  3. A father left paralyzed by a battle with cancer was determined not to let his diagnosis get in the way of his dream of walking his daughter down the aisle on her wedding day — so he used a robotic walking machine to make it happen, according to the U.K.’s Mirror.

Chris Palmer, 55, became wheelchair bound after he was diagnosed with cancer in 2012.

His doctors told him he would never walk again, but Palmer proved them wrong.

His daughter, Heather Halls, 28, found a company called Rex Bionics that invented an exo-skeletal suit designed to assist people who are disabled to walk. Halls asked the firm to loan her father the machine and teach her father how to use it for her wedding. They agreed, and with some practice, Palmer was able to use the suit to walk his daughter down the aisle and for his father-of-the-bride speech.

“It’s wonderful I can do this,” Palmer told the Mirror. “It’s fulfilling something that dads do. When I lay in the hospital after the operation, one of the first things I thought about was my daughter’s wedding and how I wasn’t going to be able to walk her down the aisle.”

Halls told the Mirror, “It is really overwhelming that my dad is able to walk me down the aisle.”

“There are a lot of people who are in my dad’s position that don’t know this is out there, and I want people to know if they have had an accident that is life-changing or have a disability, there are measures out there that would enable them to do things they might think they could never do,” she added. “I feel really proud of him that he’s come this far and am really grateful to everyone who has helped us along the way.”

  10. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas and 10 other states are suing the Obama administration over a new directive about transgender students in public schools.

The lawsuit announced Tuesday also includes Oklahoma, Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Maine, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah and Georgia. The challenge follows a federal directive to U.S. schools this month to let transgender students use the bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity.

Conservative states had vowed defiance since the Justice Department handed down the guidance. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch has said “there is no room in our schools for discrimination.”

The lawsuit accuses the Obama administration of “running roughshod over commonsense policies” that protect children. It asks a judge to declare the directive unlawful.

  14. BRILLION, Wis. (TheBlaze/AP) — A civil liberties group representing Muslim employees of a Wisconsin manufacturer has filed a religious discrimination complaint against the company for not allowing extra break time for prayer.

    Rob Stothard/Getty Images

    Rob Stothard/Getty Images

Ariens Co., a lawnmower and snow blower manufacturer, fired seven Muslim employees earlier this year for taking unscheduled breaks for prayer time. Another 14 employees resigned over the break policy.

The Brillion-based company moved to enforce an existing rule of two 10-minute breaks per work shift in January. The company initially allowed the Muslim employees to leave their work stations a third time to accommodate prayers but concluded that the extra breaks disrupted production.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, filed a federal discrimination complaint Tuesday. Ariens spokeswoman Ann Stilp says the company has 27 Muslim employees who are accommodated with prayer rooms.

Posting on its Facebook page Tuesday, CAIR accused Ariens Co of not providing its employees with “reasonable accommodations” for religious practices, which they are obligated to do by law, provided they do not result in a hardship for the employer.

  15. A school board candidate in Brevard County, Florida, was hauled away by police during a Tuesday meeting dealing with LGBT issues when he refused to cede his allotted speaking time.

    Florida Today

    Florida Today

Dean Paterakis was asked by Brevard School Board chairman Andy Ziegler to vacate the speaker’s podium for making so-called “inappropriate” remarks.

“That’s what happened…we have a teacher who put his phone up on the big screen and showed, what students say, was his erect penis,” Paterakis said.

“That’s enough, Dean,” Ziegler said. “It’s not appropriate.”

Several police officers quickly approached Paterakis to escort him out, but he continued to demand his right to “free speech.” Several people in attendance at the meeting groaned and shouted in support of Paterakis after he was silenced.

“We want to hear it!” one person yelled.

“Let him speak!” another person yelled.

Paterakis resisted officers’ attempts to remove him from the meeting and he was ultimately arrested and charged with disrupting a school function and resisting an officer without violence. He was released on a $750 bond.

Cpl. Dave Jacobs of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that the arrest was made after he “refused several lawful orders to leave the premises by uniformed deputies” and “continued verbally disrupting the function of the School Board meeting.”

Florida Today has more details on the LGBT policy being debated at the meeting:

School board members were voting on whether to schedule a public hearing about a proposed non-discrimination policy for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. That meeting included many outbursts from the audience, including yells, cheers, and jeers.

Before the LGBT policy can be voted on, a public hearing must be scheduled. Though a vote on whether to schedule a public hearing is typically a pro forma vote, this is the point in the political process when a previous version of the LGBT policy was tabled by the school board. Since February, the debate about an LGBT policy in Brevard Public Schools has been heated and emotional on both sides.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the board voted 3-2 in favor of scheduling a hearing on the LGBT policy.

Later in the meeting, Ziegler told residents that the school board would not allow “slanderous, abusive or profane speech” during the meeting. When people verbally objected to his comments, Ziegler threatened to clear the entire room.

“We can clear the room right now,” he said. “You all want to continue? We can continue our business meeting. It’s public, you don’t have to be in attendance.”

Watch the full exchange below via the Brevard Times:

  16. Donald Trump plans to attack Hillary Clinton over the decades-old Whitewater real estate scandal, according to an email his spokeswoman accidentally sent a reporter today.

Hope Hicks, Trump’s spokeswoman, had meant to send the email to Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo, but instead copied Politico’s Mark Caputo, Politico reported.

Michael Caputo had sent an email Wednesday morning asking a Republican National Committee researcher to “work up information on HRC/Whitewater as soon as possible.”

The requested information was “for immediate use and for the afternoon talking points process.”

The Whitewater scandal centered on Bill and Hillary Clinton’s real estate holdings through the Whitewater Development Corporation in the 1970s. When Bill Clinton became president in the 1990s, those holdings were investigated by both Congress and the Justice Department.

The Clintons were never prosecuted, but Bill Clinton’s successor as Arkansas governor was convicted of fraud for his participation in the scandal.

Hicks’ email also revealed something else: She told Michael Caputo not to directly contact the RNC researcher, Michael Abboud, with research requests until the researcher is expected to come over to the Trump campaign “full time.”

  17. A gun rights group has accused veteran television journalist Katie Couric of editing interview footage for her new documentary to intentionally make their organization appear foolish — and they have the audio recording to back it up.

Couric narrated and executive produced the new documentary, “Under the Gun,” which purports to present both sides of the debate over gun control. In the film, Couric interviews a group called the Virginia Citizens Defense League to get their perspective.

In the documentary, the VCDL representatives appear puzzled by one of Couric’s questions and hang their heads low, seemingly unable to answer.

“Let me ask you another question,” Couric says. “If there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?” Her interviewees respond with what seems to be a prolonged moment of silence.

But the full audio version of the interview that the group recorded, which it released to the Washington Free Beacon and the pro-gun website Ammoland, shows that the group did in fact answer the question right away and did so in great detail.

“If you’re a felon and you’ve done your time, you should have your rights,” one VCDL representative responds.

“Well the fact is, you do have statutes both at the federal and state level that prohibit classes of people from being in possession of firearms,” another man adds. “What we’re really asking about is a question of prior restraint, how can we prevent future crime by identifying bad guys before they do anything bad. And the simple answer is, you can’t.”

The group posted to Facebook Monday, accusing Couric of using “creative editing” to produce an “infomercial for gun control” under the guise of a documentary.

    Listen to the full recording:

  18. Starting at 6 a.m. April 21, a man has been standing outside Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, hoping for chance to try out for the team.

The man hoping to catch the eye of Patriots management and coaches is Abiola Aborishade. The former NCAA Division-III star receiver for the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth was a standout his senior year, leading the team in all-purpose yards and producing a highlight reel worth a look.

Fall 2014 was the last time Aborishade played football.

After graduating in 2015, Aborishade has been working full time in a non-football job to “pay the bills.” But playing pro football is his dream.

Several local sports fans have posted messages on Twitter, encouraging the Patriots to give Aborishade a look. One local sports radio show also prodded the Patriots online.

Is Aborishade good enough for the NFL? The undrafted prospect has been holding his daily vigil in hopes of getting a chance to show someone on the Patriots coaching staff that he has what it takes.

Watch the video profile of Abiola Aborishade produced by MassLive.com:

The New England Patriots have not responded to our request for comment on Aborishade’s chances for a try out.
