  9. WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Donald Trump was focusing on veterans Sunday at the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally.

The Memorial Day weekend event, which got its start in 1988, also honors members of the military missing in action.

Motorcyclists began their procession from the Pentagon, crossed the Potomac River and rode around the National Mall, ending up at a rally by the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

Speaking to the crowd Sunday, Trump said that illegal immigrants are cared for better in the United States than the nation’s military veterans.

The presumptive GOP nominee also told those attending the rally that if elected, he plans to “knock the hell out of” the Islamic group by building a bigger, better military.

He also reiterated his promise to build a wall to keep out people from entering the country illegally.

“Who’s going to pay for the wall?” he bellowed. The crowd yelled back: “Mexico.” ”Not even a doubt!” he said.

Trump has a loyal following with bikers, who frequently attend his rallies. Among those eager to hear Trump speak was Louis Naymik, 52, of Clarksburg, Maryland, who said he served in the Ohio Army National Guard for four years.

“There’s history in the air here,” he said. “We’re living in historic times in our country today with the election and the choosing of a new president. And I just wanted to give honor to those who have fallen and sacrificed their lives for our country.”

Naymik, who works in radiology, was wearing a Trump shirt and said he had been a supporter since the day Trump announced his candidacy.

“What I like about Trump is that he is one of us. He’s not a politician,” he said, adding that Trump would bring the country back to its old values, put American citizens first and honor its veterans.

  13. DELTA, Pa. (TheBlaze/AP) — A couple who got lost in Pennsylvania while driving to New York entered the property of a nuclear plant by cutting a chain at a gate, apparently in a quest to get back on the right road, authorities said.

The Chesapeake, Virginia, couple were driving from Baltimore on Friday night when they got onto an access road at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, owned by Exelon. The driver told police he didn’t see two “no trespassing” signs when he cut the chain on the gate, the York Daily Record reported.

Exelon spokeswoman Krista Merkel said the couple never posed a threat to the plant and security was monitoring them the entire time they were on plant property.

“It seemed they inadvertently made it to our property and were trying to find their way back out,” Merkel said. “They thought the only way they could get back was to cut the fence.”

Police initially said, after consulting with security staff, that the man and woman appeared to have made it to “a highly security sensitive area where radioactive material is transferred from the main power plant. If the couple had gone inside a nearby outbuilding, the plant would have been placed on lockdown and there was a “possibility of lethal force being used,” authorities said in court documents.

But Merkel said Saturday that the couple hadn’t made it to any areas where radioactive materials are transferred or stored and didn’t make it past security officers who constantly monitor all sides of the plant. She said the couple was “very cooperative” and waited until police arrived.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Diane Screnci also said there was no threat to the plant or harm done to equipment, and officials believe “security at the plant is appropriate.”

Nuclear plants have at least two resident inspectors from the agency who watch things like work activity, and the Inspectors may go in on Tuesday to go over the arrest and what happened, Screnci said.

The couple was charged with trespassing. The woman was also charged with possession of a controlled substance. Police said she had a small metal pipe that smelled like marijuana.

  15. Two Alabama Chick-fil-A restaurants are honoring missing soldiers who lost their lives defending our country with a very special Memorial Day weekend display.

    Image via Facebook

    Image via Facebook

The Gardendale and Fultondale Chick-fil-A locations each set up a decorated table with an empty seat. The table is draped with a white tablecloth, a place setting, a rose in a vase and a note reminding diners who visit the restaurant why Memorial Day is celebrated every year.

Both restaurants included a photo of the display on their Facebook pages, along with a copy note, which explains how each decorative element on the table is significant.

    The note reads:

We cover a small table with a white cloth to honor a soldier’s pure heart when he answers his country’s call to duty. We place a lemon slice and grains of salt on a plate to show a captive soldier’s bitter fate and tears of families waiting for loved ones to return. We push an empty chair to the table for the missing soliders who are not here. We lay a black napkin for the sorrow of captivity, and turn over the glass for the meal that won’t be eaten. We place a white candle for peace. And finally a red rose in a vase tied with a red ribbon for the hope that all our missing will return someday. You are not forgotten so long as there is one left in whom your memory remains.

The stores also advertised a special Memorial Day deal for those who are serving or have served in the the U.S. military. Patrons with a military I.D. card are eligible for a free original chicken sandwich on Monday, May 30.

  18. An Iraqi refugee seeking asylum in Berlin was wearing a t-shirt he’d just bought that said, “I’m Muslim, don’t panic” when he was reportedly assaulted Monday evening by three other Muslim refugees, according to the Berlin Morgenpost and other local outlets (translated).

The 23-year-old victim had to be rushed to the hospital after he was beaten, according to the reports.

It is unclear if the shirt is what provoked the attack, but the Morgenpost reported that the t-shirt was torn from the victim’s body before the assailants fled.

According to the Daily Mail, the three suspected attackers “accused him of offending their religion” before deciding “to teach him a painful lesson.”

Two of the alleged attackers, a 27-year-old from Syria and a 33-year-old from Lebanon, were later arrested on charges of aggravated grievous bodily harm, according to the Morgenpost.

The body responsible for handling politically motivated crimes will determine if the attack was sparked by a previous conflict or if indeed it was the t-shirt alone that provoked it.
