CINCINNATI (AP) — Police say a young child fell into the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and has been taken to the hospital.

Cincinnati Police Lt. Steve Saunders says the child that fell on Saturday afternoon is about 3 years old and isn’t believed to have life-threatening injuries. Saunders says zookeepers reportedly used a tranquilizer on a gorilla as the child was rescued.

Zoo spokeswoman Michelle Curley says officials will provide an update after gathering details from zoo staff and security.

Saunders says the child was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. A hospital spokesman said he had no information to release. Authorities haven’t released the child’s name.

The incident was reported around 4 p.m. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the area around the gorilla exhibit was closed off Saturday afternoon.
