  1. Weeks after faith leader Ray Comfort announced that he would essentially crash atheists’ upcoming Reason Rally — a secular revival of sorts that will be held in Washington D.C. on June 4 — to preach and hand out $25,000 in Subway gift cards as well as copies of his new book about atheism, there’s been a major change in plans.

“Our plan was to give away 5,000 copies of my new book on atheism, and $25,000 worth of Subway gift cards — as a small token of Christin love,” Comfort told TheBlaze in an email interview. “Our problem was that a thousand Christians registered to help us.”

He continued, “The police said that the only way we could gather a thousand Christians in the Nation Mall was on the condition that we didn’t approach atheists, saying that we would be arrested if we did.”

So, Comfort, head of Living Waters and Way of the Master ministries, essentially found a way around the permit process.

He cancelled the invitation to the 1,000 Christians who volunteered to come and help. Then, he and his small film crew decided to hold a smaller event during the Reason Rally — and, considering their size, they no longer needed a permit to gather; in essence, they were no longer seen by police as organizing an official “protest” comprised of more than 1,000 people.

“We then told the thousand Christians that if they came of their own initiative, they too didn’t fall under the need of a permit,” he explained. “They were not only free to share their faith, but they could join us for the filming of open air preaching at the Washington Monument at 1:00 p.m. on June 4th.”

Comfort said that he understands why police made the decision, calling it “a legitimate concern because of the very real threat of terrorism.”

“They don’t want to have officers policing clashes between a thousand Christians and an estimated 10,000 atheists,” he told TheBlaze. “Not that we believe that will happen.”

In the end, Comfort said that he’s still hoping that atheists “come and heckle” so that he and the crowd can interact with nonbelievers — a central goal of the initial plan to attend the atheist event.

As for the $25,000 in Subway gift cards, Comfort decided to donate them to the homeless in Los Angeles, California. He still plans to give away copies of his new book, “Fat Chance: Why Pigs Will Fly Before America Has an Atheist President,” while standing near two giant caricatures of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton — but it’s his message to nonbelievers that he’s hoping truly resonates.

“I will be telling them that 54 million people die every year, and that if there was one chance in a million that the Bible is right when it says ‘Jesus Christ has abolished death,’ they owe it to their good sense to soften their hearts and at least listen,” he said. “That’s all I ask.”

As TheBlaze previously reported, Reason Rally organizers said in a recent press release that members of Congress will potentially be “inundated” in the days preceding the massive atheist rally on June 4 by a large group of “voters who don’t want religion to guide public policy.”

Atheists, agnostics and “nones” visiting Washington D.C. to participate in the Reason Rally are being encouraged to push politicians to fund only “evidence-based sex education.”

Those who wish to attend the “Advocacy Days” portion of the Reason Rally will be trained on effective lobbying techniques and will be given information on sex ed that is pertinent to the funding debate, with the goal of sending at least one atheist, agnostic or “none” out to visit the office of each member of Congress.

Earlier this year, Freedom From Religion Foundation co-presidents Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker sent a letter to President Barack Obama, asking him to court and give credence to atheist voters by attending the Reason Rally.

“We respectfully invite you, in your final year in office, to do something no American president has ever done: reach out to secular America,” they wrote. “Such attention from the Office of the President would demonstrate that freethinkers, atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and rationalists are accepted citizens.”

Gaylor and Barker then asked Obama to “make a historic appearance” at the Reason Rally, as the event offers Obama “an ideal opportunity for the office of the president” to welcome and address those in attendance, claiming that atheists and agnostics fall victim to “unwarranted stereotypes, putdowns and assumptions that we cannot be good people or good citizens.”

Among the Reason Rally attendees will be Hollywood heavyweight Johnny Depp, who will join other well-known figures in addressing the crowd, according to a press release from the rally’s organizers.

“What do Bill Nye, Andrés Roemer, Johnny Depp, Maryam Namazie, and Killah Priest have in common?” a press release reads. “Two things: They all want reason — not religion — to guide public policy and they will all be speaking at Reason Rally 2016.”

The most recent sex-ed announcement from the Reason Rally organizers comes after Obama removed a grant and, thus, cut funding for abstinence-only programs in his proposed 2017 federal budget.

  6. President Barack Obama is ready to go on the campaign trail for his party’s nominee, a White House source told CNN.

The president has chosen to remain on the sidelines during the Democratic primaries, but the source said he is anxious to “get people fired up” about the election — and defeating presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump — once his party has a nominee.

    (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

    Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

The source said the president will “explode onto the scene” once there is a Democratic nominee because he “knows his power” to fire up the party’s base.

“It’s driving him crazy” to wait, the source added.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Tuesday that the president will deliver a speech Wednesday during his visit to Elkhart, Indiana, regarding the state of the economy. The remarks, Earnest added, will be “mindful of the political backdrop.”

Earnest said the president “understands that his successor will have some important decisions to make about whether or not we are going build on this progress, are we going to build on this momentum, or are we going to tear it down?”

“And there is a pretty clear choice to be made if you take a look at the policies that are being advocated by the two parties,” Earnest added.

Neither of the remaining Democratic presidential candidates have yet secured the requisite 2,383 delegates necessary to receive the party’s nomination.

  10. When seniors who are National Honor Society members attend graduation at Plano (Texas) Senior High School this month, they aren’t allowed to wear collars (i.e., stoles) bearing the NHS emblem, WFAA-TV reported.

KellyAnn Frederick, mother of one NHS member who’s graduating from the school, wrote the principal to find out why — and the response was that graduates aren’t to wear any club or organizational regalia, the station said.

But Frederick added to WFAA that an NHS sponsor claimed administrators want all students to feel included at graduation ceremonies rather than some being singled out.

“They deserve it,” she told the station regarding the NHS members. “They worked so hard for it. If you choose not to work that hard, then that’s okay. I wasn’t an NHS kid. I didn’t wear the NHS stole when I graduated. But friends of mine did, and I was OK.”

    More from WFAA:

The school district confirmed the practice on Tuesday, and that it differs from nearby Plano West and Plano East High Schools, where students do wear NHS stoles.

At Plano Senior High, students with a GPA of 3.6 or higher can wear a plain honor stole, but not the National Honor Society stole that signifies both grades and community service.

Garrett Frederick told WFAA that he’s been a National Honor Society member since his sophomore year.

“I’m not just an honor student — I’m an NHS student. I worked hard. I put in the hours,” he told the station, noting that he logged 20 hours of community service every semester.

“I was really looking forward to wearing it and being able to say I was a part of it, because I have friends that go to [Plano East High School] and [Plano West High School], and they’re all wearing it,” Garrett Frederick added to WFAA. “So it’s like, I don’t know why we’re not allowed to wear it. I don’t get it.”

He said he and his friends in the NHS might start a petition or talk to the principal.

  15. Islamic State leaders have ordered that all satellite dishes in the terror group’s strongholds of Mosul, Iraq, and Raqqa, Syria, be destroyed ahead of Ramadan.

But the announcement was more of a security precaution than a religious command made in light of the 30-day fasting holiday. IS leaders stated the threat of airstrikes as the reason for destroying the satellite dishes, the Telegraph reported.

Iraqi youth shatters receiver in Mosul street after Islamic State officials ordered the destruction of devices that could be used to pinpoint targets of airstrikes. (Image via Twitter/Riam Dilati)

In a video released Tuesday by Welayat Nineveh, the group’s Mosul-based media office, two Islamic State leaders, who identify themselves as Abu Saad al-Ansari and Abu Abdullah al-Ansari, discuss the dangers of Western media, noting the risk of Western intelligence agencies using local TV satellite dishes to pinpoint targets.

A portion of the video was posted to Twitter by BBC foreign news producer Riam Dalati:

The video shows IS officials passing out pamphlets explaining the need to destroy or hand over dishes to the group’s local police force.

It concludes with footage of dishes, receivers, television sets and VCRs being destroyed.

A similar message was released in Raqqa, according to the activist group Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently. The statement commands Raqqa and Mosul residents to destroy all dishes before the first day of Ramadan, the 30-day yearly period of fasting, prayer and almsgiving, which begins June 5.

In February, U.S. Army spokesman Col. Steve Warren said the drone campaign to kill leaders and high-profile figures such as Mohammed Emwazi, the British Islamic State executioner known as “Jihadi John,” had sparked widespread fear and paranoia among the movement’s leaders, the Telegraph reported.

“These strikes sow fear and paranoia inside the organization, which is why they are so helpful,” Warren said.

The order to destroy the satellite dishes comes after Iraq’s army entered Islamic State-occupied Fallujah Monday in a major offensive as part of its “final push” to recapture the city, which has become one of the Islamic State’s most important strongholds.
