  6. Katie Couric announced in an official statement Monday evening that she regrets a “misleading portion” of her new documentary “Under the Gun.”

The documentary, which Couric produced and narrated, claims to present both sides of the debate over gun control. But that aim was called into question when a gun rights group, the Virginia Citizens Defense League, accused the veteran television journalist of using “creative editing” to produce an “infomercial for gun control.”

    Katie Couric

    Katie Couric (Andy Kropa/Invision/AP)

In the disputed “Under the Gun” scene, VCDL members appear to be stumped after Couric asks them about background checks for “felons and terrorists.”

“If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorist from walking into, say, a licensed gun dealer and purchasing a gun?” she asks.

The question is followed by several seconds of silence.

Couric and her team came under fire last week after the VCDL provided audio to the Washington Free Beacon showing that they responded to Couric’s question almost immediately.

“I take responsibility for a decision that misrepresented an exchange I had with members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League,” Couric said Monday night.

Couric noted in her statement, however, that the edits were actually made by the documentary’s director, Stephanie Soechtig.

Soechtig told The Wrap last week that she would “never misrepresent someone’s point of view and I don’t think I did by doing this.”

Katie Couric and “Under the Gun” director Stephanie Soechtig (Valerie Macon/AFP/Getty Images)

Couric initially stood by the director’s assertion. But as criticism mounted, she determined that an apology was in order after all.

“When I screened an early version of the film with the director, Stephanie Soechtig, I questioned her and the editor about the pause and was told that a ‘beat’ was added for, as she described it, ‘dramatic effect,’ to give the audience a moment to consider the question,” the journalist said in the four-paragraph statement.

Couric acknowledged that she should have stuck to her initial instinct and insisted that the scene be edited to accurately portray to VCDL.

After the VCDL and other conservative groups and media outlets determined that Soechtig’s apology was not sufficient, Couric said she “went back and reviewed” the interview, and “agree[d] that those eight seconds do not accurately represent their response.”

The website for “Under the Gun” posted a transcript of the VCDL interview Monday along with Couric’s statement. There was, however, no indication that the documentary would be modified.

Couric ended her statement by noting one of the film’s main objectives: ”I hope we can continue to have an important conversation about reducing gun deaths in America, a goal I believe we can all agree on.”

  9. It was late in the afternoon on Memorial Day when motorcyclists — returning from a ride to mark the solemn holiday — apparently started having trouble with the driver of a car north of Tampa, Florida.

According to WTSP-TV, another motorist said a group of bikers were run off the road by the driver. And when the bikers caught up with the driver, WTSP said the other motorist started videotaping the altercation.

The now-viral video shows the bikers and the driver apparently arguing in traffic lanes in the town of Lutz when the driver takes the disagreement to an outrageous level.

    Here’s the clip:

“I thought the guy was trying to kill us, obviously,” Calderazzo told WTSP on the phone as he was headed to the hospital to get his leg looked at. “Is he going to put the car in reverse? Is he going to turn around? Is he going to stop and pull out a gun? You don’t know what’s going on.”

Calderazzo and his passenger were hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries, WTSP said. His passenger was identified as Melanie Ann Milinkovich, WFLA-TV reported.

Police caught up to the driver and arrested him, WTSP said. He’s been indentified as Robert Paul Vance, 31, of Land O’ Lakes, which is about seven minutes north of where the incident occurred.

Vance is being held without bond and is facing one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving injury and one count of operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license, WFLA reported. Florida Highway Patrol told the station Vance is classified as a habitual traffic offender.

Vance has a long rap sheet, WFLA said, highlighted by two stints in state prison as well as convictions for drug, burglary and felony traffic charges out of Brevard County.

  13. The suspect in a deadly shooting in Houston, Texas, has been identified as Dionisio Garza III of San Bernardino, California, according to KTRK-TV.

The Associated Press reported that a gunman opened fire at a Houston auto detail shop Sunday. According to NBC, the shooting left two people dead and six people injured.

    https://twitter.com/miyashay/status/737398395753533440

Garza, 25, an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, was discharged from active duty in 2014, and KTRK found no record of criminal history.

Reporters with KTRK said they discovered “personal papers, documents, bullets and a military bag” at the scene of Sunday’s shooting, which they brought to a police officer’s attention. The items were collected as evidence.

KTRK reports that those documents included a copy of Garza’s birth certificate and his military discharge record. The record showed that Garza achieved the rank of sergeant and received several awards during his service, including “the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two campaign stars and the Army Achievement Medal, among others.”

In an interview with KTRK, Garza’s stepmother, who was not named by the affiliate, said she believes her stepson was suffering from PTSD.

“He was a kind, loving, smart kid. He did two tours in Afghanistan. I think he was proud to be in the military, but I know he went through a lot,” she said. “He was in the Airborne Infantry, I don’t think he ever came back the same. He had lots of friends. He seemed happy.”

“I can’t help but to think about the other families affected by this. It just wasn’t him. That’s not who he was. I don’t know what happened. But that’s not who he was,” she continued. “I know he caused a lot of pain to a lot of people that were involved and we are truly sorry for that.”

  16. AR-15 inventor Jim Sullivan is seeking to clarify comments he made about guns in a recent interview on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” saying the network “misrepresented much of what I said.”

“They were apparently trying to make the AR-15 civilian model seem too dangerous for civilian sales,” he wrote in The Federalist Tuesday. “They didn’t lie about what I said, they just omitted key parts, which changed the meaning.”

Sullivan wrote that the moments in the interview he takes issue with are in regard to discussion about the AR-15 when he says he “appears” to say the civilian model is equally as effective as  the military-grade M16. According to Sullivan, HBO omitted when he clarified, “When firing semi-auto only” and “the select fire M16 on full auto is of course more effective.”

Additionally, he objected to the discussion on military and hunting bullets, adding that, due to the Hague Convention, military-grade bullets cannot be hollow points like hunting bullets “that give up all of their energy in the target body instead of passing through with minimum wound effect.”

Sullivan wrote that Armalite, a small arms engineering company, “went the small-caliber, high-velocity route and gave the bullet the right twist of 1:14 to be stable in air but unstable in tissue,” which he said was in compliance with the Hague Convention.

“This gave us a small cartridge that was half the size, weight, and recoil of a 7.62 NATO,” he wrote, “so the soldier could carry twice the ammo, fire controllable full auto, and be far more deadly out to 300 yards, the three characteristics that determine military rifle cartridge effect.”

He also said the 5.56 “can’t compete” with hunting bullets, which can legally be expanding hollow points that are more lethal than tumbling.

There was also a point in the interview that Sullivan said was made to look as if he was unhappy with the fact that AR-15 are popular in the civilian market.

“5.56 is only half as powerful as the 7.62 NATO (.308) hunting bullet. That doesn’t mean I’m not pleased to see AR-15s sell on the civilian market,” he wrote. “It just means I didn’t realize they would 57 years ago.”

  18. A Texas man is in jail under the suspicion of killing his girlfriend and then posting a photo of her dead body to her Facebook page.

Police say Kenneth Alan Amyx, 45, posted a photo of the body of his girlfriend, Jennifer Steit-Spears, 43, along with a photo of his bloodied face to the victim’s Facebook page Sunday with the caption, “Please pray for us and love you all,” KTVT-TV reported.

Police arrived to the scene after Streit-Spears’ sister called 911, police spokesman David Tilley told New York Daily News. Officers found Amyx in the Plano apartment with multiple stab wounds and Streit-Spears fatally stabbed.

Amyx was later taken to a hospital, where it was determined that his wounds were self-inflicted, according to KDFW-TV.

    Jennifer Steit-Spears (Image source: KTVT-TV)

Streit-Spears’s sister, told the Daily Dot that she was horrified when she saw the photos online. Despite her attempts to report the graphic images to Facebook, the photos were not taken down until Monday evening.

“I did ask them to remove it several times,” the sister, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Daily Dot. “They told me I could block Jennifer if I didn’t like what she posted and gave me other similar options.”

A Facebook spokesman told the Daily News that the photos were left up because the social networking site thought the gruesome photos could have been a call for help from the victim, not the alleged killer.

“Facebook has long been a place where people share their experiences and raise awareness about important issues,” the spokesperson explained. “Sometimes, those experiences and issues involve violence and graphic images of public interest or concern.”

After Facebook was notified that the post came from the suspected killer, the photos were finally taken down from Streit-Spears’ Facebook account, which has been turned into an “in remembrance” page.

Streit-Spears’ friend, Fran Stamey, said she was also horrified when she saw the photo of a dead woman on her friend’s Facebook page.

“The pictures were not clear although they were extremely scary. I just started to reach out to our mutual friends to see if they’ve heard anything,” Stamey told KTVT.

Amyx is being held in Collin County Jail with bond set at $600,000. According to inmate records, Amyx has previously been convicted of ongoing sexual abuse of a child, as well indecent exposure to a child in Dallas County.

The post is now being used as evidence in the case.

  23. PERTH, Australia (AP) — A shark tore a 29-year-old surfer’s leg off Tuesday at an Australian west coast beach, officials said.

The man was attacked at Falcon Beach, a popular surfing spot in the town of Mandurah, south of Perth city, emergency services said.

Royal Perth Hospital chief executive Margaret Sturdy said he would be flown 70 kilometers (45 miles) to the hospital’s trauma center once his condition had been stabilized by medical staff in Mandurah.

“He is currently in a serious condition with a serious injury, a significant shark bite and is getting a lot of medical input,” Sturdy said.

Mandurah Mail newspaper reporter Nathan Hondros said he arrived at the beach shortly after the attack and found ambulance crews trying to resuscitate the victim.

“He had lost a leg from what looked like above the knee, so it was quite a savage attack by the looks of it,” Hondros told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

A Falcon Bay Beach Cafe worker told Australian Associated Press that two men rushed in asking for ice, saying someone’s leg had been bitten off.

Life guards had tweeted earlier Tuesday that a 3.5-meter (11-foot) white shark had been seen off a nearby beach on Tuesday morning.

It was the first serious shark attack in Australia since March, when 22-year-old professional surfer Brett Connellan was badly injured off an east coast beach south of Sydney.
