A new study has found a shocking increase in the percentage of individuals in England and Wales who say that they have no religious affiliation, with that proportion jumping from 25 percent in 2011 to a stunning 48.5 percent in 2014.
The data, which came from an analysis of British Social Attitudes surveys that have been conducted each year since 1983, found that 43.8 percent of the population fell under the Christian umbrella in 2014, affiliating as Anglicans, Catholics or with other denominations.
Overall, there have been some major declines among various faith cohorts.
“Anglicans have suffered the biggest declines: from 44.5 percent in 1983 to 19.0 percent in 2014,” reads the new report titled, “Contemporary Catholicism in England and Wales.” “The Catholic population, however, has remained relatively steady throughout this period.”
Dr. Stephen Bullivant, a theology and ethics professor at St. Mary’s Catholic University in Twickenham, United Kingdom, who conducted the research concluded that the increase in “nones” — those who embrace no official religion — is “striking,” according to the Guardian.
“The striking thing is the clear sense of the growth of ‘no religion’ as a proportion of the population,” Bullivant told the outlet. “The main driver is people who were brought up with some religion now saying they have no religion. What we’re seeing is an acceleration in the numbers of people not only not practising their faith on a regular basis, but not even ticking the box.”
The reason for this latter sentiment isn’t immediately clear, as sociologists continue to explore the issue.
Bullivant implored churches to take the data “very seriously,” as he believes that it could help religious groups bridge divides.
Read the report in its entirety here.

Staff Sgt. John York had 10 days before his deployment. It would be the Marine’s third deployment, and the first since his 3-year-old son, Bryson, was born.
But before he left, York wanted to do something special to let his son know how much his father loves him. So he came up with a creative idea to use those 10 days to celebrate every major holiday with Bryson.
“He just came home from work and said, ‘I have an idea of what I want to do when I have the 10 days of pre-deployment leave. I really want to do all the holidays, all his favorite holidays that I’m going to miss,’” York’s wife, Priscilla, told ABC News.
First, John took Bryson trick or treating.
“He went to every neighbor’s house on the block and he had candy that he handed to them so they’d be ready when Bryson rang the doorbell,” Priscilla said of John’s thoughtful plan. “He brought candy to each of their houses if they were home. The neighbors were so great about it.”
Bryson also got to experience an early Christmas and birthday with his dad.
But little did John know that while he was busy making memories with his son, his wife had another special holiday surprise in store for him.
In order to show John how much she and Bryson appreciated him for “doing the dad thing right,” Priscilla secretly recorded all of the father-son festivities and compiled them into a single video. The video was to be an early Father’s Day present for the Marine dad.
“He didn’t know I was making the video, and when I showed it to him I think he watched it 1,000 times over and over and over again,” Priscilla told. “I had to portray it the way it was meant to be felt. The video made his vision come to life in a way he didn’t expect. I think the whole process meant more to him knowing that it was recorded like that.”
Priscilla shared that her husband and son have a bond that she’d “never be able to match.”
“He just adores him. He adores that man,” she said of Bryson.
As for John, Priscilla said, “He is the most incredible dad and husband I’ve ever met. He helps me out so much. He takes over everything when he comes home.”
Watch the heartwarming footage of John and Bryson:

Speaking in Washington, D.C., Tuesday night, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) attacked presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for comments he made about the real estate bubble in 2006.
“What kind of a man roots for people to get thrown out of their house?” Warren asked the audience, referring to a statement the real estate magnate made that is now the centerpiece of an ad released Tuesday by the Clinton campaign.
On Tuesday, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” led with the story of the Clinton ad and Warren’s impassioned speech admonishing Trump for the 10-year-old comment.
After playing a clip from Warren’s speech, co-host Mika Brzezinski sent a message to the Clinton campaign team, “Please give her (Warren) what she wants.”
Joe Scarborough responded to Brzezinski by reminding his partner of the Massachusetts senator’s history of purchasing foreclosed homes and flipping them for a big profit, which was a reported by National Review May 27, 2015.
Watch the exchange:
For a few minutes, Scarborough, Brzezinski and the “Morning Joe” panel discussed Warren’s strength as a surrogate and “wing man” for Hillary Clinton.
Brzezinski tried to move the discussion a different direction. But, not before she told Scarborough, “You need to stop making fun of me about Elizabeth Warren,” Brzezinski said.
