The attorney of an alleged victim claims an elder at a local Kingdom Hall molested him when he was eight years old. The attorney is penalizing Jehovah’s Witnesses because they are refusing to hand over documents that might show a pattern of abuse. NBC 7’s Dave Summers has more. (Published Friday, Nov. 10, 2017)

A state appeals court has upheld $2 million in legal sanctions against the Jehovah’s Witnesses after the religious organization refused to produce internal files and documents in a lawsuit that alleges sexual misconduct by a former elder in the organization.

Osbaldo Padron sued the local Playa Pacifica Congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, also known as the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Padron claimed he was molested on multiple occasions as a child by Gonzalo Campos, who was also associated with the Pacifica Congregation.

Padron’s attorney, Irwin Zalkin, obtained internal church documents through the legal discovery process. Zalkin agreed to a confidentiality and nondisclosure agreement, which was signed by both parties to the litigation.

But in 2015, a dispute arose over Watchtower’s refusal to produce additional documents requested by Zalkin.

The organization argued, in part, that the order, issued by Superior Court Judge Richard Strauss, violates its First Amendment rights as a religious organization.

Judge Strauss disagreed, and last year imposed monetary sanctions of $4,000 a day for every day Watchtower failed to search for and produce the documents.

Watchtower appealed Strauss’s order, and on Nov. 9, a three-member panel of the state Court of Appeals upheld Strauss’s ruling.

In a unanimous decision written by Acting Presiding Justice Richard Huffman, the justices said Watchtower has abused the legal process and must pay the court-ordered sanctions.

Plaintiff’s attorney Zalkin says the sanctions started on April 16, 2016, and at $4000 a day, now total more than $2 million dollars.

In the conclusion to their 39-page ruling, the justices said: "... the superior court has shown great patience and flexibility in dealing with a recalcitrant litigant who refuses to follow valid orders and merely reiterates losing arguments."

The alleged molester, Gonzalo Campos, could not be found for comment.

Watchtower’s public information office responded with a brief comment when asked about the appellate court ruling:

"We are evaluating our legal options at this time," the organization said.

In papers filed in the Padron lawsuit, Watchtower denies Padron’s allegations of abuse and argues that even if an elder did molest a child, the parent organization has no control over that abuse, and is not responsible for harm done to that child.

    By Rory Tingle For Mailonline

A woman who was worried her Jehovah's Witness husband was cheating set him up and then watched in horror as he was seduced after knocking on someone's door.

The honeytrap was laid for the suspicious wife with the help of YouTubers To Catch a Cheater.

They arranged for an actress to wait at one of the houses on the husband's outreach round and try to seduce him.

Footage shows the actress flirting with the husband before showing off her cleavage.

The man then gets undressed down to his underwear and the situation heats up as his disgusted wife watches on.

Much of the footage has been censored so it is difficult to work out exactly what is happening.

  3. UK: 2017 Checklist for Audit of File

Context on how this is used:

    2016

    2015

December 9, 2008 TO ALL BODIES OF ELDERS Re: Data protection procedures

Annual audit of files: Each year we will provide a checklist-style worksheet to help service committees accomplish the audit of files. This audit should be completed before December 31 of each year. The circuit overseer will ask to see this checklist to make sure the audit has been carried out effectively. Your close attention to this will help ensure that your files are in good condition.

December 5, 2008 TO ALL BODIES OF ELDERS Re: Index to Letters and congregation’s file

Material involving child abuse should be handled in line with our December 9, 2008, letter and the annual Checklist for Audit of Files. Notification of Disfellowshipping or Disassociation forms on individuals who have not been reinstated should also be kept indefinitely.

  4. He said that the Watchtower legal department told them they would have to leave straight away if the outcome was negative.

He said that they did not have return tickets. If true, it is highly likely that they were breaking the law. Many countries will not approve a temp visa if there is no return ticket booked. Looking at Russia's requirements, this is the case and the visa must be obtained before entry into Russia and details of the return travel need to be included on the application form.

Mark Sanderson tells us that when the appeal at the Supreme Court was negative that they had to leave Russia immediately... but they had no tickets. He tells the committee members to just drive to the airport and on the way he's in contact with the travel desk at Watchtower. Well, whattayaknow... the travel desk managed to get 18 tickets for all of them to leave on the same plane. Praise Jehovah!.

  6. There was a man who said, "I never knew what happiness was until I got married...and then it was too late!"

Love is one long sweet dream, and marriage is the alarm clock.

They say when a man holds a woman's hand before marriage, it is love; after marriage, it is self-defense.

When a newly married man looks happy, we know why. But when a ten-year married man looks happy, we wonder why.

There was this lover who said that he would go through hell for her. They got married, and now he is going through hell.

A coward is a hero with a wife, kids, and a mortgage. -- Marvin Kitman

A gentleman is one who never swears at his wife while ladies are present.

A husband is living proof that a wife can take a joke.

A husband is what's left of the lover after the nerve has been extracted. -Marriage quotes2// Marriage is like a mousetrap. Those on the outside are trying to get in. Those on the inside are trying to get out.

Marriage is low down, but you spend the rest of your life paying for it.

Marriage is the process of finding out what kind of man your wife would have preferred.

Marriage is the sole cause of divorce.

Marriage means commitment. Of course, so does insanity.

Marriage still confers one very special privilege - only a married person can get divorced.

  8. At Warwick there is a gazebo overlooking the lake. It's a nice peaceful setting. Well someone had the bright idea they were going to propose while they were at Warwick. They see this Gazebo and walk out to. He proposes to her and they take some nice pictures there of each other to remember their engagement.

Well, a few minutes later Bethels version of the secret service comes running down the hill. A bunch of these guys tell them that they can't be there, this is for the GB use only. They meet there on Wednesdays when it's nice out instead of meeting in their office.

It gets even crazier! They made them delete all the photos they took at this location. They gave some weird reason that they don't want tourist coming down and taking pictures of the gazebo and idolizing it because the GB have their meetings there on Wednesday on nice days. & that they didn't want other people getting the idea that this would be a good place to get engaged at.

I can confirm this story 100% down to the smallest detail. One of the weirdest things I've ever witnessed. Talk about an awkward engagement.

  9. That's an interesting, but subtle and very specific change to the previous directions the WT have sent to congregations regarding the labelling of the contribution boxes...

You do remember the March 2017 letter??

NOW - add temporary labels over 'Local Congregation Expenses' boxes

BoE Letter, October 2, 2017 - Re: Contributions Received at the 2017 Annual Meeting

Please place temporary labels on the contribution boxes so that all boxes are clearly labeled “Worldwide Work.”

PREVIOUSLY - no label changes, just send money in 'Local Congregation Expenses' to Bethel (minus any minor expenses incurred during the actual event)

BoE Letter, March 2, 2017 - Re: Broadcast Events Held in Kingdom Halls

    8. Donations placed in the box labeled “Worldwide Work” should be forwarded to the branch office using jworg. Donations placed in the box labeled “Local Congregation Expenses” can be used to cover local expenses incurred during the event. Thereafter, any surplus should be forwarded to the branch office as a donation to the worldwide work.

  10. Watchtower 12/1/1987 pages 30-31 ‘Where do such funds come from?’ is an often-asked question. Unlike the churches of Christendom, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not take up collections or send out envelopes to solicit donations. Rather, contribution boxes-like the treasury chests of Biblical times-are set up at their Kingdom Halls.

Awake 9/8/1975 page 26 …is it not a comfort for them to know that in the local congregation of Jehovah’s witnesses they will never be tithed to pay out a percentage of their income? Nor will unscriptural money-raising schemes be imposed on them. It is at the Kingdom Hall that an unobtrusive contribution box is located for use by those who wish voluntarily to give money to support the work of the congregation. Donations mailed to the headquarters of the Watch Tower Society are also unsolicited and entirely voluntary.

Watchtower 9/15/1974 page 559 The Kingdom Halls of this happy group are open to you and you may attend free of charge, without having to suffer embarrassment by a request for contributions or the passing of a collection plate.

Watchtower 8/15/1971 page 506 The emphasis in all giving among the Witnesses is that it must be voluntary and spontaneous, from the heart. In fact, ever since the earliest days of the modern witnesses of Jehovah it has been their policy that never should there be any passing of collection plates or similar solicitations for money.

Watchtower 5/1/1962 page 278 How May I Contribute? Jehovah’s witnesses have never gone begging for finances.

  11. The family and community of a Massachusetts woman killed in Sunday's shooting rampage in Las Vegas is mourning her death.

Rhonda LeRocque, 42, of Tewksbury, was among the dozens killed in the gunfire that broke out at the Route 91 Harvest Festival at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas strip.

LeRocque had traveled to Las Vegas with her husband Jason and their 6-year-old daughter to attend the country music festival. Her husband was not injured, and the child had left the concert with her grandfather shortly before the shooting.

"Jason was right next to her when she fell, he thought she was ducking, he thought she was ducking, but she didn't get up," LeRocque's mother, Priscilla Champagne, told NBC Boston.
