  1. A woman visiting the U.S. gave birth to a baby with microcephaly in Hackensack, New Jersey, after contracting the Zika virus elsewhere, according to ABC News.

The 31-year-old mother from Honduras is receiving “exceptional” care, hospital officials told ABC News.

Dr. Abdulla Al-Kahn, Hackensack University Medical Center’s director of maternal-fetal medicine and surgery, told WABC-TV that the prognosis for babies born with microcephaly — an abnormally small head and brain — is “generally very poor.”

“It was very sad for us to see a baby born with such a condition,” he said, adding that the baby’s mother is “hanging in there.”

“But of course what human being isn’t going to be devastated by this news?” he said.

  4. Popular evangelist Christine Caine travels more than 300,000 miles each year, cross-crossing the globe as she addresses diverse Christian audiences and runs A21, her international nonprofit aimed at combating human trafficking.

It’s an dynamic that gives Caine, author of the new book “Unashamed,” a unique perspective on the state of the Christian church. So, when she was recently asked how she responds to those who claim that faith is dying and on the decline, the evangelist erupted with laughter.

“They need to get out more. That’s my reaction … you are in such a small little circle,” she told The Church Boys podcast of such critics. “The church has never been more vibrant on the Earth, the church has never been more alive on the Earth, the church has never been more widespread on the Earth, we’ve never been reaching more people as we are today, there have never been the numbers coming to faith as there are today.”

And Caine wasn’t done there, saying that this is “the greatest time on Earth, in history to be part of the church of Jesus Christ.”

Listen to Caine discuss the state of the Christian church at the 25:00-mark below:

While polls have recently shown that there is a decline in the proportion of those who call themselves “Christian” — a nominal measure — Caine said that she believes that, rather than a sweeping decline in faith, something more defined is happening.

“I’ll tell you what’s declining and dying — nominal religion, dead empty religious works, that’s dying,” she said. “But who cares?”

As for genuine Christianity, Caine said that the collective church is “glorious” and flourishing across the world. While she said that Christianity is in good shape overall, Caine also issued a warning when it comes to the current state of culture in North America.

“We’re not in Kansas anymore. I think Christianity — particularly here as we’ve known it in America … we have to be living a dynamic, vibrant everyday faith, not a sunday faith, not a fake faith, not a religious faith that’s based on rules and relations,” she said. “And we have to learn what it truly means to love our neighbor as ourselves.”

Caine called on Christians to engage the world and not run from it, while helping to usher in biblical transformation, saying that such a balance can be achieved when each believer has a genuine and “interconnected faith life.”

“We cannot be saying one thing out there and living another thing internally,” she said.

Caine also spoke about some very personal issues that she’s faced in her own life, including an internal battle against shame — an issue with which she believes many other Christians have also struggled.

“I was left in a hospital unnamed and unwanted when I was born,” Caine said, adding that she was later a victim of sexual abuse. ”I fundamentally always felt this sense of unworthiness.”

    Evangelist Christine Caine (Facebook/Christine Caine)

    Evangelist Christine Caine (Facebook/Christine Caine)

It’s a feeling that she believes is running rampant in today’s culture, as so many feel that they are not rich, smart or talented enough.

“You never kind of feel enough of anything,” Caine said, adding that she hopes to “help people understand we are fundamentally worthy, because we were created in the image of God.”

Part of Caine’s own journey, which she extensively discusses in “Unashamed: Drop the Baggage, Pick up Your Freedom, Fulfill Your Destiny,” dealt looking past her pain and learning to truly trust the Lord.

“The Bible says that God is light and in him there is no darkness,” she said. “Now, it took me a long time to move that truth from an intellectual belief to a heart belief that God has no dark side. For years, I was like, ‘If you were good, why did you let those bad things happen to me?’”

Eventually, Caine said that she came to understand that “we live in a fallen world and bad things happen to good people” — a lesson that she’s hoping to help others learn as well.

  6. Surveillance video reportedly shows the moment a man used a tire iron to beat his wife’s alleged would-be rapist in a Bronx apartment complex.

The clip reportedly shows a shirtless Earl Nash, 43, in a hallway at the Claremont Village apartment about 9:30 p.m. Monday when 61-year-old Mamadou Diallo appears to exit an elevator, spot Nash and hit him with a tire iron.

Earlier Nash allegedly barged into Diallo’s unit while his wife Nenegale was inside, ripped off her clothes and beat her. She said her assailant told her he was going to rape her, DNAInfo reported. She broke away and called her husband on the phone, WNYW-TV reported, at which point Nash took off.

Nash died at a hospital after police found him unresponsive with head and body trauma. Diallo was charged Tuesday with manslaughter, but the charges were later reduced to assault. A crowd cheered as Diallo walked out of court with his lawyer, WNYW reported.

Neighbors said Nash had been acting aggressively toward other women in the complex, WNYW added.

News 12 obtained the clip and reported that police said it was recorded just after Nash broke into the couple’s apartment.

  9. North Korean state-run media praised presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as a “wise politician” and the right choice for Americans in November, according to Reuters.

A Tuesday editorial in DPRK Today — a mouthpiece of the Kim Jong Un regime — hailed Trump as a “far-sighted presidential candidate” while calling Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton “thick-headed” and “dull.”

    (MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images)

    Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images

“Trump is not the rough-talking, screwy, ignorant candidate they say he is, but is actually a wise politician and a prescient presidential candidate,” the piece’s author, Han Yong Muk, wrote.

The editorial argued that Trump could bring about the Hermit Kingdom’s “Yankee Go Home” vision and that “there are many positive aspects” to his candidacy for the communist country. North Korean resents the presence of Americans on the Korean peninsula, and the editorial argued that Trump may withdraw the American troops protecting South Korea.

The regime often uses belligerent rhetoric regarding South Korea, prompting concerns about conflict between the countries if American troops vacate the peninsula. “Trump said ‘he will not get involved in the war between the South and the North,’ isn’t this fortunate from North Koreans’ perspective?” the editorial states.

The piece claimed that, with Trump as president, Americans will not be “living every minute and second on pins and needles in fear of a nuclear strike” by North Korea.

Last month, Trump said he would be willing to speak to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as president. “I would speak to him, I would have no problem speaking to him,” Trump told Reuters.

  15. Egypt’s president has promised to prosecute an armed Muslim mob that burned down the homes of Christians in the Minya province May 20. The attack came after that same group accused a Christian man of having an affair with a Muslim woman earlier last month, the Associated Press reported at the time.

Though the accused man was believed to have fled the country with his wife and children May 19, remaining Christian family members have faced extreme persecution in his absence. In addition to the fire, the mob also stripped the man’s 70-year-old Christian mother naked after dragging her out of her home.

The hashtag “#EgyptStrippedNaked” took off on social media last week shortly after it was introduced.

Although hundreds of Muslims participated in the May 20 attack, only six people were arrested, the AP reported.

According to Ahram Online, Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said Monday during a speech in Cairo that those responsible for what happened to the 70-year-old Christian woman and the homes burned to the ground in Minya will be held responsible.

“When I address my speech to this woman, I don’t say this [Christian] Egyptian because we are all one,” el-Sisi was quoted as saying. “I call on this woman not to be angered by what happened.”

Christians, who comprise about 10 percent of Egypt’s population of more than 90 million people, have long complained of religious persecution in the mostly Muslim nation.

El-Sissi, in office since 2014, has sought to address some of their grievances, changing election laws to allow more Christians into the national legislature and easing restrictions on building new churches and renovating old ones. But many Christians say they are still treated unfairly and are often the victims when in disputes with Muslims.

Discrimination is more pronounced in Egypt’s rural provinces like Minya, where Christians are a sizable minority that make up about 35 percent of the population. Minya, like Assiut province farther south, is a traditional stronghold of militant Muslims.

Anba Makarios, Minya’s top Christian cleric, told a talk show host on the private Dream TV network last week that, after the mob stripped the 70-year-old mother and grandmother naked, they forced her to walk through the streets naked as they chanted “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is great.”

The woman waited five days to report the incident to the police, Makarios said, adding that she had initially found it too difficult to “swallow the humiliation” she suffered and notify authorities.

Makarios predicted the attack on the Minya village will most likely be handled through a government-sponsored meeting of the two sides in which the Christians will be forced to accept “humiliating” conditions for reconciliation.

Egypt is ranked 22nd on the Open Doors USA’s 2016 World Watch List. On the organization’s website, the country’s persecution level is listed as “severe,” and the source of persecution is listed as “Islamic extremism.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  17. Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton will face a tight race in November, according to CNN’s “Poll Of Polls,” an average of the five most recent nationwide polls.

The “Poll of Polls” found that Clinton and Trump are within two points of each other nationally. Clinton has a slight lead with 45 percent to Trump’s 43 percent.

CNN notes that the “tightened margins” come from “a more unified Republican Party.”

The survey also found that “about 1-in-8 registered voters” aren’t currently backing either candidate.
