  2. Rapper Snoop Dogg blasted a new remake of the 1977 “Roots” miniseries and urged his social media following to boycott the series in an expletive-laced video posted to Instagram. “I’m sick of this s**t. How the f*** are they going to put ‘Roots’ on on Memorial Day?” he said. “They going to just keep beating that s**t into our heads about how they did us, huh?” Recording artist Snoop Dogg speaks onstage during TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2015 at Pier 70 in San Francisco. (Steve Jennings/Getty Images for TechCrunch) Snoop Dogg said that Hollywood films about African-Americans “keep showing the abuse we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago” and ignore their accomplishments in today’s society. “When you all going to make a series about the success that black folks is having?” he asked. “The only success we have is ‘Roots’ and ’12 Years a Slave’ and s**t like that, huh?” He urged his followers to boycott such shows. “I ain’t watching that s**t, and I advise you motherf***ers as real n*****s like myself; f*** them television shows,” Snoop said. “Let’s create our own s**t based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. 4. Not long after the French Jewish group UEFJ sued Twitter, Facebook and Google in Paris for how they monitor hate speech on the Internet, the social media platforms are vowing to tackle hate speech within the next 24 hours. Over the course of about six weeks in April and May, the anti-discrimination watchdog flagged what they described as undoubtedly racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic hate speech, 90 percent of which was reportedly found on Twitter and YouTube. The majority of that hate speech, the UEFJ said, remained online for an average of 15 days following requests for removal. Photo by Bethany Clarke/Getty Images Beyond national laws blocking hate speech, there is a need to make sure such commentary from social media users is “expeditiously reviewed by online intermediaries and social media platforms, upon receipt of a valid notification, in an appropriate time-frame,” Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., Google, Microsoft Corp. and the European Commission said Tuesday in a joint press release. The new policy standards surface as Europe comes to terms with the deadly terrorist attacks in Brussels and Paris by the Islamic State, which is known for its prolific use of social media to spread its radical message. The social media companies said it remains a “challenge” to find the right balance between freedom of expression and hate speech in the self-generated content. “We remain committed to letting the tweets flow,” Karen White, Twitter’s head of public policy for Europe, said in a statement. “However, there is a clear distinction between freedom of expression and conduct that incites violence and hate.” Facebook executives offered a similar statement, adding that there is “no place” for hate speech on the popular platform. “With a global community of 1.6 billion people we work hard to balance giving people the power to express themselves whilst ensuring we provide a respectful environment,” Monika Bickert, head of global policy management for Facebook, said. “There’s no place for hate speech on Facebook.” — Source

  9. DIETRICH, Idaho (AP) — Teaching her children how to peacefully respond to racist comments in a tiny Idaho town was not new for the mother of 20 adopted children, many of whom are black. She often found herself echoing the virtues taught in Dietrich’s only church. Kindness and patience can overcome ignorance in the mostly white, rural community, she told her kids. Forgive. Turn the other cheek. Then her black teenage son joined the football team. Within months, three of his teammates used a coat hanger to sexually assault him in a school locker room, prosecutors say. The attack came after the woman said she spent months trying to convince school officials that her and her husband’s concerns about the repeated racist harassment directed at their children needed to be treated seriously. In this Thursday, May 26, 2016 photo, the only school building sits empty as the last day of school was unexpectedly cancelled in Dietrich, Idaho. The cancellation was announced amid the small community struggle with the national attention brought by reports that a disabled black football player was raped by his white high school teammates. The allegations of racist taunts and physical abuse suffered by the teen were revealed this month when the family filed a $10 million lawsuit against the Dietrich School District. (AP Photo/Kimberlee Kruesi) The allegations of prolonged racist taunts and physical abuse were revealed this month when the family filed a $10 million lawsuit against the Dietrich School District. It claims the school failed to prevent the abuse even though much of it happened in front of football coaches and school officials. Three teens have been charged in the Oct. 23 assault: two with felonies in adult court and one in juvenile court. In the lawsuit, the victim contends one of his teammates pretended to want to hug him but instead held him down so 17-year-old Tanner Ward and 18-year-old John Howard could assault him. Ward has pleaded not guilty, and Howard has not yet entered a plea. The juvenile court case is sealed. “Sometimes I wish I hadn’t said anything,” the mother said. “Then we could have lived a quiet life. But when you’re right, you sometimes have to stand alone.” The Associated Press does not generally identify victims of sexual abuse and is withholding the woman’s name to avoid identifying her son. Ward’s attorney declined to comment, saying he was court-ordered not to discuss his client’s case with the media. Howard’s attorney did not return a request for comment. The victim’s mother, who is white, said her son was not alone in experiencing hurtful comments from fellow students. Another son was called the N-word in grade school, a daughter was called “Aunt Jemima,” and another child was told by fellow students to “go back to Africa.” The school district treated the taunts with indifference, she said. School officials have repeatedly denied requests for comment from the AP. However, other residents of the town that revolves largely around church and school sports say it’s a safe and welcoming place. They’re stunned by the allegations, but some are unhappy the family took the district to court. It’s not the first time the family has been on the wrong side of local public opinion. The teen’s father, a teacher at the school, received an ethics complaint in 2013 for saying the word “vagina” during a biology class. The complaint was eventually deemed unfounded, but the incident made national headlines, and the mother said residents who treated their family with disdain a few years ago have returned with the same anger. Melissa Towne, 37, who has spent her whole life in the town of about 330 people, says Dietrich is a good place despite the negative attention. People wave at one another as they pass on the mostly gravel roads, and Towne makes it a point to welcome the occasional new neighbor. “We never had this kind of attention when I was in school,” she said. “But I still like it here. We have good people here. I like living in a small town, and so do a lot of people who live here.” Most residents attend church in the simple Mormon building that marks the town’s main entrance. Basketball is the favored sport because of a series of state championships, but the high school football program is gaining popularity thanks to a recent winning streak and new equipment donations. “In this town, it’s all about your name and how athletic you are,” the victim’s mother said. She and her husband have lived in Dietrich for more than two decades, though many of their children are older and have moved away. Large families and adoptions are common in the Mormon faith. Most families in Dietrich, about 125 miles east of Boise, tally their time there in decades, not years. “Everyone who is from here pitches in and helps each other,” said Clay Divine, who has lived in the town for more than 30 years. “Those kids were not from here. This is a nice community.” Still, Ward is practically a next-door neighbor in the rural region where the nearest Wal-Mart is 40 miles away. He hails from Richfield, a slightly larger town of about 480 just 16 miles away. Howard, accused in the lawsuit of being the ringleader in the attack, moved to Dietrich last year from Keller, Texas, a city nestled inside the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. But he’s related to a Dietrich celebrity – Acey Shaw, a beloved girls’ basketball coach who led the team to a record five state championships. The town rallied around Shaw after he contracted a rare bovine disease that stole his ability to walk and most of his ability to talk. The victim’s lawsuit cited that family connection, arguing school officials looked the other way on Howard’s behavior because of his relatives. It also said the victim has mental disabilities, though it does not elaborate. His mother declined to discuss specifics about the boy and the case. Divine said he felt bad for the victim and understands why the state pressed charges against his teammates. But the lawsuit has given the town another black eye, Divine said, and in the insular community, that offense can be hard to forgive. “This lawsuit really has people divided,” Divine said. “But it happened on the coaches’ watch, and this is something that young man is going to have to live with his whole life.” Divine’s children grew up in the Dietrich school system, where they played sports and studied hard in a safe environment. He’s not sure that’s the case now. “This is a good town for my grandchildren. I just don’t think I would send them to the school anymore,” he said. Just down the road, the victim’s mother was working in her front yard, waiting for a call back from a real estate agent. After 21 years in Dietrich, they’re searching for someplace safer. 10. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry penned a Fox News op-ed blasting a recent report that Chris Kyle — the late Navy SEAL known as the “American Sniper” — embellished his military record by claiming he was awarded more medals than he actually received. Chris Kyle (AP Photo) Perry called the Intercept, which ran the article on Kyle, a “click-hungry website” and a “leftwing publication whose only knowledge of the military was likely acquired while Googling derogatory slogans to scrawl on protest signs.” He added that the Intercept’s research was “inadequate” and produced a “slanted interpretation of valid data and some overly dramatic language.” More from Perry’s Memorial Day opinion piece: The guiding premise of the article was that Chris Kyle, known to a grateful nation as its best-ever sniper in multiple combat zones, was a liar. The writer’s assertion is that Kyle laid claim to more medals than the military had awarded him for his valor in combat. At issue was a disparity between Kyle’s account in his book, “American Sniper,” records obtained from a seemingly indifferent Navy through a Freedom of Information Act request and Kyle’s official DD-214. The first mentioned two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars, the Navy recalled one Silver Star and 3 Bronze Stars and the DD-214 credited him with TWO Silver Stars and SIX Bronze Stars. If there is any inaccuracy in Kyle’s account it’s that he didn’t take ENOUGH credit for his awards. As any veteran will tell you, a DD-214 is THE definitive record of a person’s time in the military, used to prove the authenticity, duration and character of said service. The official name for the form is Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty and veterans learn early on to keep a copy handy. In separation briefings, service members are carefully coached to review it thoroughly because, once it’s filed, it’s filed. According to the Intercept’s piece, the Navy had this to say about “authoritative sources” for service members. “The Navy considers the individual service member’s official military personnel file and our central official awards records to be the authoritative sources for verifying entitlement to decorations and awards,” according to Cullen James, a spokesperson for the Navy Personnel Command, in a statement the Intercept said it received via email. “The form DD214 is generated locally at the command where the service member is separated. Although the information on the DD214 should match the official records, the process involves people and inevitably some errors may occur.” The Intercept’s report included apparent quotes from Navy officials and retired SEALs — none of them named — who indicated Kyle embellished his record. It added that Kyle’s widow, Taya Kyle, “through a representative, declined to comment about her husband’s service record.” Perry, in his op-ed, wondered if articles like the Intercept’s are “a byproduct of nearly eight years of an arch-liberal in the Oval Office combined with an American population increasingly disconnected from the men and women who serve in the military.” Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry watches during a visit to the Arizona border with Mexico in Douglas, Arizona. (AP Photo/Ricardo Arduengo) Concluding his piece, Perry called for the “retraction and deletion of the offending article and reprimand of the Navy personnel who have fed this misperception with their lackadaisical handling of the original information request. Both also owe an apology to Taya, Chris Kyle’s loving widow, and to service members, past and present, for disparaging one of their own.” Read more stories from TheBlaze Glenn Beck Skewers Rubio For Supporting Trump: ‘You Have No Credibility With Me Any More’ Libertarians Select 2016 Ticket on Wild Convention Day, Party Chairman Candidate Strips on Stage (Seriously) ‘The End of Moral Absolutes?’: As ‘Christian Morality Is Being Ushered Out,’ New Study Reveals Where Americans Stand on Ethics Famed Physicist Stephen Hawking Weighs in on Trump: ‘He’s a Demagogue…’ Trump Tells Rolling Thunder Crowd: Illegal Immigrants Treated Better Than Veterans in U.S. Source

  13. Howard Krongard, a former State Department top watchdog, said he would have immediately investigated Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server during her tenure of secretary of state had he been inspector general at the time of her appointment. Krongard, appointed by President George W. Bush, served as the agency’s inspector general from 2005 to 2008. In an interview with Fox News, Krongard said he had his own problems with Clinton’s persistence that her private server was permissible. “Certainly to my knowledge at least, Secretary [Condoleezza] Rice did not have a personal server,” Krongard said in an interview with Fox News. “I certainly never either sent an email to one or received an email from one.” Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton speaks to voters in South Carolina. (Getty Images/ Spencer Platt) “I would have been stunned had I been asked to send an email to her at a personal server, private address,” he continued. “I would have declined to do so on security grounds, and if she had sent one to me, I probably would have started an investigation.” Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner, has repeatedly said, even after the current inspector general’s report was released, that her use of her server was not “unprecedented” as other secretaries of state did the same thing. However, as Krongard noted in his interview with Fox News, the IG report specifically contradicts that claim as it revealed that only Colin Powell used a personal email and only occasionally. He also worked with the State Department to ensure his email was secure — something the report found that Clinton did not do. Krongard also said that there was no Senate-approved inspector general in place during Clinton’s four-year tenure as secretary of state. Without that watchdog, Krongard suggested, Clinton benefited from a lack of oversight. “I would’ve been the most unpopular person in that building [had I been there],” Krongard told Fox News. “They are the people who enforce the rules, and there was no one enforcing the rules during that time.” Krongard also challenged how classified material ended up on Clinton’s server — a feat he said “may not have been easy” given the restrictions in place in the State Department with regard to copy machines and computer networks. — Follow Kaitlyn Schallhorn (@K_Schallhorn) on Twitter Read more stories from TheBlaze Glenn Beck Skewers Rubio For Supporting Trump: ‘You Have No Credibility With Me Any More’ Libertarians Select 2016 Ticket on Wild Convention Day, Party Chairman Candidate Strips on Stage (Seriously) ‘The End of Moral Absolutes?’: As ‘Christian Morality Is Being Ushered Out,’ New Study Reveals Where Americans Stand on Ethics Famed Physicist Stephen Hawking Weighs in on Trump: ‘He’s a Demagogue…’ Trump Tells Rolling Thunder Crowd: Illegal Immigrants Treated Better Than Veterans in U.S. Source
