  4. This week the country’s sixth largest daily newspaper, the Chicago Tribune, was met with a deluge of criticism after it posted this ad on Facebook, offering discounted subscriptions during the Memorial Day weekend. Image source: Facebook The ad offered a 50 percent discount for new subscribers to the Tribune’s online news portal and optional home delivery. Despite the substantial price reduction, many Facebook users were not pleased with the manner in which the newspaper displayed the American flag. Almost immediately, negative remarks flooded the comments section below the online ad. The unhappy comments featured a mix of those unhappy with the commercializing of Memorial Day and the apparent, incorrect display of the American flag in the pitch. Based on the Flag Code of the United States of America, the people posting angry comments appear to be justified. According to the Flag Code, “The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever.” Additionally, for display purposes (in print, hanging on a wall or in a window), the code also outlines the correct position of the flag, with the union (the stars on the blue field) on the observer’s left. TheBlaze is attempting to reach the Chicago Tribune offices for comment and to see if the ad will be changed. — Follow the author of this story on Twitter and Facebook: Follow @stuntbrain Read more stories from TheBlaze Washingtonian Editor: People Shouldn’t Say ‘Start a Family’ Because It’s Offensive ‘That’s Very Offensive’: Reporter Confronts Trump for Calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ — He Responds Like You’d Expect Obama Calls for a ‘World Without’ Nuclear Weapons During Historic Hiroshima Visit Professor Claims ‘Neo-Nazi’ Ben Shapiro’s Campus Lecture Left Students ‘Brutalized’ Trump Backs Out of Proposed Debate With ‘Second Place Finisher’ Sanders Source

  9. Liberal Comedian Bill Maher delivered a nasty blow to the people of Arkansas on “Real Time” Friday evening while discussing the latest developments in the Hillary Clinton email probe. In an attempt to explain his view that the so-called scandal is nothing more than poor judgement on the part of the former secretary of state and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, Maher claimed that the Clintons just weren’t used to being held accountable by the simple people of Arkansas, where Mr. Clinton formerly served as governor. AP Photo/Evan Vucci “Now, like with all Clinton scandals, what they actually do is never really that bad … . It’s always how they handle it,” Maher explained. “I think what the problem is is that these two cut their teeth in Arkansas, and they got used to being able to fool rubes — excuse me, Arkansas — easily. It doesn’t work that way in D.C.!” he contiuned. Guest Melissa Harris-Perry voiced her agreement, saying that the reason why Hillary Clinton is perceived as being untrustworthy is twofold: It is partly due to her inability to address scandals when they arise and partly because of the Trump campaign’s vigorous efforts to depict her as “crooked.” The former MSNBC host called the resulting effect “confirmation bias.” Friday it was reported that over the months, Clinton misstated key facts about her use of private email and her own server for her work as secretary of state. The department’s inspector general found that Clinton claimed approval she didn’t have and declined to be interviewed for the report despite saying, “I’m more than ready to talk to anybody anytime.” Scrutiny of her unusual email practices appeared to be unwelcome, despite her contention those practices were well known and “fully above board.” Watch: Follow the author of this story on Twitter: Follow @carlyhoilman Read more stories from TheBlaze Washingtonian Editor: People Shouldn’t Say ‘Start a Family’ Because It’s Offensive ‘That’s Very Offensive’: Reporter Confronts Trump for Calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ — He Responds Like You’d Expect Obama Calls for a ‘World Without’ Nuclear Weapons During Historic Hiroshima Visit Professor Claims ‘Neo-Nazi’ Ben Shapiro’s Campus Lecture Left Students ‘Brutalized’ Trump Backs Out of Proposed Debate With ‘Second Place Finisher’ Sanders Source

  17. CINCINNATI (TheBlaze/AP) — The 96-year-old retired chest surgeon credited with developing the namesake Heimlich maneuver has used it to save a woman choking on food at his senior living center. Dr. Henry Heimlich was in the dining room at the Deupree House in Cincinnati, where he lives, when an 87-year-old woman sitting next to him began choking Monday night. AP Photo/Al Behrman The dining room manager, Perry Gaines, told the Cincinnati Enquirer that Heimlich dislodged a piece of hamburger from the woman’s airway and she quickly recovered. Heimlich said he was having dinner when he looked over at the woman sitting next to him and could see that her face was growing pink and she was obviously choking. He said he got up behind her and began the technique. “As soon as I did the Heimlich maneuver, a piece of meat with a bone in it immediately popped out,” he said. Choking victim Patty Ris said Friday that she couldn’t breathe and Heimlich rushed over to stand her up and dislodge the food. “I definitely would have died right then and there,” said Ris, who said she felt fine Friday and had no after-effects. “There was no doubt about it.” Ris said that after she regained her breath Heimlich explained to her what he had done. She told him afterward: “God put me in this seat next to you.” Heimlich said in interviews Friday that it was the first time he’d used his maneuver, and his son Phil Heimlich said he believed that was accurate. But the doctor said in at least one previous account, a 2003 interview he did with BBC News Online, that he had applied his emergency technique three years earlier. The Heimlich maneuver involves abdominal thrusts applied to a choking person in an effort to lift the diaphragm and force air from the lungs to dislodge any object. Heimlich has said he developed the maneuver after reading accounts of people choking in restaurants, with many of them dying. Through the years, he appeared on radio and television shows including “Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” to discuss and demonstrate the technique. Heimlich’s views on how and when the maneuver should be used have put him at odds with some people in the health field. 18. NEW YORK (TheBlaze/AP) — A small World War II vintage plane taking part in celebrations of its 75th anniversary flew a partial loop while smoke spewed from it and then crashed in the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey on Friday, and divers recovered a body from its sunken wreckage, police and witnesses said. The single-seat plane, a P-47 Thunderbolt, flew periodically, including to air shows. A witness to the crash, Hunter College student Siqi Li, saw smoke spewing from the plane and thought it was doing a trick. AP Photo/Julie Jacobson “It made kind of a U-turn, and then there was a stream of smoke coming from it,” Li told the Daily News. “It was tilting down toward the water. I thought they were doing some sort of trick. I didn’t realize it at first, but it was a plane crash.” Scuba divers recovered the body of a 56-year-old man from the submerged plane about three hours later, New York Police Department Detective Michael Debonis said. Police identified the body as William Gordon, of Key West, Florida. Gordon’s body was taken back to the New York shore via police boat. Several police officers carried a stretcher to the dock. The Federal Aviation Administration said the P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft, which went down near the George Washington Bridge around 7:30 p.m., was among three planes that had departed from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, on Long Island, just east of New York City. The other two aircraft returned to the airport and landed safely. The American Airpower Museum is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the P-47 Thunderbolt this weekend. Museum spokesman Gary Lewi said the plane was kept at the museum and was taking part in an air show at nearby Jones Beach this weekend. “Apparently the aircraft suffered an inflight engine failure,” Lewi said. “I’m told the aircraft is at the bottom of the Hudson.” The three planes, the P-47, a P-40 and a photo plane, had been flying over the Hudson to shoot promotional material for the Jones Beach air show, Lewi said. North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue co-director Jeff Welz told The Jersey Journal that firefighters and the Coast Guard responded after the Friday night crash. He said the plane sank “pretty quickly.” The P47-Thunderbolts were the heaviest single-engine fighter planes used by Allied forces in World War II. They first went into service in 1942, with the 56th Fighter Group based on Long Island. Friday’s crash occurred on a part of the river near where a US Airways commercial jet carrying 155 people splash-landed safely in 2009 in what became known as the Miracle on the Hudson. The plane’s pilot, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, became a household name after the incident.
