  20. LOS ANGELES (TheBlaze/AP) — A Vietnam War memorial in the Venice area of Los Angeles has been extensively defaced by graffiti. Screengrab via KCAL-TV The vandalism occurred sometime during the past week, KCAL/KCBS-TV reported. The homespun memorial painted on a block-long wall on Pacific Avenue lists the names of American service members missing in action or otherwise unaccounted for in Southeast Asia. The wall has been tagged previously, but the latest vandalism covers the bottom half of the memorial for much of its length. More from KCAL-TV: To George Francisco, vice president of the Venice Chamber of Commerce, it’s not just graffiti. “It’s a desecration. I mean it’s very simple. There’s no sort of other way around it,” said Francisco, who also runs a nonprofit called Veterans Foundation Inc. “I’ve known the sacrifices these people made in an incredibly unpopular war. So to continue the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans is somewhat shocking, somewhat shocking and quite sad,” Francisco said. Painted by a Vietnam veteran and dedicated in 1992, it declares, “You are not forgotten” and states the number of missing as 2,273. Another resident, Stewart Oscars, was equally distraught by the vandalism. “This knocked me out. So sickening. Just sadness…think of all these people. They’re gone,” he said. “I remember the Vietnam war and how friends went to war, and bodies came back. Somehow, it has to be taught that this is not a good idea. This is actually stupid.” According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, the number of unaccounted-for Americans was listed at 2,646 in 1973. About half were those missing in action, and the others were those killed in action but the body was not recovered. Since then, the remains of more than 1,000 American have been identified and returned and about 1,600 have still not been accounted for, although efforts continue. — Read more stories from TheBlaze Obama Calls for a ‘World Without’ Nuclear Weapons During Historic Hiroshima Visit Trump Backs Out of Proposed Debate With ‘Second Place Finisher’ Sanders In Rambling Speech, Palin Unleashes on Obama for ‘U.S. Apology Lap’ in Hiroshima Cruz Vows to Fight Trump on Key ‘Judeo-Christian Principles’ in RNC Platform What Happens When Jews, Christians and the Unreligious Are Asked About Morality of Polygamy, Abortion and Homosexuality? 21. HENDERSON, Ky. (AP) — Residents of a Kentucky county are rallying and working frantically to repair and replace a Memorial Day cross display that was vandalized by a driver accused of plowing through the crosses. (AP Images) The cross display in Central Park in Henderson, which is about 130 miles west of Louisville, honors the names of more than 5,000 who served in conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War. “It has really upset the entire community,” said Jennifer Richmond, a spokeswoman for the Henderson city police department. “This is something you don’t do. This is a form of desecration. These people served their country and then someone disrespected their memory in this way, and it’s just totally unacceptable.” The names on the crosses, she said, represent soldiers who died in conflicts or veterans who returned home and later passed, all from the city and county of Henderson. Volunteers and the American Legion put the crosses up in May each year for a Memorial Day remembrance ceremony. Police got a call just before 6 a.m. Saturday, Richmond said, alerting them that someone had driven through the display at the park. “Our officers got there and saw that someone drove right through the crosses and essentially plowed them down,” Richmond said. Surveillance footage from nearby, she said, showed a late 1970s model Ford Thunderbird driving on a sidewalk. The vehicle description, along with Facebook posts from concerned community members, led police to Anthony Burrus, a 27-year-old Henderson resident. Burrus has been charged with criminal mischief in the first degree and leaving the scene of an accident. Online jail records do not list an attorney for him. Some of the crosses were embedded in the tires of his vehicle, she said. Police don’t know if he deliberately drove over the plastic crosses, she said. “He said he didn’t do it. He admitted to driving the vehicle in the morning but would not state that he drove through the park. But the evidence is in his car tires.” An estimated 160 crosses need to be repaired or replaced. “We’re hoping to have all of them replaced by Monday,” said Richmond, who has relatives honored by crosses in the park. “But we don’t know right now.” — Source

  25. A high school senior in Flushing, Michigan, was recently suspended for wearing a “Keep Calm and Carry Guns” T-shirt — and he’s putting up a fight for his First Amendment rights. Screengrab via WEYI-TV Andrew Eichorn, 18, told WEYI-TV that he attended his first two classes of the day without incident, but was called to assistant principal’s office during third period. Eichorn recalled his exchange with the assistant principal: “She told me you’re either going to have to change, turn it inside out, or go find a new one. You’re not going back to class. I said I’m not doing any of those because it’s my First Amendment right,” said Andrew. The assistant principal then suspended Andrew saying his shirt was inappropriate, and promoted weapons and violence. “I asked her how does it promote violence? She said because guns are dangerous. I said for something to have violence, it has to have emotion and for something to have emotion it has to be living. So the very essence of her telling me a gun has violence means you’re telling me a gun is living. There has to be an actual person using the gun,” says Andrew. Eichorn later sent a letter to the National Rifle Association — and he got a supportive response back. But there’s a surprise ending to this story. Amid the backlash,The Flushing Community School District released a statement apologizing to Eichorn over the incident: The Flushing Community Schools recognizes and respects the rights of all students and families within the Flushing community, including the First Amendment right of free expression. The District’s dress code policy as currently written and implemented as it relates to this situation, was in error. We apologize to the student and his family. We will be meeting with the family and their representative to further address this matter constructively. We will work to clarify the policy to assure a situation like this does not occur again. As we enter into the Memorial Day Weekend and honor those who have sacrificed their lives, it is fitting to reaffirm our commitment to upholding all constitutional rights, including that of free speech. Mark Eichorn, the student’s dad, said he was proud of his son for standing up for his rights. “Until people start waking up and realizing that we need to do something more about these criminals and thugs and punish them instead of good law-abiding citizens,” he said.
