  12. ARLINGTON, Va. (TheBlaze/AP) — President Barack Obama laid a wreath Monday at the Tomb of the Unknowns to honor members of the military who died serving their country. Obama’s appearance at Arlington National Cemetery carries on a longstanding presidential tradition and comes as the U.S. struggles to end various conflicts in the Middle East. In his remarks, Obama called for Americans to honor the fallen by caring for those they leave behind — their families and their battle buddies who come home. “We need to be there not just when we need them, but when they need us,” Obama said of the nation’s veterans. Obama said 20 members of the armed forces had died in combat within the last year. Special operations forces continue to serve in dangerous missions in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, even as the U.S. military presence in the latter two countries has been greatly reduced under Obama’s watch. The focus in Iraq and Syria is on defeating the Islamic State group. In Afghanistan, U.S. troops work with Afghan forces battling the Taliban. Obama also remembered the members of the U.S. military in his weekly address Saturday. “Right now there are American troops serving in harm’s way and standing sentry around the world,” Obama said. “There are veterans who’ve served honorably in times of war and peace, and often came home bearing the invisible and visible wounds of war. They may not speak the loudest about their patriotism; they let their actions do that. And the right time to think of these men and women, and thank them for their service and sacrifice, is every day of the year.” Prior to traveling to Arlington, Obama held a breakfast reception at the White House for family members of fallen service members and veterans groups. — Follow Kaitlyn Schallhorn (@K_Schallhorn) on Twitter Read more stories from TheBlaze Libertarians Select 2016 Ticket on Wild Convention Day, Party Chairman Candidate Strips on Stage (Seriously) ‘So Sickening’: What Vandals Have Done to Calif. 13. POZZALLO, Sicily (AP) — It was the cries of children — and the moment they decided they must save themselves — that haunt the survivors of a shipwreck that claimed hundreds of lives. Two Eritreans who arrived safely in Sicily told The Associated Press on Sunday how the sea kept seeping into their rickety fishing boat despite all efforts to bail the water out. Eventually, the sea prevailed. Between 400 and 550 on their smugglers’ boat didn’t make it, part of the estimated 700 migrants who perished inMediterranean Sea shipwrecks over three days last week in the deadliest known tally in over a year, as calm weather and sunny skies increased smuggling crossings from Libya. Migrants being rescued at sea. Survivor accounts have pushed to more than 700 the number of migrants feared dead in Mediterranean Sea shipwrecks over three days in the past week, even as rescue ships saved thousands of others in daring operations. (Italian Navy via AP) “When the morning came, I saw how the children were crying and the women,” Habtom Tekle, a 27-year-old Eritrean, told the AP through an interpreter. “At this point I only tried to pray. Everybody was trying to take the water out of boat.” The rickety wooden boat without an engine was being towed by another smugglers’ boat laden with hundreds of other migrants, signaling the increasing desperation of the smugglers. Once the second boat started sinking Thursday, the commander on the first boat ordered the tow line cut, apparently to keep his boat from sinking as well, according to Italian police interviews of survivors. The line, at full tension, whipped back, fatally slashing the neck of a female migrant, police said. By then, Filmon Selomon, a 21-year-old Eritrean, had plunged into the sea. He told the Associated Press that knew he could only save himself. “I started to cry when I saw the situation and when I found the ship without an engine. There were many women and children,” he said. “Water was coming in from everywhere, top, bottom.” Tekle described people holding onto each other, some dragging others underwater, as the boat was sinking. “For me, it was very shocking,” he said through an interpreter. Police put the number below deck at 300 and said they all perished as the boat sank. Some 200 more plunged into the sea, but only 90 of those were saved, along with 500 from the first boat. Migrants receive first aid as they disembark from the Italian Navy Vega vessel, in Reggio Calabria, southern Italy, after being rescued in the Mediterranean Sea off the coasts of Libya. (AP Photo/Adriana Sapone) A 17-year-old Eritrean, Mohammed Ali Imam, who arrived on Sicily five days ago in another rescue, told the AP that one of the survivors told him that the second boat started taking on water when the first boat ran out of fuel. Italian police said survivors identified the commander of the tow boat as a 28-year-old Sudanese man, who has been arrested and faces possible charges for the deaths. Three other smugglers involved in other crossings also were arrested, police announced. Italian police tallies indicate some 400 died. But Carlotta Sami, spokeswoman in Italy for UNHCR, put the number of migrants and refugees missing in that incident at 550 based on a higher tally of 670 people on board the second boat. She said 15 bodies were recovered, while 70 survivors were plucked from the sea and 25 swam to the other boat. Sami said many of the survivors have been traumatized by the shipwrecks. Most of the people on board were Eritrean, according to Save the Children, including many women and children. One of the survivors included a 4-year-old girl whose mother had been killed in a traffic accident in Libya just days before embarking, said Giovanna Di Benedetto, a Save the Children spokeswoman in Italy. The UNHCR’s Sami also said estimated 100 people are missing from another smugglers’ boat that capsized Wednesday off the coast of Libya, captured in dramatic footage by Italian rescuers. And in a third shipwreck on Friday, Sami said 135 people were rescued, 45 bodies were recovered and an unknown numbers of migrants were still missing. Because the bodies went missing in the open sea, it is impossible to verify the numbers who died. Humanitarian organizations and investigating authorities typically rely on survivors’ accounts to piece together what happened. “The situation is really worsening in the last week,” said Di Benedetto. Survivors of Thursday’s sinking were taken to the Italian ports of Taranto on the mainland and Pozzallo in Sicily. Migrants being rescued at sea. (Italian Navy via AP) Italy’s southern islands are the main destinations for countless numbers of smuggling boats launched from the shores of lawless Libya each week packed with people seeking jobs and safety in Europe. Hundreds of migrants drown each year attempting the dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossing. Tekle and Selomon both fled mandatory, open-ended conscription in Eritrea. Tekle has been on the move for six years, spending time in Egypt, Israel, Uganda and Sudan before heading to Libya to take the risky sea journey to Italy. “I want to tell the world this way is dangerous for us. Because my brother, sister, family will lose their lives in this channel,” Tekle said as he waited to have his arrival in Italy recorded. “Please help us to have freedom in our country. I don’t want to stay here or any place. I want my county with freedom.” Read more stories from TheBlaze Libertarians Select 2016 Ticket on Wild Convention Day, Party Chairman Candidate Strips on Stage (Seriously) ‘So Sickening’: What Vandals Have Done to Calif. 19. Two United States military veterans are on a mission to inform others about the devastating effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). U.S. Marine veteran Michael Priddy and U.S. Army veteran David Allison have set out to raise $1 million to fund a Christian ministry that serves the spiritual and psychological needs of former servicemen. To do this, Priddy and Allison decided to launch a 47-day, cross-country bicycle tour that would raise awareness for PTSD. Image source: YouTube/The Eternity Challenge The two began the 2,700-mile No Man Rides Alone bicycle tour on April 28 in Squaw Valley, California. From there, they will ride town-to-town until they reach their final destination: the Marine base in Quantico, Virginia. Last week, Priddy spoke with the Christian Post about his experience so far. Priddy, who served in the War in Iraq and served as a Department of Defense contractor in Iraq and Afghanistan, explained his personal battle with PTSD, which “made him feel like a monster” and eventually led to a divorce and the breakdown of his family. It was only after attending a six-day retreat program run by the Christian ministry Mighty Oaks Warrior Programs in August 2014 that Priddy began his road to recovery. Mighty Oaks, which has seven outposts across the U.S., aims to help veterans and active duty military personnel struggling with PTSD discover God’s plan for their lives. The Christian Post reported that 22 veterans and 1 active duty service member commits suicide every day, but none of Mighty Oaks’ 1,000 alums has committed suicide. “It’s just the gospel of Jesus Christ and the healing power that can only come from Him and when the men decide to accept Christ,” Priddy explained. “It is just that instance when you make that decision and that instance that you get it and finally submit and fall to the altar and say, ‘Ok God, do with me what You will.’ That is the thing that starts the healing process.” “As any person of faith knows, you are going to struggle everyday,” he added. “But, Mighty Oaks creates a brotherhood that we missed from the military — the comradery — it’s all the same kind of men who are going through the same things. We are all just going to keep marching towards being Christ-like every single day and that is where the healing comes from.” Priddy shared that once this healing process begins, “suicide gets taken off of the table from there,” as these suffering individuals begin to pursue God’s purpose for their lives. Image source: YouTube/The Eternity Challenge Priddy works as an instructor at Mighty Oaks’ Sacramento-area outpost, which opened in February 2015. The Marine vet shared that earlier this year, his biking partner and fellow veteran, David Allison, completed the Mighty Oaks program in Sacramento. Shortly after that, Allison, an Army veteran who also served 30 years as a policeman, came up with the idea of launching a bike tour to serve struggling military personnel and raise money for Mighty Oaks’ Sacramento outpost. Allison then recruited Priddy, who came on board the project immediately. Now, about midway through the journey, Priddy shared that they ride between 35 miles and 100 miles each day. Thy stop in select towns to visit with veterans at churches, VFW’s, American Legions and other community gathering places. “My concern is getting the message out and meeting veterans that are struggling that want to get better, that want to heal and fix the relationships that they have broken,” Priddy said. “I tell my story to anyone and everyone that will listen and I have been blessed to meet a bunch of men who have been struggling and want to go through the program and want to get better and have gotten signed up and are just waiting to go.” Joining the two veterans on their journey are colleagues who ride behind them in a vehicle carrying spare bicycle parts, shirts and other gifts for people that donate to their cause. Priddy said that riding a bicycle across the country presents many physical challenges, like biking through the Rocky Mountains at about 11,000 feet above sea level. But for Priddy, Allison and their colleagues, the trip has been a testament to God’s ability to supply strength and motivation to keep moving forward. “We have scripture reading every morning. Before we set out each morning, we all come together and pray. Sometimes its really, really difficult, especially going over the path in Colorado,” Priddy shared. “It wasn’t very easy. There were a bunch of times where I wanted to just fall over but God kept whispering to me that ‘You can do it.’” To learn more about No Man Rides alone, or to donate, click here.
