CINCINNATI (TheBlaze/AP) — The Cincinnati Zoo has temporarily closed its gorilla exhibit after a special zoo response team shot and killed a 17-year-old gorilla that grabbed and dragged a 4-year-old boy who fell into a moat.
Zoo officials said the boy fell after he climbed through a public barrier at the Gorilla World exhibit Saturday afternoon. He was picked up out of the moat and dragged by the gorilla for about 10 minutes.

Authorities said the child, who has not been identified, fell 10 to 12 feet. He was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he is expected to recover. Hospital officials said they couldn’t release any information on him.
Zoo Director Thane Maynard said the zoo’s dangerous animal response team decided the boy was in “a life-threatening situation” and that they needed to put down the 400-pound-plus male gorilla named Harambe.
“They made a tough choice and they made the right choice because they saved that little boy’s life,” Maynard said. “It could have been very bad.”
But he mourned the loss of the gorilla, which came to Cincinnati in 2015 from the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas.
“We are all devastated that this tragic accident resulted in the death of a critically endangered gorilla,” he said in a news release. “This is a huge loss for the zoo family and the gorilla population worldwide.”
Witness Kim O’Connor shared video she and her family recorded with WLWT-TV of the boy and Harambe. The two appear in a corner of the exhibit while a voice yells “Somebody call the zoo!” and “Mommy’s right here.” Later, the two are shown in the moat. At one point, Harambe touches the boy’s back and arms. A woman’s voice is heard saying “Be calm, be calm.”
The station reports more graphic parts of the video not shown include Harambe dragging the boy.
Two female gorillas also were in the enclosure when the boy fell in but zoo officials said only the male remained with the child.
Maynard said the gorilla didn’t appear to be attacking the child, but he said it was “an extremely strong” animal in an agitated situation. He said tranquilizing the gorilla wouldn’t have knocked it out immediately, leaving the boy in danger.
It was the first time that the team had killed a zoo animal in such an emergency situation, Maynard said. He called it “a very sad day” at the zoo.
The area around the gorilla exhibit was closed off Saturday afternoon as zoo visitors reported hearing screaming.
Maynard said the zoo believes the exhibit remains safe.
The zoo will be open on Sunday but officials said the gorilla exhibit has been closed until further notice.
The zoo prides itself for its work in protecting endangered species, and has been part of successful captive breeding efforts in recent years in the effort to save the endangered Sumatran rhino.

Following his comments earlier this week that he’s willing to be “helpful” to presumptive Republican nominee, Donald Trump, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday to reflect on his own presidential campaign and his recent change in tone.
The former Republican presidential candidate, who finally said he would support Trump in November, also confessed a series of blunders he believe ultimately cost him the race.

In what was perhaps the most notable admission, Rubio told host Jake Tapper that he apologized privately to Trump backstage before a Republican debate for remarks he’d made mocking the candidate’s appearance, and namely, his “small hands.”
“I actually told Donald — one of the debates, I forget which one — I apologized to him for that,” Rubio said. “I said, ‘You know, I’m sorry that I said that. It’s not who I am and I shouldn’t have done it.’ I didn’t say it in front of the cameras, I didn’t want any political benefit.”
After this, Rubio went even further, telling Tapper that he would be willing to speak on Trump’s behalf at the July convention, and voicing his newfound respect for the man he formerly condemned as a con artist.
In the in-depth interview, Rubio lauded Trump as “the ultimate change agent,” adding that he may be able to develop “a more comprehensive approach” on some policy questions.
The Florida senator noted that, though he likely wouldn’t employ the same strategies if he were in Trump’s position, the candidate clearly knows what it takes to achieve success in this race.
“I don’t think he should change if he’s been successful,” Rubio said when pressed about Trump’s references to previously debunked scandals of the 1990s in his attacks on Democratic front-runner, Hillary Clinton.
“I may not like that direction, but at this point, he won and this is the direction that he won on,” he said.
Ahead of the CNN interview that aired Sunday, the Democratic Party posted a video to YouTube targeting Rubio’s reversal on Trump.
Rubio got into multiple arguments on Twitter Friday with people who couldn’t accept his modified position. And though he asserted that he tried his hardest to stop Trump from becoming the nominee, he contended that at this point, the GOP’s biggest threat is Clinton, not Trump.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders thinks the American people should be wary of a candidate like Donald Trump, whom he says changes his mind on “virtually every issue.”
In an interview that aired Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Sanders discussed the proposed debate between himself and the presumptive GOP nominee.

Despite the fact that he was the first person to entertain the idea, Trump issued a statement Friday saying that he would not debate Sen. Sanders, noting that “it seems inappropriate that I would debate the second place finisher.”
Sanders told “Face the Nation” host John Dickerson that it is this sort of behavior that makes Trump an untrustworthy candidate.
“Donald Trump said he wanted to go forward, then he changed his mind, said no, then he changed his mind and said yes, then he changed his mind and said no,” Sanders told Dickerson. “Maybe we’ll get a call in five minutes and he’ll say yes again. I think that is who Donald Trump is, and I think the American people should be very concerned about somebody who keeps changing his mind not only on this debate, but on virtually every issue he’s been asked about.”
One of the reasons Trump gave for declining the debate was that Sanders is a victim of a “totally rigged” Democratic nomination process, and his campaign is effectively over.
Dickerson asked Sanders whether he agrees with Trump’s assessment.
“Well, I’ve been very touched by Donald Trump’s love for me,” Sanders replied sarcastically. “But John, you know, with all due respect, I think there may be some aspect of this which he thinks will advantage himself. So I do appreciate his love and his compassion for me, but I don’t really accept his words.”

Sanders went on to explain that he and his supporters knew ahead of time that they would be “taking on the entire Democratic establishment.” But, he added, given the success his team has seen in 20 states, he thinks he has a “good chance” of winning California in the June 7 primary.
Sanders noted, as he has in the past, that the race is an “uphill fight,” but said that there is still “a possibility that we may end up at the end of this nominating process with more pledged delegates than Hillary Clinton.”
“What has upset me, and what I think is — I wouldn’t use the word ‘rigged’ because we knew what the rules were — but what is really dumb, is that you have closed primaries, like in New York State, where three million people who were Democrats or Republicans could not participate,” Sanders explained. “You have a situation where over 400 super delegates came on board Clinton’s campaign before anybody else was in the race, eight months before the first vote was cast. That’s not rigged, I think it’s just a dumb process which has certainly disadvantaged our campaign.”
