  1. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that North Korea attempted to launch an unidentified missile at about 5:20 a.m. local time but that it is presumed to have failed. A man watches a TV news program showing a file footage of a missile launch conducted by North Korea, at the Seoul Train Station in Seoul, South Korea, Saturday, April 23, 2016. The Korean letters at top left read: “North Korea fires a submarine-launched ballistic missile or SLBM.” (AP Photo/Lee Jin-man) The JCS says it is further analyzing the situation, and gave no other immediate details. The apparent launch failure comes amid tensions over recent nuclear and missile progress that has outsiders worried North Korea is closing in on its goal of a nuclear missile that can hit mainland America. South Korea has also rejected recent North Korea overtures to talk, part of what some analysts see as an attempt to start dialogue meant to win the impoverished country aid. 15. LONDON (TheBlaze/AP) — Renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking may have a good grasp of the workings of the universe, but he says he can’t understand Donald Trump’s popularity. Hawking tells ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” show Tuesday that he has no explanation for the success of the presumptive Republican Party presidential nominee. “He is a demagogue who seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator,” Hawking says in prerecorded comments to be broadcast when the show airs at 6 a.m. London time (0500 GMT, 1 a.m. EDT) Tuesday. Professor Stephen Hawking delivers his speech on January 17, 2007 in London, England.. (Getty Images/Bruno Vincent) Hawking, who speaks through a computer system operated with his cheek, also made a plea for British voters to choose to remain in the European Union in the June 23 referendum. He said it is important not only for economic and security research but also to further scientific research. Hawking says: “Gone are the days we could stand on our own, against the world. We need to be part of a larger group of nations, both for our security, and our trade.” Hawking also reportedly advocated for remaining a part of the EU because of immigration. “There are two obvious reasons why we should stay in. The first is that it promotes the mobility of people. Students can come here from EU countries to study, and our students can go to other EU universities. More importantly, at the level of research, the exchange of people enables skills to transfer more quickly, and brings new people with different ideas, derived from their different backgrounds,” Hawking said. “The other reason is financial,” he continued. “The European Research Council has given large grants to UK institutions, either to foster or promote exchanges.” Hawking has a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, that has gradually paralyzed him since he was first diagnosed at age 21. — Follow Kaitlyn Schallhorn (@K_Schallhorn) on Twitter Read more stories from TheBlaze Libertarians Select 2016 Ticket on Wild Convention Day, Party Chairman Candidate Strips on Stage (Seriously) ‘Enough is Enough’: Feinstein Unequivocally Defends Clinton, Urges Media to Drop Email Controversy ‘The End of Moral Absolutes?’: As ‘Christian Morality Is Being Ushered Out,’ New Study Reveals Where Americans Stand on Ethics Trump Campaign Manager Corey Lewandowski Offers Bizarre Response When Asked if Trump Offices Are Being Bugged Video Emerges of Boy Falling into Closed-Off Gorilla Exhibit at Ohio Zoo, Team Shoots Gorilla Source
  16. Former Attorney General Eric Holder still thinks Edward Snowden should be punished for leaking classified intelligence documents that exposed the country’s global surveillance programs but argued that the former National Security Agency contractor “performed a public service.” “We can certainly argue about the way in which Snowden did what he did, but I think that he actually performed a public service by raising the debate that we engaged in and by the changes that we made,” Holder said during “The Axe Files” podcast produced by CNN and the University of Chicago Institute of Politics and hosted by Democratic political operative David Axelrod. “Now I would say that doing what he did — and the way he did it — was inappropriate and illegal,” the former attorney general also said of Snowden. Holder’s comments did not seem to go unnoticed by Snowden who seemingly tweeted in response to Holder’s interview Monday evening as well as retweet journalist Glenn Greenwald. Snowden faces two counts of violating the Espionage Act and one count of theft. He has said that he does not plan to return to the U.S. unless he is sure that he will face a fair trial. “I think that he’s got to make a decision. He’s broken the law in my view,” Holder told Axelrod in the interview. “He needs to get lawyers, come on back, and decide, see what he wants to do: Go to trial, try to cut a deal. I think there has to be a consequence for what he has done.” “But I think in deciding what an appropriate sentence should be, I think a judge could take into account the usefulness of having had that national debate,” Holder added. 24. A Texas man paid his speeding ticket with 22,000 pennies to “protest” the fine. Brett Sanders of Frisco, Texas told KXAS‑TV that he did “nothing wrong” by driving 9 miles an hour over the speed limit on his street. “I didn’t hurt anybody. I didn’t endanger anybody’s life,” he said. Sanders fought the $220 ticket in court, but he lost his case. “When my fine came due, I just decided I might as well pay with pennies and we’ll make a big spectacle of it,” Sanders said. He went to the bank to withdraw the coins and brought them to the Frisco Municipal Court in five-gallon buckets, where he proceeded to dump them on the counter. He recorded the incident and posted the video to YouTube. “It felt great. It really felt great,” he said. The staff at the Municipal Court told KXAS that it took them three hours to count the coins, and Sanders actually overpaid the city by $7.81. “I’m just going to go ahead and let them keep that,” he said.
