  1. MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow argued Thursday night that a potential debate between Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders would be a major victory for the presumptive Republican nominee.

“Strategically, from Donald Trump’s perspective, this is a like a hat trick, and a grand slam and a slam dunk all in one,” Maddow said. “There’s no down side to Donald Trump doing this.”

The MSNBC host went on to suggest that, even — and maybe especially — if Sanders won the proposed matchup, things would only look better for Trump.

“The better Bernie Sanders looks in a debate with Donald Trump, the better it is in the long run for Donald Trump,” Maddow asserted. “Because that would only elevate Bernie Sanders’ standing in the ongoing Democratic primary — which is still ongoing.”

While Sanders has virtually no path to securing the Democratic nomination over rival Hillary Clinton, she said, Trump enters the debate with no risks, given the fact that he’s already surpassed the threshold of delegates necessary — 1,237 — to clinch the GOP nomination.

“If you elevate Bernie Sanders’ standing in that primary, which Bernie Sanders has no chance of winning,” Maddow said, “that still prolongs that already long and expensive primary. It further undermines Hillary Clinton’s standing as the Democratic likely nominee.”

Though she finds the prospect of such a debate “very strange,” she did admit that it is “all upside” for Trump.

However, Maddow said she does not understand why any Democrat would allow the real estate developer to play any part in their primary contest, comparing it to the prospect of a 2012 debate between President Barack Obama and then-Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.

“It would have been a hilarious, hilarious play in the other party’s primary,” Maddow said. “A giant, cross-party dirty trick.”

  7. Donald Trump urged Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to reconsider his decision not to run for reelection to the Senate in a late-night tweet Thursday, hours after the Republican lawmaker said he would “certainly” speak on behalf of the presumptive GOP nominee.

Trump wrote, “Poll data shows that Marco Rubio does by far the best in holding onto his Senate seat in Florida. Important to keep the MAJORITY. Run Marco!”

Rubio, who was a staunch critic of Trump before bowing out of the race for the White House, voiced a sharp turn in rhetoric, telling CNN host Jake Tapper Thursday that he plans to go to the GOP Convention in July, adding, “I want to be helpful. I don’t want to be harmful because I don’t want Hillary Clinton to be president.”

Trump then echoed that major turnaround. But the history between the two men is anything but friendly.

In one of the most reported moments of the primary contest, Trump mocked Rubio’s famous water bottle gaffe during a rally in Texas, sloshing around an open bottle of water, shouting, “It’s Rubio!”

During the heat of his battle against the billionaire businessman, Rubio sought to capitalize on the anti-Trump sentiment, even selling several products bearing the hashtag #NeverTrump.

And there was no love lost on Trump’s Twitter account, either, where he frequently suggested Rubio, who he nicknamed “Little Marco,” was a “lightweight” and part of the “establishment.”

All in all, this latest development from both camps seems to be an effort to bring the many sections of the fractured Republican Party together around the GOP nominee.

  9. Fox News host Greta Van Susteren was widely criticized Thursday night for her “Meet the Trumps” special which many likened to propaganda fit to air on a state-run television network.

The hour-long special, which featured interviews with several members of Trump’s family, included an opening sequence that drew scorn from Van Susteren’s peers in the press.

“A glimpse of what state media will look like after Glorious Leader Trump is victorious,” MSNBC host Chris Hayes tweeted.

“I agree it’s like something you might see on the state-owned TV station in a tiny country somewhere,” echoed senior Fortune writer Mathew Ingram.

“Kill me,” wrote BuzzFeed’s Andrew Kaczynski.

“Shout out to North Korea,” opined the Globe and Mail’s Andrew Woo.

“The worst sitcom in history or informercial posing as journalism? Maybe both?” asked Daily Caller contributor Derek Hunter.

  10. A newly-released study of the Department of Veterans Affairs revealed the agency devoted millions of dollars to lawyers and public relations officials, while spending only a fraction of its budget on new medical hires, as thousands awaited medical attention.

The study, which was performed by OpentheBooks.com, shows that between 2012 and 2015, only one in 11 new hires were “medical officers,” a revelation that is fueling criticism that the VA’s are about more than just resources.

“What’s clear is that money is not the issue – the culture is,” Concerned Veterans for America press secretary John Cooper told Fox News.

The government watchdog that published the study discovered that the VA added more than 39,000 new positions between 2012 and 2015 and only 3,591 of those new positions were medical officers — less than 10 percent of the new hires. And much of the money that could have gone to new doctors — including $99.1 billion in salaries and bonuses — went to employees outside the medical field.

Even more, the analysis showed the VA paid $1.7 million for surveys, $751.1 million for “household” and “office” furniture and $303 million on non-essential positions, such as painters, gardeners and interior designers. The group also discovered that 19 percent of employees were compensated more than $100,000, with the top salaries reaching $400,000.

“It’s pretty difficult to argue the VA is suffering from a lack of resources when it spends money like this,” Cooper said.

This study comes after VA Secretary Robert McDonald compared the long wait lines at hospitals to lines for rides at Disneyland, suggesting veterans’ satisfaction with their care, not their wait time, should be the focus.

Fox News host Neil Cavuto said the comments were “callous” and “stupid,” suggesting, “Last time I checked, you don’t die waiting on a line for Disney. You do die waiting for care.”
