  6. CINCINNATI (TheBlaze/AP) — The Cincinnati Zoo’s director on Monday defended the decision to kill a gorilla to protect a boy who entered its exhibit, noting it’s easy to second-guess after the child was recovered safely.

The male western lowland gorilla named Harambe was killed Saturday by a special zoo response team that feared for the boy’s safety. Video taken by zoo visitors showed the gorilla at times appeared to be protective of the boy but also dragged him through the shallow moat. (Previous stories on this incident noted the boy’s age as 4, but a family spokesperson told WCPO-TV that he’s 3 years old.)

Director Thane Maynard said the gorilla was agitated and disoriented by the commotion during the 10 minutes after the boy fell. He said the gorilla could crush a coconut in one hand and there was no doubt that the boy’s life was in danger.

“We stand by our decision,” he said Monday, reiterating that using a tranquilizer on the 420-pound gorilla could have further threatened the boy because it wouldn’t have taken effect immediately.

“They made a tough quick decision that saved one boy’s life. We stand by our decision that it was the right thing to do at the time,” he said, according to the AP. “People can Monday-morning quarterback about the situation, but I am proud of the fast response and decisiveness of the team. It was a tough decision and we did not take it lightly to shoot our animal and it was a little boys life.”

Maynard said an investigation indicates the boy climbed over a 3-foot-tall railing, then walked through an area of bushes about 4 feet deep before plunging some 15 feet into the moat. The boy was treated at a hospital and released that same day.

The director said the zoo remains safe for its some 1.6 million annual visitors, but a review is underway for possible improvements.

Kim O’Connor, who witnessed the boy’s fall, told WLWT-TV that she heard the youngster say he wanted to get in the water with the gorillas. She said the boy’s mother was with several other young children and told him no.

Michelle Gregg identified herself on Facebook as the boy’s mother, Reuters reported — although her Facebook site appeared to be down Monday night. She reportedly noted in an online post that “accidents happen” and expressed condolences for the gorilla’s death:

Anthony Seta, an animal rights activist in Cincinnati, helped organize a vigil Monday just outside the zoo gates. He said the gathering wasn’t meant to assess blame but rather to honor Harambe, who turned 17 the day before he was shot.

“People can shout at the parents and people can shout at the zoo,” Seta said. “The fact is that a gorilla that just celebrated his birthday has been killed.”

In the days since, people have taken to social media to voice their outrage about the killing of a member of an endangered species. A Facebook page called “Justice for Harambe” was created along with online petitions and another page calling for a June 5 protest at the zoo.

A change.org petition calling for “Harambe’s Law, so there are legal consequences when an endangered animal is harmed or killed due to the negligence of visitors” has attracted over 80,000 signatures as of Monday night.

Maynard said the zoo had received messages of support and condolences from around the world, including from other zoo directors and gorilla experts. A spokesman for Jane Goodall, the famed primatologist, said she had “a private conversation” with Maynard, who said she expressed her sympathy.

Maynard said zoo visitors have been leaving flowers at the exhibit and asking how they could support gorilla conservation.

“This is very emotional and people have expressed different feelings,” Maynard said by email. “Not everyone shares the same opinion and that’s OK. But we all share the love for animals.”

The Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas, where Harambe spent most of his life, said Monday that its staff was deeply saddened by the gorilla’s death:

Harambe was sent to Cincinnati less than two years ago in hopes he would eventually breed with females there. Maynard said the zoo has some of Harambe’s sperm saved for research and possible future reproductive use.

Many social media commenters have criticized the boy’s parents and said they should be held accountable. A Cincinnati police spokesman said no charges were being considered. A spokeswoman for the family said Monday they had no plans to comment.

“I do think there’s a degree of responsibility they have to be held to,” said Kate Villanueva, a mother of two children from Erlanger, Kentucky, who started the “Justice for Harambe” page and attended Monday’s vigil. “You have to be watching your children at all times.”

Jack Hanna, host of “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild,” said the zoo made the right call by shooting the gorilla. Hanna said he saw video of the gorilla jerking the boy through the water and knew what would happen if the animal wasn’t killed.

“I’ll bet my life on this, that child would not be here today,” Hanna told WBNS-TV.

The zoo said that it’s the first such spectator breach at Gorilla World since it opened in 1978. The director said expansion plans announced for the exhibit earlier this year would proceed as scheduled.

Gorilla World remained closed Monday, but Maynard said it could reopen next weekend.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released a statement from its primatologist Julia Gallucci saying the zoo should have had better barriers between humans and the gorillas.

“This tragedy is exactly why PETA urges families to stay away from any facility that displays animals as sideshows for humans to gawk at,” Gallucci said.

  9. CIUDAD VICTORIA, Mexico (AP) — About 24 hours after he was kidnapped, Mexican soccer star Alan Pulido found himself alone with one of his captors and saw his chance. He wrestled away the man’s pistol and his cellphone and dialed Mexico’s emergency number.

    Within minutes, he was free.

An official summary report of three calls to an emergency operator obtained by The Associated Press shows the 25-year-old forward for Olympiakos in the Greek league threatened and beat his captor while on the phone, demanding to be told where they were.

FILE - In a June 29, 2014 file photo, Mexico's Alan Pulido consoles teammate Javier Hernandez (14) after the Netherlands defeated Mexico 2-1 during the World Cup round of 16 soccer match between the Netherlands and Mexico at the Arena Castelao in Fortaleza, Brazil. (AP Photo/Eduardo Verdugo, File)

The dramatic account of derring-do shows that Pulido — listed at 5-foot-9 (176 centimeters) and about 150 pounds (68 kilograms) — was the main actor in his own liberation, a contrast with initial official accounts of a rescue by police.

On a first call, with the kidnapper overpowered, Pulido peered out of a window and described the white two-story house with two cars, grey and red, parked in front.

In the next call, Pulido told the operator that state police had arrived outside. The operator told him to fire the pistol so they would know they were in the right spot, but Pulido said he had no bullets. He said police themselves were starting to shoot and described his shorts and tank top so they wouldn’t confuse him with the now-unconscious captor.

Once police arrived, he made a third call to confirm with the operator that they were trustworthy.

Tamaulipas state Attorney General Ismael Quintanilla had said at a news conference that emergency services received Pulido’s call for help after midnight Sunday due to “a careless act by his captors.”

In a later interview with Imagen Radio, Quintanilla confirmed that Pulido had forcibly seized the phone from his captor.

“There was an exchange of punches between them,” Quintanilla said, though he did not mention the pistol.

Quintanilla said Pulido cut his wrist when he broke a window trying to escape.

Pulido was nabbed by four armed people on a highway while returning from a party at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. His girlfriend, who was not taken, alerted others.

“Everyone began to activate to look for him, especially when we knew who he was, because we knew it was going to make a big ruckus and was going to be affecting us a lot in the press,” Quintanilla said.

Quintanilla said the army and federal and state police participated, including three helicopters.

Pulido’s family received the first ransom call around 1:30 p.m. Sunday and a second one a short time later, Quintanilla said.

The suspect was a 38-year-old from the Gulf coast state of Veracruz who Quintanilla said was a member of one of the criminal organizations operating in the city. He said three other suspects were identified and a search was underway.

After he was freed, Pulido was taken for medical and psychological review and then provided a statement to investigators.

He made a brief appearance before reporters, responding only to a question about how he was: “Very well, thank God.”

On Monday afternoon, Pulido thanked everyone for praying for his family through his official Twitter account. “They helped us a lot in this terrible experience of our lives that we do not desire for anyone.” He also thanked state and federal authorities for their help in his rescue.

Mexican Federal Police Commissioner Enrique Galindo said in an interview on Radio Formula that authorities believe the kidnappers were motivated solely by the potential financial gain of ransom — which was not paid.

The player’s Greek club expressed relief over his safe escape from kidnappers.

“Alan is safe and sound with his family. We thank everyone for their concern and prayers during the difficult moments he has lived,” Olympiakos said via Twitter.

The kidnapping happened one week before scheduled elections for a new governor. Tamaulipas, which borders Texas, has been plagued with violence in recent years as the Gulf and Zetas drug cartels battle for control. Both organizations also are involved in theft, extortion and kidnappings.

Pulido made his professional debut with the club Tigres of Monterrey, Mexico, but after four seasons there signed a 2014 contract with Olympiakos. He since has been embroiled in a legal dispute with Tigres over whether his Mexican contract remains valid.

He was on Mexico’s 2014 World Cup squad, but was omitted from the team for next month’s Copa America. National team coach Carlos Osorio recently said Pulido was omitted because of his contract troubles. He scored three goals in earlier call-ups for Mexico. He scored five goals in limited action for Olympiakos last season.

According to government statistics, there were 41 reported kidnappings in Tamaulipas in the first four months of this year compared to 78 during the same period last year. The actual number is believed to be much higher since most people do not report kidnappings to authorities.

Also from January to April 2016, there were 179 homicides in the state, compared to 211 during the same period last year.

Mexico saw another soccer-related kidnapping in 2005, when Cruz Azul’s Argentine coach, Ruben Omar Romano, was abducted in Mexico City. He was held 65 days before being freed by federal police.
