Two Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputies were injured as they were thrown onto a busy freeway after a woman decided to drive away after being pulled over — and the harrowing moment was caught on camera. The two officers initially pulled the woman over for speeding and found that she had a suspended license, WDJT-TV reported. The officers proceeded to call for a tow truck, and once it arrived, the woman put her car in reverse and drove off at a high speed. As seen in the video captured by the deputies’ dash cam, the officers narrowly avoided being struck by an oncoming truck. Both officers sustained non-life threatening injuries. A passenger who had been in the woman’s car, who was outside of the vehicle at the time the woman decided to drive away, also sustained non-life threatening injuries during the incident. Former Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields was hired by the Huffington Post months after she broke with the conservative outlet on bitter terms. Fields resigned from Breitbart in March, claiming that her former employer refused to defend her after she claimed to have been assaulted by Donald Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski during a news conference. CNN Money was first to announce the news Sunday night. “After the tumultuous events of the last few months, I am ready to get back to writing and reporting on what is without question the most bizarrely fascinating presidential race of my lifetime (and, perhaps, any lifetime),” Fields told CNN in a statement. “ beyond excited to join one of the biggest names in political journalism.” After months of being the subject of much political news coverage, Fields will resume her role as a reporter Monday. But it’s not likely to be a quiet transition. Fields’ name has been synonymous with controversy since she first made the allegations against Lewandowski. The reporter has described the incident as “the worst experience” she’s endured following the death of her father. In a statement to BuzzFeed News announcing her departure from Breitbart, Fields wrote, “I do not believe Breitbart News has adequately stood by me during the events of the past week and because of that I believe it is now best for us to part ways.” Former Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro also announced his resignation in a separate, strongly worded statement, accusing Breitbart News for defending Trump instead of taking Fields’ claims seriously. Breitbart spokesman Kurt Bardella also left the outlet amid the ordeal and later appeared on CNN to accuse the conservative website of lying about what happened. Though the charges against Lewandowski have been dropped, Fields has remained adamant in her assertions that the Trump campaign made a deliberate attempt to sabotage her journalistic credibility. BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore officer was acquitted Monday of assault and other charges in the arrest of Freddie Gray, dealing prosecutors a significant blow in their attempt to hold police accountable for the young black man’s death from injuries he suffered in the back of a police van. The assault charge carried a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and reckless endangerment carried a punishment of up to five years. Gray died April 19, 2015, a week after his neck was broken in the back of a police transport van while he was handcuffed and shackled but left unrestrained by a seat belt. Nero was one of six officers charged in the case. He waived his right to a jury trial, opting instead to argue his case before Circuit Judge Barry Williams. Officer William Porter’s manslaughter trial ended in a hung jury in December. Gray’s death set off more than a week of protests followed by looting, rioting and arson that prompted a citywide curfew. His name became a rallying cry in the growing national conversation about the treatment of black men by police officers. Prosecutors said Nero unlawfully detained Gray and acted callously when he made a decision not to buckle Gray into a seat belt when he was loaded into the back of a transport vehicle. Nero’s attorney argues that his client didn’t arrest Gray and that it is the police van driver’s responsibility to buckle in detainees. The defense argued that the officers who responded that day acted responsibly, and called witnesses to bolster their argument that any reasonable officer in Nero’s position would have made the same decisions. The defense also sought to convince the judge that the department’s order requiring that all inmates be strapped in is more suggestion than rule because officers are expected to act with discretion based on the circumstances of each situation. The other officers are set to each have separate trials over the summer and into the fall. Nero is white and Porter is black. Two of the other officers charged in the case are white and two are black. NEW YORK — Chirlane McCray, wife of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, said she was truly shocked when she learned that her own daughter, someone she described as a “high-achiever,” suffered from depression, anxiety and an addiction. Speaking from the pulpit of Riverside Church near Columbia University, the first lady of New York City described her desire to love her daughter, Chiara de Blasio, “into wellness.” As a mother, McCray said she researched ways to help her daughter as she struggled to learn more about cognitive behavioral therapy and just who she could trust to have her daughter’s best interests at heart. In what was deemed the “Weekend of Faith for Mental Health,” she and other city officials took the city’s message to a few dozen of the 1,000 participating churches, including a Jewish center in Brooklyn, a mosque in Manhattan and a Baptist church in Queens. During the development of ThriveNYC, the de Blasio administration consulted with several clergy members, a source in the mayor’s office told TheBlaze. Those clergy members expressed the desire for training on how better to assist their congregations when it comes to mental health issues — a service that will be provided through ThriveNYC. “This idea really came out of our conversations with clergy,” a source told TheBlaze. “They are hungry for opportunities to spotlight mental health and break down stigma around mental illness because they recognize it’s a problem in their communities.” While at the progressive Riverside Church Sunday morning, McCray implored the church leaders to host these free first aid mental health classes, which received a thumbs up from Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, the church’s senior minister, seated behind McCray’s podium. “I believe there’s no better place to have that conversation than right here in this place of solace, right here in this place of good will, this place of peace, and there is no better time to have this conversation than now,” McCray said Sunday morning. Clergy who took part in the weekend event were provided with a resource kit, complete with talking points regarding mental health issues. McCray also advocated for the congregation at Riverside Church to reach out to their elected officials, including New York Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gilibrand, to express their support for legislation that would help those addicted to opioids as well as easily provide mental health resources to those who need it. “I hope you will join us in urging Congress to make mental health a priority,” she said. Besides providing tools and resources for clergy in order to provide for their congregations, ThriveNYC will also screen all pregnant women and new mothers for postpartum depression. “Too many women are not able to function well at during what is supposed to be one of life’s most joyous moments,” McCray announced, adding that approximately one in 10 women in New York suffer from it. “So in partnership with our medical community, we’re going to talk to every pregnant woman and new mother, and if they need help, we will connect them to appropriate care.” The city also plans to launch NYC Support in the fall as a “single access point” for New Yorkers who wish to connect with any kind of mental health service with the help of real people who will also follow up. When filmmaker, writer and former pastor Elijah Stephens set out to try and “bridge the gap between the scientific and the miraculous” he said that he did so with an essential guiding principle in mind: “Let the truth go wherever it leads.” Considering his Christian worldview, Stephens — who is currently working on an untitled documentary about miracles — said that he obviously went into the project with a bias, but that he decided to objectively explore claims of supernatural healing by putting stringent rules and regulations into practice. “If God’s real and doing stuff today I want to know about it … I wanted to find objective evidence,” the filmmaker recently told The Church Boys podcast. “You can claim someone’s been healed, but what do the medical records say — and would a doctor really validate it?” He continued, “I wanted to go down that path and see — ‘Is there anything at the end of the rabbit hole?’” Stephens, who was unsure of what he would find in terms of medically documented evidence, said that he came away from the project — for which filming is nearing complete after he raised $132,500 via crowdfunding — observing two key dynamics. First, he felt as though there were some cases in which people would likely not have claimed that the miraculous was afoot if they knew just a little more about medical issues and science. That said, there were other cases that he encountered in which scientists and doctors did not have viable explanations, leading one to conclude that a miracle might have been at play. “Science can’t talk about God, but it can say, ‘This is our limits,’” Stephens said, explaining that he encountered some truly compelling stories during his filmmaking journey. One such story involved an atheist who had stage four cancer and was “on hospice and about to die.” When the man went to see his children for the last time, they begged him to go to their church and receive prayer. Seeing how much it would mean to them, the man obliged and, to his surprise, was reportedly healed. Stephens, who was clearly moved by the story, decided not to include it in the film, though, as he said that there was an important caveat that prevented the scenario from being a definitive miracle. “Although I think that case is a miracle, 1 in 100,000 cases of cancer have some type of spontaneous remission that we don’t know how to explain, so we’ve got to make the cut there,” he said, proving just how strict his criteria are for labeling incidents miraculous. The filmmaker also discussed the profound impact he saw healings have over the faithful, saying that most of the individuals he encountered began “praying for the sick like crazy” and got involved in related ministries after their own healings unfolded. VIENNA (AP) — Austria’s interior minister has announced that a left-leaning candidate has narrowly won presidential elections over an anti-immigrant Euroskeptic politician. The results ease immediate establishment party fears that the country could lurch to the right. Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka said Alexander Van der Bellen collected 40.3 percent of the votes compared to 49.7 percent for Norbert Hofer of the right-wing Freedom Party. The story of Belkhiri “trolling” the haters was picked up by many outlets. ChristianToday said the protest “backfired” due to the her presence. Mashable noted Belkhiri’s “defiant selfies,”Huffington Post UK described her actions in the face of “hostility,” and the BBC highlighted her “cheeky selfie.” “This wasn’t a protest at all, this was just to share joy and peace,” the 22-year-old told the BBC in an email, adding that she wanted “to show that things can be different.
