  1. A high school senior in Flushing, Michigan, was recently suspended for wearing a “Keep Calm and Carry Guns” T-shirt — and he’s putting up a fight for his First Amendment rights.

    Screengrab via WEYI-TV

    Screengrab via WEYI-TV

Andrew Eichorn, 18, told WEYI-TV that he attended his first two classes of the day without incident, but was called to assistant principal’s office during third period.

Eichorn recalled his exchange with the assistant principal:

“She told me you’re either going to have to change, turn it inside out, or go find a new one. You’re not going back to class. I said I’m not doing any of those because it’s my First Amendment right,” said Andrew.

The assistant principal then suspended Andrew saying his shirt was inappropriate, and promoted weapons and violence.

“I asked her how does it promote violence? She said because guns are dangerous. I said for something to have violence, it has to have emotion and for something to have emotion it has to be living. So the very essence of her telling me a gun has violence means you’re telling me a gun is living. There has to be an actual person using the gun,” says Andrew.

Eichorn later sent a letter to the National Rifle Association — and he got a supportive response back.

But there’s a surprise ending to this story. Amid the backlash,The Flushing Community School District released a statement apologizing to Eichorn over the incident:

The Flushing Community Schools recognizes and respects the rights of all students and families within the Flushing community, including the First Amendment right of free expression. The District’s dress code policy as currently written and implemented as it relates to this situation, was in error. We apologize to the student and his family. We will be meeting with the family and their representative to further address this matter constructively. We will work to clarify the policy to assure a situation like this does not occur again.

As we enter into the Memorial Day Weekend and honor those who have sacrificed their lives, it is fitting to reaffirm our commitment to upholding all constitutional rights, including that of free speech.

Mark Eichorn, the student’s dad, said he was proud of his son for standing up for his rights.

“Until people start waking up and realizing that we need to do something more about these criminals and thugs and punish them instead of good law-abiding citizens,” he said.

  8. VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) — Crews resumed their search along a Northern California creek for a teenage girl who was last seen being abducted by an armed acquaintance in Vallejo, about 65 miles south from the area being searched Saturday.

This undated photo provided by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office shows Pearl Pinson. Authorities are hoping to find the missing teenage girl alive as they frantically search a wide swath of California for her Friday, May 27, 2016, a day after the man suspected of abducting her died in a shootout with police. (Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office via AP)

The Solano County Sheriff’s Office said 65 people from several law enforcement agencies and search and rescue groups are looking for 15-year-old Pearl Pinson in the Willow Creek area of Sonoma Coast State Park.

The search on land and along a river for the high school freshman was suspended Friday at sundown.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Christine Castillo did not elaborate on what led investigators to the rural area, saying only that the strongest leads are there.

“Our number one priority is to bring her home to her family, and we do believe that is possible,” Castillo said Friday evening at the search site. “There are indications she could be possibly injured, and that is still a concern. … We want to locate her and get her any medical attention she needs.”

The search for the San Francisco Bay Area girl has been complicated by the death Thursday of the young man suspected of abducting her as she walked to school Wednesday.

Police fatally shot Fernando Castro, 19, in Southern California after they spotted his car and exchanged gunfire with him as they say he attempted to get away.

This undated photo provided by the California Highway Patrol shows Fernando Castro. Castro is the subject of an Amber Alert as law enforcement agencies in Northern California were frantically searching Thursday, May 26, 2016, for a 15-year-old girl, Pearl Pinson, whom a witness reportedly heard screaming for help as a young man dragged her across a freeway overpass. (California Highway Patrol via AP)

(California Highway Patrol via AP)

The incident started on Wednesday, when a witness saw Castro armed with a gun and pulling a screaming Pinson across a freeway overpass in the city of Vallejo, where they both lived. The witness reported hearing a gunshot while running for help.

Surveillance cameras captured images of Castro’s car traveling Thursday morning in Marin County, about 25 miles from where Pinson was taken and 300 miles away from where he was shot and killed hours later, authorities said. The gold Saturn sedan was spotted on a freeway near San Francisco Bay, and authorities also were searching the water’s edge.

Authorities said the two teens knew each other, but they emphasized that they believe Pinson was taken unwillingly. Rose Pinson, the missing girl’s older sister, said she had heard Castro’s name but had never met him and described him as an acquaintance, according to the Vallejo Times-Herald (http://tinyurl.com/gs68eut).

Blood and Pearl Pinson’s cellphone were found on the pedestrian overpass where she was taken Wednesday. A day later and hundreds of miles away, Southern California sheriff’s deputies spotted and pursued Castro’s car.

Castro abandoned the sedan about 45 miles north of Santa Barbara and shot at deputies as he ran into a mobile home park, the sheriff said. He briefly barricaded himself there, but a woman inside was able to escape safely.

He stole a gray pickup from the house and opened fire at deputies again before they shot and killed him, authorities said.

  11. Louisiana State Rep. Barbara Norton (D) is standing against a bill mandating students in the state are taught the Declaration of Independence — and the reason why is causing some controversy.

    Fox News

    Fox News

“For the Declaration of Independence, only Caucasians [were] free. And for you to bring a bill to request that our children will recite the Declaration, I think it’s a little bit unfair,” Norton said last week.

Critics were quick to condemn the lawmaker’s claim that the Declaration of Independence is somehow inherently racist.

“For her to be attacking the Declaration of Independence, that is attacking liberty, that is attacking freedom,” Deneen Borelli said on “Fox and Friends Weekend” on Saturday.
Borelli also said Norton should examine the racist history of her own party, “the party of the KKK.”

“Why not attack that history?” she asked.

  13. DALLAS (AP) — New Orleans Pelicans rookie Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot after breaking down the door to a Dallas apartment, authorities said Saturday.

Officers were called early Saturday and found the 23-year-old player collapsed in an outdoor passageway, Senior Cpl. DeMarquis Black said in a statement. Dejean-Jones was taken to a hospital where he died.

A person living at the apartment was sleeping when he heard his front door kicked open, Black said. The man retrieved a handgun and fired when Dejean-Jones began kicking the bedroom door.

Dejean-Jones was from Los Angeles and it wasn’t immediately clear why he was in Dallas.

“We are devastated at the loss of this young man’s life (and) who had such a promising future ahead of him,” the Pelicans said in a statement.

In his only NBA season, which ended in February because of a broken right wrist, the 6-foot-6 guard started 11 of 14 games and averaged 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds.

He was part of the 2014-15 Iowa State team that went 25-9, captured a Big 12 title and made a fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. He was fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.5 points in 33 games. He shot a career-best 47.6 percent in his lone season as a Cyclone. He also played at Southern California and UNLV.

“This is a very, very sad and tragic day for everyone that’s a part of the Cyclone basketball family,” Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said.

Former Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg added in a statement that Dejean-Jones was a “passionate and talented player that lived out his dream of playing in the NBA through hard work and perseverance.”

  15. CINCINNATI (AP) — Police say a young child fell into the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and has been taken to the hospital.

Cincinnati Police Lt. Steve Saunders says the child that fell on Saturday afternoon is about 3 years old and isn’t believed to have life-threatening injuries. Saunders says zookeepers reportedly used a tranquilizer on a gorilla as the child was rescued.

Zoo spokeswoman Michelle Curley says officials will provide an update after gathering details from zoo staff and security.

Saunders says the child was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. A hospital spokesman said he had no information to release. Authorities haven’t released the child’s name.

The incident was reported around 4 p.m. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the area around the gorilla exhibit was closed off Saturday afternoon.

  18. An MSNBC focus group excoriated Hillary Clinton for behaving as if she is “above the rules” in regards to her ongoing email scandal.

NBC News senior White House correspondent Chris Jansing spoke to a focus group of young women about the email controversy, and she got some interesting responses.

“I take national security really seriously and the idea that she would have a private email server, it demonstrates someone who thinks that they’re outside of the rules and not accountable,” one woman said. “It’s reckless. The most disappointing part about all of it is I don’t feel like she’s taken responsibility for it.”

    (MSNBC)

    (MSNBC)

One Clinton supporter, Jessica, said she understands the concerns about the email scandal, but claimed Clinton was “not the first person to do this.”

A third woman argued people in positions in power have a “responsibility and a duty to make sure that what they do is transparent.”

“The entire problem with this email server issue is that she’s not being transparent,” she said. “When someone doesn’t abide by the rules, they are not being transparent.”
