  5. Brandon Webb, a former U.S. Navy SEAL and the CEO of Force12 Media told Entrepreneur in an interview Thursday that one piece of advice he received changed his outlook on business and helped him turn failure into success.

Webb, whose Force12 Media operates foreign policy news, military lifestyle and entertainment websites and publishes books on the same topics, said that failure can lead to success because “sometimes people have to learn the hard way.”

After he ended a 13-year career in the Navy, Webb said he started a company that turned out to be “a complete disaster.”

“A lesson learned, both in the SEAL teams and as an entrepreneur, is that failure is sometimes a critical component of success,” Webb told the magazine.

The vet said that one of the biggest lessons he learned from the failure of his first business is the necessity of “choosing your partners wisely”: “Oftentimes, what I see — and what happened in my case, too — is you have two very similar partners and there’s this struggle for control. There has to be one captain of the ship.”

Webb said one of the best pieces of advice he received is to look at business opportunities like a garden. If a “one-man gardener” is trying to “water” too many different projects, they might be “dead” when you return. “So I just said, you know what, I’m going to focus on one opportunity,” he added. “The moment I did that is the moment I started having success as an entrepreneur.”

  11. WASHINGTON (TheBlaze/AP) — Conservatives angered by the inclusion of LGBT protections in an otherwise routine spending bill scuttled the measure Thursday in a stark display of the potency of the issue suddenly prominent in the presidential race and responsible for a legal standoff between the Obama administration and several states.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) argued Democrats intended to “sabotage” the appropriations process by forcing an amendment into the bill.

The sweeping 305-112 vote to kill an energy spending measure imperils efforts by GOP leaders to pass any more of the 12 annual spending bills for the upcoming budget year.

The implosion came after Democrats managed late Wednesday to add an amendment protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people against discrimination by federal contractors. The provision, which passed on a 223-195 vote, was aimed aimed at upholding an Obama administration executive order.

That provision prompted more than half of House Republicans to vote against the bill’s passage on Thursday. The revolt followed a closed-door GOP meeting featuring complaints by GOP conservatives. Outside groups like Heritage Action intensified their opposition to the bill as well.

Meanwhile, Democrats overwhelmingly opposed the bill over a GOP provision they said defends North Carolina’s transgender bathroom law, which also takes away a variety of federal protections for LGBT people.

The Obama administration has filed suit against the law and has threatened to take away federal funding for the state, and Republicans muscled through a provision to ensure that federal dollars are not taken away.

The hostility from both tea party lawmakers and Democrats could scuttle the entire appropriations process, just as a controversy over the Confederate flag sank the process last year.

“House Republicans’ thirst to discriminate against the LGBT community is so strong that they are willing to vote down their own appropriations bill in order to prevent progress over bigotry,” said minority leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “In turning against a far-reaching funding bill simply because it affirms protections for LGBT Americans, Republicans have once again lain bare the depths of their bigotry.”

But it was Pelosi who led a charge by Democrats against a provision to protect North Carolina from retaliation by several federal agencies over the law requiring transgender people to use the bathroom of their original sex. That provision was approved late Wednesday on a 227-192 vote.

Moments after the bill failed, Ryan blamed the outcome on Democrats, even though a majority of Republicans voted against the bill. He also said it was also a result of the more open procedures he’s instituted in the House.

“Early on I stood up here … and said that some bills might fail because we’re not going to tightly control the process and predetermine the outcome of everything around here. We’ll, that’s what happened here today,” Ryan said.

“What we learned today is that the Democrats were not looking to advance an issue but to sabotage the appropriations process,” he said.

Ryan said the “sabotage” is made clear by the fact that the author of the LGBT amendment actually voted against the bill that contained his amendment.

    Watch Ryan’s remarks below:

Democrats had a host of other reasons why they opposed the bill, including a series of policy “riders” to roll back environmental regulations and provisions to undercut the administration’s nuclear deal with Iran.

Ryan vowed to revive the bill and the overall appropriations process. The same amendment about discrimination by federal contractors had failed when offered to another spending bill a week ago; GOP leaders warned at the time that its approval would have sunk that measure, which would fund veterans programs and military base construction.

The amendment to protect North Carolina, authored Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C., came in response to warnings from the Obama administration that it may take away federal money in response to the bathroom law.

“The president and his emissaries have stated … that funds should not be dispensed to North Carolina until North Carolina is coerced into complying with the legal beliefs of the president and his political views,” Pittenger said. “This is an egregious abuse of executive power.”

The North Carolina law was passed after the city of Charlotte passed an ordinance allowing transgender people to use restrooms of their chosen gender identity. The state law went further to take away federal protections for gays, putting the state at risk of losing a variety of federal funds.

  12. The Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Montana has adopted a transgender bathroom policy akin to North Carolina’s controversial bill — and the American Civil Liberties Union in the state is none too pleased, KRTV-TV reported.

The tribal executive board approved the policy Monday, the station said, which requires bathroom use to correspond to users’ birth genders rather than their gender identities.

Councilman Ed Bauer was recorded in the meeting minutes as saying, “What people do in their bedrooms is their business. How public bathrooms are used is [my] business,” KRTV reported.

Bauer added to the station that the policy reflects the tribe’s longtime stance on the issue — and despite President Barack Obama’s directive that all U.S. public schools allow students to use bathrooms that correspond to their gender identities.

“We disagreed with the president’s mandate,” Bauer told KTRV. “We don’t have trouble with it in regards to transgender or gay people. We just have a problem with male adults using bathrooms with young girls.”

That doesn’t sit well with ACLU Montana Executive Director Caitlin Borgmann.

“I’m very sad and disappointed that, even after seeing the developments with the North Carolina law, the tribe is still moving ahead with this,” she told the station, adding that the ACLU is against transgender discrimination and that the bathroom bill “promotes exclusion.”

But Bauer told the KTRV that he’s about more pressing issues.

“We have enough problems here with death and drugs, so maybe we’re just a little protective,” he told the station. “I’m more concerned with being physically correct and protecting our children than being politically correct.”

Bauer added that there are very few transgender people on the reservation, which has a population of 6,000, so the issue isn’t a huge one.

But Borgmann told KTRV she wants to meet with tribal leaders and convince them to go in a different direction.

“If it stands, we will think about our options,” she added.

According to its website, the “Fort Peck Reservation is home to two separate American Indian nations, each composed of numerous bands and divisions. The Sioux divisions of Sisseton, Wahpetons, the Yanktonais, and the Teton Hunkpapa are all represented. The Assiniboine bands of Canoe Paddler and Red Bottom are represented. The Reservation is located in the extreme northeast corner of Montana, on the north side of the Missouri River.”

  15. On the day he clinched the Republican presidential nomination, Donald Trump also sparred with a reporter over his use of the nickname “Pocahontas” to describe Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

When asked at a press conference Thursday in North Dakota about Warren’s most recent string of tweets criticizing him, Trump said, “Who? Pocahontas?”

Someone in the crowd asked whether the statement was offensive.

“Is it offensive? You tell me,” Trump replied.

“It’s very offensive,” Nicole Robertson, a reporter who is Native American, responded. “Sorry.”

Trump went on to bash Warren for failing to document her claim that she is Native American and criticized her for being unable to deliver for the people of Massachusetts in the Senate.

“She tweets a lot about me,” Trump said. “She is a senator that is highly overrated: She’s passed very little legislation; she has been a real disaster for a lot of people including the Democrats, who frankly can’t stand her, many of the Democrats. Just ask Hillary Clinton how she likes her.”

He added: “She’s a woman that’s been very ineffective, other than she’s got a big mouth.”
