LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bernie Sanders predicted Monday that the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia could be “messy” as he pushed the party to adopt his progressive agenda, but added: “Democracy is not always nice and quiet and gentle.”
The Democratic presidential candidate said in an interview with The Associated Press that his supporters hoped to see a platform at the July convention that reflects the needs of working families, the poor and young people as opposed to one that represents Wall Street and corporate America.

The Vermont senator said he will “condemn any and all forms of violence” but his campaign was bringing in newcomers to the process and first-time attendees of political conventions. He said the Democratic party could choose to be more inclusive.
“I think if they make the right choice and open the doors to working class people and young people and create the kind of dynamism that the Democratic party needs, it’s going to be messy,” Sanders said. “Democracy is not always nice and quiet and gentle but that is where the Democratic party should go.”
Asked if the convention could be messy, Sanders said, “So what! Democracy is messy. Everyday my life is messy. But if you want everything to be quiet and orderly and allow, you know, just things to proceed without vigorous debate, that is not what democracy is about.”
Sanders is vying for support ahead of California’s June 7 primary, a day that also includes contests in New Jersey and four other states. Rival Hillary Clinton has 271 more pledged delegates than Sanders and is just 90 delegates shy of clinching the nomination when the total includes superdelegates, the party officials and elected leaders who can support the candidate of their choice.
Sanders said he had a “shot” at winning the June 7 California primary against Hillary Clinton and said given his deficit among delegates it was “imperative” that he perform well.
“What happens if I win a major victory in California? Will people say, ‘Oh we’re really enthusiastic about Hillary Clinton despite the fact that Bernie Sanders has now won whatever it may be, 25 states, half the states?’” he said adding that if that happens, superdelegates “may rethink that. That is why you want the process to play out.”
The senator spoke after the Democratic National Committee announced a 15-member platform drafting committee, which write the first draft of platform and will include allies of both candidates.
Sanders said the drafting of the platform would be an “excellent time to educate the American people. There are two sides to every issue and I’m sure that Secretary Clinton will have very vigorous proponents of her point of view as we will have.”

Facebook said in a letter to the U.S. Senate Monday that its investigation into anonymous allegations of political bias had “revealed no systematic political bias,” but added that he social media platform would nevertheless take action to “further protect” the Trending Topics feature from “potential misuse.”
The letter from Facebook attorney Colin Stretch to Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) came after the South Dakota senator requested the social media giant answer questions over allegations the website had worked to suppress conservative news.

Facebook, which has adamantly denied such claims, disclosed point-by-point findings of its investigation and informed the senator that it could not find evidence of any systemic bias. Nevertheless, the company said it would make certain changes.
“While our investigation revealed no systematic political bias, we are keenly aware of the responsibility that we have to our community of users and the high level of public interest in our products,” Stretch wrote. “Our goal is to create a community that bridges divides, gives all people a voice, and fosters the free flow of ideas and culture.”
“To achieve that objective, Facebook must be a platform that is open to all groups and individuals, and anything that limits engagement by particular groups—or even is perceived to limit engagement by particular groups—represents a shortcoming,” he added. “Thus, as part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards and improving our products, we are instituting changes to further protect the Trending Topics feature from potential misuse or the effects of unintentional political bias.”
Facebook said it would “eliminate our reliance on external websites and news outlets to identify, validate, or assess the importance of trending topics.”
“This means that we will discontinue use of the top-10 list of news outlets, the Media 1K list, and the RSS feed,” Stretch wrote.
The social media giant added that it had updated terminology in its guidelines and planned to “institute additional controls and oversight” on the Trending Topics team.
The letter to Thune came one week after Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with more than a dozen conservative thought leaders at the company’s Menlo Park headquarters.

Days after Bernie Sanders agreed to participate in a Fox News debate, Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton declined the invitation.
“We have declined Fox News’ invitation to participate in a debate in California,” Clinton spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri said in a statement. “As we have said previously, we plan to compete hard in the remaining primary states, particularly California, while turning our attention to the threat a Donald Trump presidency poses.”

Sanders tentatively agreed last week to the Fox News forum, which was expected to take place this month in California, just days ahead of the Golden State’s looming June 7 primary. Both the Sanders and Clinton campaigns agreed in February to four more debates, but only three have taken place.
“We believe that Hillary Clinton’s time is best spent campaigning and meeting directly with voters across California and preparing for a general election campaign that will ensure the White House remains in Democratic hands,” Palmieri continued.
Sanders has been pushing for Clinton to participate in one final debate. However, given Clinton’s extreme likelihood of sealing up the Democratic nomination, she has little motivation to appease her opponent’s request.

The FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department’s integrity unit are currently investigating Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe, CNN reported Monday.
The investigation, which has been ongoing for at least a year, centers on whether or not donations to his 2013 gubernatorial campaign violate the law, officials said. The governor was not notified by investigators about the FBI’s probe.

“The Governor will certainly cooperate with the government if he is contacted about it,” McAuliffe campaign attorney Marc Elias told CNN.
A key part of the investigation involves the fact that McAuliffe served on the board of the Clinton Global Initiative, the fundraising foundation established by former President Bill Clinton and likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Additionally, McAuliffe, chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2000 to 2005, co-chaired Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.
Records reveal more than 100 donors contributed to both the foundation and McAuliffe’s campaign. Investigators are looking into those overlaps, paying special attention to contributions from Wang Wenliang, a Chinese politician who donated $120,000 to McAuliffe’s campaign.
Wenliang was previously delegate to China’s National People’s Congress, the country’s ceremonial legislature.
“Neither the Governor nor his former campaign has knowledge of this matter, but as reported, contributions to the campaign from [Wenliang] were completely lawful,” Elias insisted.
Wenliang has also donated $2 million to the Clinton foundation. He has been generous in his contributions, making donations to New York University, Harvard and environmental issues in Florida, too.
Election contributions from foreign nationals is federally prohibited, but Wenliang’s spokeswoman said he holds permanent U.S. resident status, making him a U.S. person under election law and eligible to donate to the Virginia governor’s campaign.
Neither Wenliang nor the companies he used to make his donations have been contacted by the FBI, according to his spokeswoman.
McAuliffe is the second consecutive Virginia governor to be investigation by the Justice Department and the FBI. Former Gov. Bob McDonnell was investigated in 2014 and subsequently convicted of corruption charges related to $175,000 in loans and gifts he received from a friend and donor.
Officials confirmed the investigations remains active and ongoing.

In a short new ad released Monday, presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump went after his likely Democratic counterpart by attacking her husband.
It’s only 20 seconds long and lacks color, but the ad, posted to the social media-savvy candidate’s Instagram account, includes the voices of multiple women seemingly accusing former President Bill Clinton of sexual abuse. Among the voices included in the ad is that of Juanita Brodderick, who alleged in 1999 that Clinton raped her. More recently, she has accused Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton of attempting to “silence” her.
Politico identified another voice in the ad as Kathleen Willey, who accussed Bill Clinton of sexually assaulting her in 1993.
The ad concludes with a soundbite of Hillary Clinton’s harsh laugh and is captioned, “Is Hillary really protecting women?”
This isn’t the first time Trump has gone after the Clinton campaign by using the sexual assault allegations that shroud Hillary Clinton’s husband. He has often criticized the Democratic front-runner for “going after” and “destroying the lives” of the women allegedly involved with her husband.
“She was an unbelievably nasty, mean enabler, and what she did to a lot of those women is disgraceful,” Trump said at one campaign event.
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity last week, Trump referred to Bill Clinton’s alleged transgressions against women as “rape.”
While Bill Clinton has obviously never been found guilty of rape, are the sordid allegations of his sexual past fair game in a heated political contest that involves his wife?
“Sexual assault is a violent crime that should be taken seriously,” Meaghan Ybos, founder of the People for the Enforcement of Rape Laws, a Memphis-based nonprofit advocacy group that organizes with victims of sexual violence and monitors law enforcement’s response, told TheBlaze Monday.
“Allegations of violent crime should be fair game in any political race,” she added.
And as Ybos noted, Trump isn’t the first candidate to bring up sexual assault — including this election cycle.
A Democratic contender for district attorney in Philadelphia attacked the Republican incumbent for not charging Bill Cosby in a 2005 sexual assault allegation. And in Los Angeles County in 2013, a city council member publicly came forward about her own childhood sexual abuse after she was accused by her challenger of not doing enough to protect students from several teacher sex abuse cases while she was a school board member.
Hillary Clinton also raised the issue of campus sexual assault with a campaign ad in November in which she stated, “Every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be heard, believed and supported.”
“If nothing else, Clinton’s campaign video opened the door for her opponents to raise allegations like Trump’s video raises,” Ybos said.
And Karin Roland, the chief campaigns officer at UltraViolet Action, a women’s advocacy organization, was quick to bring up Trump’s own past with sexual assault allegations as she slammed the media for covering his new ad.
“Donald Trump has a pattern of abusing and sexually assaulting women — whether they are his employees, pageant winners or even his wife,” Roland said in a statement Monday afternoon. “It is shameful that the media continues to fail the general public by not questioning Trump directly on the allegations against him. He is on TV every day, yet never gets asked about this.”
“Voters across the country spend their time watching, observing and digesting the media’s messages every day,” Roland also said. “The media’s apparent inability to focus on the real issues at hand is appalling, flat out unacceptable and only perpetuates a culture of violence against women. The media needs to stop giving Donald Trump a free pass and hold Trump accountable for his dangerous pattern of sexual attacks against women.”

As Roland pointed out, Trump, too, has been accused of sexual assault. During a divorce deposition, Trump’s ex-wife Ivana described an altercation between her and her former husband in 1989 as a “rape” and contended that she “felt violated.” As the Daily Beast reported last July, she has since walked back that accusation.
Michael Cohen, special counsel at The Trump Organization, received harsh criticism after the Daily Beast reported on the incident and included a quote from him in which he argued “that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse.”
Trump was also sued by Jill Harth for $125 million in 1997 when she alleged that the Manhattan businessman sexually abused her in multiple ways, including “groping” her on several occasions, “forcibly” moving her to a bedroom for sex and propositioning her for sex multiple times. Harth eventually withdrew her lawsuit and told LawNewz.com that while she was “pressured” to file the suit, her allegations against Trump were “twisted and embellished.”
Multiple spokespeople for UltraViolet Action did not respond to a request for comment from TheBlaze on if allegations of sexual assault are fair game in politics.
Without commenting on Trump’s specific ad, Lisae Jordan, executive director of the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault, told TheBlaze that “there are going to be a range of responses — from feeling validated that people are concerned about the issue of sexual assault to triggering” as sexual assault survivors see any kind of political ad that includes sexual assault issues.
“I think it’s important that politicians talk about the policy in regards to sexual violence, laws that affect sexual assault survivors and the horrible responses to sexual assault survivors,” she continued, adding that as sexual assault continues to be one of the most underreported crimes in the U.S., victim-blaming can still occur — even incidentally.
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center declined to comment on Trump’s specific ad as well but encouraged every presidential candidate to release his or her plans to “tackle this critical issue.”
“As with all challenging subjects, exposure and conversation about sexual violence helps drive not only awareness, but action and change,” Laura Palumbo, communications director for NSVRC, said in a statement to TheBlaze. “That being said, as we are in the midst of probably the most high-profile presidential election in recent memory, candidates have a real opportunity and responsibility to help support survivors and further the prevention movement in a constructive way.”
Approximately one in every six women is a victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime, the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network has found. Approximately one in 33 men is a victim of an attempted or completed rape, as well.
