And if they don't...regulators could force e-cig companies to drop all flavored tobacco products that appeal to kids (say goodbye to crème brûlée or fruit medley e-cigs).

Juul, which has captured ~72% of the $2.3 billion e-cig market, says it advertises to adults looking to quit smoking. But Gottlieb's take? "I am willing to narrow the off-ramp for adults to close the on-ramp for kids."

  4. This companies stock has been appreciating in the last couple of months because of the FCC's approval of it's C Band wavelength spectrum to be used in the upcoming 5G wireless rollout.

Can anyone explain to me briefly why C Band is so special? Just curious as to exactly how a satellite company could offer anything of value to terrestrial cell tower companies.

  5. Hi folks,

You may have noticed quite a number of changes to the entire site over the last few days.

Hopefully you will all enjoy your new home(s) depending on language.

This should end up better for everyone so that the site can enjoy many different groups rather than be dominated by ONE large one.

This new simplified view should work better....  I would also add that not one post was lost during the transition.

and if you can't find something... the search bar above should be very powerful.

Thanks to the @The Librarian for his understanding.

    Take care everyone!

  6. I am still going to say Invision Power Boards 4.x suite but it is lacking a progressive web app.

This site runs on IPB for instance.

I am wondering if anyone knows of a better platform that is monetizable using adsense?

I am surprised Google hasn't created a full suite for forum admins to complement it's adsense product together with a built in pwa.

    Your Thoughts?

  7. I was begging for IPB to create a progressive web app for this forum site and a developer pushed back saying I was in essence whining.

There are a few difficult steps for the average forum owner at this point. Developers can easily create something evidently.

As I was writing my response... I thought to myself.....

How much longer until Google, offers us a fully featured forum software with a PWA built in?   Adsense enabled. Hmm... good idea. Talk about a Blogger upgrade.

Anyone know Larry or Sergei personally over a Google? Please share this post with him/them.

All they have to do is empower all the old bloggers with pwa's of their own using their already in existence Google Adsense code.

Imagine creating a entire universe of Mark Zuckerberg's each with their own version of Google + / Facebook / Forum.

  8. The Danish company Orsted A/S opened the world’s largest offshore wind farm yesterday.

What do you need to know about it? It’s called the Walney Extension, it’s off the northwest coast of England, and it’s massive.

    Imagine 47 of these…

…plus 40 more Siemens turbines (505 ft. high) generating electricity across an area equivalent to 20,000 soccer fields, or double the size of Manhattan.

    More specs:

    • The Walney Extension is 50% owned by Orsted, with the other 50% split between two Danish pension funds.
    • The project is able to power 590,000 homes in the U.K., which is a leader in the offshore wind sector. The country operates over 1,800 offshore wind turbines.
  9. I was trying to decide how I would have reacted.

I believe in his right to free speech as long as he is not legally libelous or inciting malicious harm to individuals (Basically breaking the law)

He is a "crazy conspiracy theorist" in my mind and didn't appear "harmful".

What would you decide if you were the admin and Alex Jones joined your website?

Twitter booted him... YouTube booted him.... he is still on Facebook.... Hmmmm.

  10. In Proof-of-work (PoW) transactions are grouped into blocks. These blocks are validated by PoW miners. When a block is validated it becomes a permanent part of the Decred network.

You can become a miner by dedicating spare computing resources to the network. In return miners are rewarded with Decred.

For efficiency and convenience you can join mining pools. The pools are groups of miners who share the work and split the reward. Joining a mining pool is an excellent way for smaller contributors to receive consistent payouts for their work.
