  2. Evangelist Franklin Graham spoke out against an Oregon school district’s recent decision to strike a settlement with a transgender teacher — an agreement that included a $60,000 payout for emotional damages and other related expenses, and a pledge to enact employee guidelines. Graham specifically took aim at an email sent by Hall Elementary School Principal Heidi Lasher that reportedly implored teachers who work with Leo Soell — the transgender fifth-grade teacher at the center of the dispute — to use the “correct name and pronouns” when addressing transgendered individuals. “[The district's anti-bullying] policies require that all staff address transgender or gender non-conforming employees with their correct name and pronouns,” Lasher wrote, according to the Oregonian. “If you are found to be in violation of these policies, you will be subject to discipline up to and including dismissal.” Graham said that the complaint that led to the implementation of the policy — one that was waged Soell, who was born as a woman but who does not embrace a male or female label — is entirely inappropriate. “That’s incredible!” he wrote on his Facebook page, speaking of Lasher‘s email. “Use ‘correct’ pronouns? Doesn’t a person’s DNA or birth certificate count for anything? Shouldn’t fact override fantasy?” Graham continued, “God created people male and female.” The evangelist’s comments came after the Gresham-Barlow School District agreed to pay Soell $60,000 for emotional damages after the teacher — who prefers to go by the pronoun “they” rather than she or he — claimed to be the victim of harassment after surviving breast cancer, having reconstruction surgery to have a more male-appearing chest and making the aforementioned gender identity issues public. Soell claimed to have been repeatedly called “she,” Miss Soell or “lady” despite not wishing to align with either gender. Additionally, Soell said that someone put Vaseline on classroom cabinets, yelled insults and tried to prevent the teacher from using the sole gender-neutral bathroom inside of the school, the Oregonian reported. Following complaints from Soell and the union last year, an agreement was forged to allow the teacher to be called “they” at school rather than he or she, but alleged harassment continued. After the district said that a review yielded no proof of such acts, Soell retained an attorney. In the end, the district settled, with Hall Elementary converting all staff bathrooms to be gender-neutral, and with the district paying $60,000 to Soell to cover emotional distress, attorneys fees and health expenses that were previously rejected by the insurance company. Another provision in the agreement is that official teacher guidelines will be drafted by August to help deal with issues pertaining to transgender employees. Read more about the story here. 3. When a Memphis mother found several gang-themed and inappropriate posts on her teenage sons’ Facebook pages, she made a decision to teach both of them an unforgettable lesson. Shonta Love told WREG-TV that she was stunned to find videos of her sons referencing the notorious Bloods gang and photos featuring sexual and rude conduct. “I look on here and I was like, ‘What in the world? I’m not raising him to be a thug,’” Love recalled So the mom ordered her sons to stand on the corner of the street with signs that read, “My mom works 3 jobs and I’m being disrespectful and ungrateful on Facebook.” They were forced to stay on the corner for 40 minutes. Predictably, some criticized the mother for shaming her sons — but Love said she has no regrets about her decision. For her, it’s about saving her sons. “I choose not to lose my boys to the street. Under no circumstances,” Love said. She also said both of her teen sons apologized to her over the Facebook posts. 7. The body of slain Massachusetts police officer Ron Tarentino Jr. was being taken to Morin Funeral Home in Leicester, the town where he lived, on Sunday afternoon. Tarentino was shot during a traffic stop shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday. Auburn Police Chief Andrew J. Sluckis Jr. said the killer — who was fatally shot in a standoff — shot Tarentino in the back, firing off five rounds, the Worcester Telegram reported. Officer Ron Tarentino Jr. (Image source: Auburn Police) As you would expect, the public came out in force and the police presence in honor of Tarentino was large that day. Walter Bird Jr., editor of Worcester Magazine, had a hunch that the highly emotional event was well worth documenting, so he phoned his award-winning photographer Steven King and said, “I need you.” Tarentino’s body had been in Boston for an autopsy, and Bird said the motorcade on its way to the funeral home was met with an “amazing” reception. Then suddenly, outside the funeral home, King’s eyes caught a glimpse of something unforgettable: A little boy running up to a police officer and hugging him while the officer got down on a knee and hugged him back. Worcester Magazine/Steve King Photo King, of course, snapped a photo — and the image has been shared over and over, all across the country. The haunting question has been, “Who is this little boy?” Some have wondered if he’s Tarentino’s son. But Bird shared in Worcester Magazine the “gut-wrenching” story behind King’s photo. Turns out the boy, according to Chief Sluckis, is named Camden — and he’s the son of veteran Auburn police officer Keith Chipman. Chipman and his son were friends with Tarentino, and once Camden realized what had happened and why he was at the funeral home, he ran to his father and begged him, “Daddy, please don’t be a police officer anymore.” Read more stories from TheBlaze Trump Formally Clinches Republican Nomination for President See How Dem Congresswoman Reacts During House Hearing When Witness Offers Her Opinion on Transgender Debate ‘That’s Very Offensive’: Reporter Confronts Trump for Calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ — He Responds Like You’d Expect Washingtonian Editor: People Shouldn’t Say ‘Start a Family’ Because It’s Offensive Accusations of Pedophilia in Hollywood: Former Child Actor Corey Feldman Makes Shocking Revelation About Man Who Allegedly Molested Him Source

  13. Former Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) vowed Friday to make sure that the 2016 GOP platform will reflect “Judeo-Christian principles” by working to elect conservative delegates and to fight a proposed change to the platform by Republican nominee Donald Trump. During an interview with Oklahoma radio host Pat Campbell, the talker asked Cruz if he would pledge to fight Republicans at the party’s convention in Cleveland who want to “screw around with the party platform and remove the abortion plank, or alter it.” Andrew Burton/Getty Images “You have my word,” the senator replied. “One of the reasons that we are continuing to work to elect conservatives to be delegates, even though Donald has the delegates to get the nomination, we intend to do everything we can to fight for conservative principles to prevent Washington forces from watering down the platform.” “The platform is a manifestation of what we believe as a party, and I think it is important that it continue to reflect conservative values, free-market values, constitutional liberties, Judeo-Christian principles, the values that built this country, and that is exactly what I intend to fight for,” Cruz added. Trump said in April that he would “absolutely” change the Republican Party’s “Sanctity and Dignity of Human Life” plank to broaden its exceptions. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said shortly after that such changes are “up to the delegates at the convention.” (H/T Politico) — Follow Kate Scanlon (@kgscanlon) on Twitter Read more stories from TheBlaze Trump Formally Clinches Republican Nomination for President See How Dem Congresswoman Reacts During House Hearing When Witness Offers Her Opinion on Transgender Debate ‘That’s Very Offensive’: Reporter Confronts Trump for Calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ — He Responds Like You’d Expect Washingtonian Editor: People Shouldn’t Say ‘Start a Family’ Because It’s Offensive Accusations of Pedophilia in Hollywood: Former Child Actor Corey Feldman Makes Shocking Revelation About Man Who Allegedly Molested Him Source

  17. NEW YORK (AP) — Officials are reporting the first U.S. human case of bacteria resistant to an antibiotic used as a last resort drug. The 49-year-old woman has recovered. But officials fear that if the resistance spreads to other bacteria, the country may soon see germs impervious to all antibiotics. The woman had gone to a military clinic in Pennsylvania for a urinary tract infection. Tests found she had E. coli bacteria resistant to colistin, an antibiotic of last resort. She was successfully treated for the superbug with other antibiotics. Bacteria resistant to the colistin have been found in other countries but not in people in the U.S. The woman had not traveled recently outside the country. Military officials reported the case Wednesday. 22. An advertisement for a Chinese detergent brand is going viral — but not for any good reason. Qiaobi detergent released the ad, showing an Asian woman doing laundry when a black man, covered in paint, appears at the door and winks. He approaches the woman but when he gets close, the Asian woman shoves his entire body into the washer. Moments later, when the wash cycle is finished, an Asian man pops out of the machine. Various media outlets called out the detergent brand for its “racist” commercial, which is reportedly being run on television and in movie theaters in China, according to the Shanghaiist. It has also been viewed more than two million times on YouTube. As the Huffington Post pointed out, the ad is the same concept as another ad put out by an Italian detergent brand. In the Italian ad, however, an Italian man is shoved in the washer and replaced with a black man. Both the Chinese ad and the Italian ad even use the same music. It’s not clear when exactly the Italian ad was released, but the 40-second spot was uploaded to one YouTube channel in June 2007. The Italian ad was part of a series of television spots. Their themes? “Colored is better?” But the Chinese ad doesn’t seem to convey that message. “Thanks to traditional beauty standards valuing white skin, many Chinese people have a well-established phobia of dark skin which unfortunately also breeds racist attitudes towards people of African descent, who are viewed by some as ‘dirty’ simply because of their skin tone,” the Shanghaiist opined. The ad also garnered criticism online. Users took to the Chinese social media platform Welbo to sound off. “My god. Don’t Chinese marketing people get any education about race?” one user wrote, according to CNN. Another person, while replying to someone trying to defend the ad, stated, “If you don’t understand why it’s racist, congratulations, you’re a racist.” Qiaobi didn’t appear to have responded to the criticism as of Friday afternoon. We’ll be sure to let you know if and when Qiaobi does issue a statement. 23. When it comes to eschatology — the biblical study of the end times — there are some major theological differences among denominations and broader Christian cohorts. From debate over a theoretical tribulation period to battles over a so-called “rapture” event, Christian leaders’ views are surely shaped by their organizational affiliations. Consider that the research conducted for my new book, “The Armageddon Code: One Journalist’s Quest for End-Times Answers” found that 43 percent of self-identified evangelical pastors embrace a pre-tribulation rapture — the view that Christians will be taken up before the tribulation period that precedes Jesus’ second coming — compared to just 31 percent of Mainline preachers. Mainline pastors (36 percent) are also more likely than evangelicals (17 percent) to select “the concept of the rapture is not to be taken literally,” though it should be noted that it is difficult to pin down some of the differences between these two groups, as they overlap one another. Listen to author Jeff Kinley defend a pre-tribulation rapture below: There are certainly a number of differences between evangelicals and Mainline Protestants. As PBS once noted: “[Mainline Protestants] have a more modernist theology. So, for instance, they would read the Bible, not as the inerrant word of God, but as a historical document, which has God’s word in it and a lot of very important truths, but that needs to be interpreted in every age by individuals of that time and that place.” Moving behind the evangelical and Mainline paradigm, the research became even more intriguing when considering specific denominational affiliations, with Pentecostal preachers distinguishing themselves (73 percent) as the most likely to embrace a pre-tribulation rapture, with 61 percent of Baptists agreeing. Lutheran ministers, though, are the least likely to select this worldview, with just 1 percent of doing so. Showing just how strong a belief in a literal rapture is among some Christian leaders, consider that only 6 percent of Baptist pastors and less than one percent of Pentecostals embraced the idea that “the concept of the rapture is not to be taken literally,” compared to 60 percent of Lutherans, 48 percent of Methodists and 49 percent of Presbyterian/Reformed pastors. Similar findings unfolded among pastors when denominational affiliation was taken into account surrounding views on the millennium, as discussed in Revelation 20 in the Bible. The largest proportion of pastors overall — 48 percent — embraced premillennialism, with an addition 31 percent selecting amillennialism and 11 percent aligning themselves with postmillennialism. Before we dive deeper into denominational differences, though, let’s explore the choices that respondents were given, so that readers can better understand what differentiates these millennial world views: - There is no literal millennium, but Christ is currently reigning spiritually and in the hearts of Christians (often called amillenialism) - The millennium is not a literal 1,000 years, but an era in which the world will gradually grow more Christian and just ending with Christ’s second coming (often called postmillennialism) - The millennium will be a future literal 1,000-year period during which Jesus reigns on earth following Christ’s second coming (often called premillenialism) - None of these/Not sure While 57 percent of evangelical preachers selected premillennialism versus just 38 percent of Mainline ministers, Mainline pastors (38 percent) are more likely than evangelicals (24 percent) to embrace amillennialism. Anne Graham Lotz discusses her views on eschatology below: More specifically, those most likely to select premillennialism were Pentecostals (84 percent) and Baptists (75 percent) versus just 5 percent of Lutherans, 21 percent of Methodists and 14 percent of Presbyterian/Reformed. Lutherans, however, are most likely to embrace the amillennial perspective (71 percent) followed by ministers who are Presbyterian/Reformed (52 percent). Views on the possibility of a future antichrist were also diverse and seemingly dependent upon denominational worldview, with 83 percent of Pentecostals and 75 percent of Baptists saying that they believe “he is a figure who will arise sometime in the future.” This compares to just 7 percent of Lutherans, 29 percent of Methodists and 22 percent of Presbyterian/Reformed ministers. While only 2 percent of Pentecostals and 3 percent of Baptists said that they believe the antichrist is merely “a personification of evil,” 29 percent of Lutherans, 28 percent of Methodists and 31 percent of Presbyterian/Reformed pastors said the same. – Follow the author of this story on Twitter and Facebook and check out his new book “The Armageddon Code: One Journalist’s Quest for End-Times Answers”: Follow @BillyHallowell Read more stories from TheBlaze Trump Formally Clinches Republican Nomination for President See What Trump Did When He Was Reportedly Told He Didn’t Have Enough Time for the National Anthem At His Rally See How Dem Congresswoman Reacts During House Hearing When Witness Offers Her Opinion on Transgender Debate ‘That’s Very Offensive’: Reporter Confronts Trump for Calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Pocahontas’ — He Responds Like You’d Expect Washingtonian Editor: People Shouldn’t Say ‘Start a Family’ Because It’s Offensive Source
