Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) let loose on Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid in a fiery speech from the Senate floor on Wednesday, strongly criticizing his actions and “cancerous leadership.”
“As a junior senator, I preside over the Senate,” Cotton said. “I usually do in the morning, which means I’m forced to listen to the bitter, vulgar, incoherent ramblings of the Minority Leader. Normally, like other Americans, I ignore them. I can’t ignore them today, however.”
Cotton made his displeasure with Reid’s decision to stall a vote on a defense bill that ultimately passed with a 98-0 vote. Reid accused Republicans of drafting the bill in the “dead of night,” leaving lawmakers with no time to read the actual bill.
“When was the last time the Minority Leader read a bill? It was probably an electricity bill,” Cotton joked.
The Republican senator also argued that the defense bill has been “public for weeks.”
“This coming from a man who drafted Obamacare in his office and rammed it through this Senate at midnight on Christmas Eve on a straight party-line vote,” Cotton said.
Cotton, a military veteran, also angrily questioned Reid’s insistence that his actions were based in his caring for U.S. troops.
“To say that he’s delaying this because he cares for the troops, a man who never served himself, a man who in April 2007 came to this very floor before the surge had even reached its peak and said the war was lost, when over 100 Americans were being killed in Iraq every month, when I was carrying their dead bodies off an airplane at Dover Air Force Base,” he added, calling Reid’s claim an “outrage.”
Reid’s only interest, Cotton said, is in saving his “sad, sorry legacy” in the Senate.

Tuesday on the Glenn Beck Radio Program, hosts Glenn Beck, Pat Gray and Stu Burguiere got into a heated debate over the meaning of the 1970s hit song, “Clair” by Gilbert O’Sullivan.
The argument emerged from a conversation during the show’s break in which Gray asserted that the song is about a child molester.
“Pat says it’s the dirtiest song of all time,” Beck said. Gray insisted that there are worse songs out there but that O’Sullivan’s “Clair” is “really bad,” claiming that it just went “over your head” in the ’70s.
To support his case, Gray read through the song’s lyrics line by line, pausing to reflect on a few questionable verses, including, “Words mean so little, when you look up and smile. I don’t care what people say to me, you’re more than a child, Oh, Clair.”
The song also mentions that, despite their “age difference,” “nothing means more” to the singer than to hear little Clair say, “I’m going to marry you. Will you marry me, Uncle Ray?”
Gray also noted that the song mentions “childhood drinking” before showing Beck the album cover and music video, which both feature O’Sullivan and Clair Mills, the daughter of producer Gordon Mills. The video features O’Sullivan and little Clair running around and jumping on a trampoline.
Though the video seems innocent enough, Gray argued that it’s not.
But Beck insisted that “children drink things other than alcohol” and that the only potentially questionable part of the song is the verse that refers to marriage.
“I think the whole song is creepy,” Gray said.
Listen to the conversation here and watch O’Sullivan’s music video to decide for yourself:

A lasting criticism of the “Fight for $15” movement to raise the federal minimum wage has been that such a radical jump could lead to a severe economic upset by creating widespread unemployment.
A former McDonald’s CEO warned that if the movement is successful in getting the minimum wage raised from $7.25 an hour to $15, robots and machines will gradually take over staff jobs because they’ll be cheaper than hiring humans.

Ed Rensi said that investing in expensive, high-tech robotics is a cheaper alternative for fast-food businesses like McDonald’s that employ minimum wage workers.
“I was at the National Restaurant Show yesterday, and if you look at the robotic devices that are coming into the restaurant industry, it’s cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who’s inefficient making $15 an hour bagging French fries,” Rensi told Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo Tuesday on “Mornings with Maria.” “It’s nonsense and it’s very destructive and it’s inflationary and it’s going to cause a job loss across this country like you’re not going to believe.”
Lynda Gratton, professor of management practice at London Business School, and futurologist David A. Smith recently conducted a study into the future of human employment, concluding that humans are becoming increasingly replaceable because robots are often better at performing certain tasks.
“Studies have suggested that a third of jobs in Europe will be replaced by technology over the next two decades,” Gratton told the Mirror.

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and other advocates of increasing the minimum wage by more than 100 percent have admitted that the pay increase might not “make sense” economically when it comes to helping workers, calling into question the sincerity of the “Fight for 15” movement.
“Economically, minimum wages may not make sense,” Brown told the Sacramento Bee last month before signing a $15 minimum wage into law for his state, following New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D). But, Brown added, it’s “not just an economic equation.”
“Morally and socially and politically, [minimum wages] make every sense because it binds the community together and makes sure that parents can take care of their kids in a much more satisfactory way,” he said.
But for Rensi, a flourishing economy demands “common sense” solutions from all industries.
“It’s not just going to be in the fast-food business,” he told Bartiromo.
Rensi explained that if companies can’t get employees to work for a “reasonable wage,” they will turn to machines to do the work: “It’s just common sense. It’s going to happen whether you like it or not. And the more you push this it’s going to happen faster.”

An atheist activist group has waged a discrimination complaint with the Wisconsin government against a Christian school that announced earlier this year that it reserves the right to punish students for transgender and homosexual behavior.
Freedom From Religion Foundation attorney Patrick Elliot filed the complaint with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction against St. John’s Lutheran Church and School in Baraboo, Wisconsin, arguing that the institution “has implemented policies that discriminate against students on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity,” according to the Christian Post.
The argument is that the school is illegally discriminating due to its acceptance of federal funding for various student assistance programs.
“As these students are unable to attend the school, they are unable to participate in free and reduced price lunch programs,” Elliot wrote in the official complaint, which was filed on May 6, going on to share the text of a letter that Principal Craig Breitkreutz recently wrote to parents.
A screen shot from the official complaint
Breitkreutz’s two-page letter back in February detailed some new policies that would be implemented at St. Johns Lutheran Church and School, with the principal proclaiming, “There are things that must be done at our school to make sure that things run well and to protect the truths of scripture we hold so dear.”
Among the new policies outlined was a request for students’ birth certificates when they register with the school, with Breitkreutz proclaiming that the institution plans to continue operating based on its sincerely held religious beliefs. That said, as a Title IX school that receives public money for lunches and bussing, he said that discriminating in the admissions processes is not permitted.
Still, the school is looking to operate with its religious laurels in mind.
“Although we do not have the right to refuse admittance to people choosing an outwardly sinful lifestule, we do maintain the right to discipline and dismiss students for these choices,” the letter read.
The text later continued, ”We must know the gender of your child. Although this last item should never be an issue, we must be aware to protect our religious freedom.”
A screen shot from the principal’s letter
As for Elliot’s complaint, a representative for St. John’s Lutheran Church and School told the Christian Post that the grievance holds no merit and that officials at the school are ”confident that the government will recognize, as it always has, the church’s constitutional right to teach and practice our beliefs without interference from the government.”
“The federal funds we receive are designed to help children and families, not fund and operate our school,” the emailed statement continued. “We will gladly cooperate with any investigation, and we want to continue to provide these government programs to our families.”
St. John’s Lutheran Church and School is affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, which holds a traditional view on gender and sexuality.

After standing trial four times for the murder of his estranged wife on the night of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a wealthy businessman was found not guilty Tuesday — and then he and his lawyer vowed to go after those who pursued him over the last 15 years, CBS News reported.
Calvin Harris was accused of killing 35-year-old Michele Harris, who disappeared the night of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Prosecutors said he killed her when she came home to their lakefront estate in Spencer, a town in central New York state.
Two previous guilty verdicts against Harris were overturned. A third trial last year ended in a mistrial. Harris’ fourth time in court — a non-jury trial — began in March.
Lawyers for Harris had filed a motion to stop the fourth trial, claiming double jeopardy, the Times-Union reported, which typically disallows acquitted individuals to stand trial for the same crime twice. But Harris had never been acquitted, the paper said.
That changed Tuesday after a Schoharie Supreme Court judge ruled Harris not guilty of second-degree murder following more than two days of arguments, CBS News said. Harris embraced his family after the verdict was read, WBNG-TV said. Harris and his four children have always declared his innocence.
Harris characterized his 15-year courtroom battle with authorities as a “horrible abuse of power,” CBS News said, adding that he and his lawyer, Bruce Barket, vowed to go after his pursuers.
“The people that hunted Cal Harris for 15 years — today, the hunted become the prey,” Barket said, CBS News reported. “This is not over by a long shot.”
A tearful Harris added that he had been “robbed of my right as a father” to raise his children, CBS News said: ”I’ve been ripped away from my kids three times now. That’s been hard.”
A babysitter found Michele Harris’ empty minivan at the end of the family’s driveway on the morning of Sept. 12, 2001, CBS News said, hours after she was last seen alive.
Prosecutors said Harris was killed while the couple’s four young kids were asleep upstairs in their home, CBS News reported, adding that the divorcing couple were still living under the same roof.
Michele Harris’ body has never been found and prosecutors have relied on a largely circumstantial case. No murder weapon was found, either, but authorities found small blood spatters in the house.
Defense lawyers said authorities overlooked possible suspects she met during the freewheeling life she led as her marriage broke up.
Tioga County District Attorney Kirk Martin prosecuted the case and said Harris is still considered a missing person and his office would investigate any credible leads regarding the location of her remains, CBS News said.
Calvin Harris told reporters there would be “no celebration in our house tonight,” CBS News reported, adding that he said: ”There are no winners in this case. Everybody loses.”
The Associated Press contributed to this story.
