  4. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (TheBlaze/AP) — The Libertarian Party again nominated former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson as its presidential candidate Sunday, believing he can challenge presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton because of their poor showing in popularity polls.

    AP

    AP

The nomination was the biggest — but certainly not the only news — out of the party’s convention on Orlando, Florida, on Sunday.

Johnson, 63, won the nomination on the second ballot at the convention, defeating Austin Petersen, the founder of The Libertarian Republic magazine; and anti-computer virus company founder John McAfee. The delegates selected former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld to be his vice presidential running mate.

Johnson, the party’s nominee in 2012, told the delegates during his acceptance speech that his job will be to get the Libertarian platform before the voters at a level the party has not seen.

“I am fiscally conservative in spades and I am socially liberal in spades,” Johnson told The Associated Press. “I would cut back on military interventions that have the unintended consequence of making us less safe in the world.”

At one point on Sunday, Petersen reportedly confronted Johnson over the selection of Weld as his running mate. Johnson apparently told his rival, “This is not the place” and walked away.

While Petersen has endorsed Johnson, he referred to Weld as a “horrible statist.”

    Then of course, this happened.

The man, a candidate for party chairman, said after his performance he would be dropping out. He added, “I’m sorry, it was a dare.”

    OK, back to actual politics.

On fiscal matters, Libertarians push for reduced spending and taxes, saying the federal government has gotten too big across the board. Johnson proposes eliminating federal income and corporate taxes and replacing those with a national sales tax.

He would reduce domestic spending by eliminating the Internal Revenue Service, the Commerce and Education departments, the Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

On social issues, Libertarians generally support abortion rights, gun rights, same-sex marriage and drug legalization, saying people should be allowed to do anything that doesn’t hurt others.

Johnson served as New Mexico’s governor from 1995 to 2003 as a Republican after a career as the owner of one of that state’s largest construction companies.

After failing to gain traction in the GOP’s 2012 primaries, he changed his registration to Libertarian shortly before running for that party’s nomination that year. He won the nomination and got just short of 1 percent of the general election vote against President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

For Johnson to make a serious run this year, he needs to qualify for the presidential debates. To do that, he must average 15 percent in five recognized polls.

He hopes that is doable because Trump and Clinton are both seen unfavorably by a majority of voters, according to recent polls.

    AP Photo

    AP Photo

Johnson will also need to overcome a huge financial disadvantage and history.

In 2012, Obama and Romney spent over a billion dollars each, a figure Trump and Clinton, if she is the Democratic nominee, are expected to also reach. Johnson spent $2.5 million in 2012, about one dollar for every 400 Obama and Romney each spent. Johnson hopes to raise “tens of millions of dollars” this time.

“Then we can leverage that to a level where we could wage political war” by hiring staff and running TV and radio commercials, Johnson said. He said Weld will help in this effort, having raised about $250 million during his political career compared to Johnson’s $8 million. Weld, 70, was Massachusetts governor from 1991 to 1997, also as a Republican.

The Libertarian Party has been running presidential tickets since 1972, but has never been a major factor. The party’s best showing was 1980, when candidate Ed Clark got slightly more than 1 percent of the vote. The only electoral vote the party has received was in 1972, when a renegade Virginia elector pledged to President Richard Nixon cast his ballot for Libertarian John Hospers instead.

Third parties have never won a U.S. presidential election. Former Republican President Teddy Roosevelt, running on the Bull Moose Party ticket, got 27 percent of the popular vote and 88 electoral votes in 1912. He finished second to Democrat Woodrow Wilson, the only time a third party candidate has finished that well.

Other notable third-party runs include former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, who got 13 percent of the popular vote in 1968, winning 45 electoral votes; and billionaire businessman Ross Perot, who got 19 percent of the popular vote in 1992 but no electoral votes.

  5. HOUSTON (AP) — A man came into a Houston auto detail shop and began shooting, killing a man known to be a customer and putting a neighborhood on lockdown Sunday before being killed by a SWAT officer, police said.

Several people were shot and injured, including a man authorities initially described as another suspect because he was present and armed. Police said later Sunday they were investigating further whether he played any role.

Three others – two of them male and one female – were hospitalized with injuries police said were not believed to be life-threatening. Two officers were shot, but a union official said they should be OK.

Police, who said they have no indication yet of a motive, said they got their first call about the shootings around 10:15 a.m. The customer described as a man in his 50s had just driven in to the auto shop. Within a minute or two, authorities said, the gunman came in and started shooting. Others in the shop ran out to take cover nearby and call for help.

Neighbors described hearing many gunshots, and some drivers told local television stations their cars had been shot at. Police say they believe a fire at a gas station next door began when gunfire hit a pump. A police helicopter was shot at with a “high-powered” weapon and was hit five times, authorities said.

Stephen Dittoe, 55, lives in the house right behind the shooting scene, separated by a fence and tall shrubbery at the end of cul-de-sac.

“I heard the first shot and I thought it was a transformer” exploding, he said. His wife, Ha, 41, said it went on too long for that and described the series of staccato sounds.

She took their two children, ages 6 and 7, into the bathroom, told them to eat breakfast in there, and called 911.

About an hour after the shootings began, a SWAT officer killed the gunman, said Police spokesman John Cannon.

“If he hadn’t taken that action that quickly, this likely would have been a lot worse than it was,” Cannon said.

Houston Police Union President Ray Hunt says an officer who was hit several times in the chest was wearing both a metal breastplate and a bulletproof vest. The second officer was shot in the hand. Hunt says both officers hurt should be OK.

At the Dittoe house, Ha Dittoe said police came to the door about two hours later and asked if anyone in the house was being held captive, and if they could walk around the backyard.

The streets were still blocked off late Sunday afternoon with many police cars and fire trucks on the scene. A police SUV was seen with a shattered windshield and the back window broken out, and police said two patrol cars were riddled with bullets.

  7. Legendary “Late Show” host David Letterman seems to be enjoying retirement — just look at the beard.

That fact was more than apparent on Saturday when he brazenly admitted that he was drunk live on the air during ESPN’s Indianapolis 500 coverage.

It was after recalling a story of his recent alcohol-fueled antics, Letterman made the candid admission.

“By the way, I’m drunk now,” Letterman said, prompting cheers from the crowd.

  8. Katie Couric has remained noticeably silent amid allegations that her documentary, “Under the Gun,” was deceptively edited to make gun rights activists look bad.

    Katie Couric

But according to “an individual with knowledge of Couric’s thinking,” she regrets the “unnecessary mistake.”

“It did not represent editing someone’s sentences, there was no factual error, this is not a mistake that is a substantive mistake. It could have been avoided,” the source told The Wrap. “This was a poor decision that was made and it involves silence.”

In the disputed “Under the Gun” scene, gun rights activists are asked about background checks for “felons and terrorists” — and they seem to respond with several seconds of dumbfounded silence. However, outraged members of the Virginia Citizens Defense League later provided audio to the Washington Free Beacon showing that answers were provided almost immediately.

Still, Stephanie Soechtig, the director of the documentary, said she would “never misrepresent someone’s point of view and I don’t think I did by doing this.”

Critics have blasted the documentary as unbalanced and intended to make gun rights activists look bad.
