Mervin Alva Johns, of Atascadero, passed away on June 28, 2016, at 88 years old. Mervin who was known to most as “Al” was born in Oklahoma and grew up in Bakersfield. In his early 20’s he moved to Brooklyn, NY, to volunteer at the world headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses and spent 6 years in New York before returning to Los Angeles where he married Norma Robinson in 1960. Al and Norma had three children, Jennifer Jean Johns, Jeffrey Jerome Johns and Julie Janette Johns and one grandson Matthew Jordan Johns.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandson and brother Bob and Shirley Johns and nieces.

Al owned a construction business, building houses in Los Angeles and Atascadero for a number of years, eventually opening a flooring store which his son Jeff runs to this day.

A passionate gardener, fisherman and avid reader, Al could often be found in his yard, where he planted hundreds of trees, in his vineyard or over at the coast fishing with friends.

Al was a devoted Jehovah’s Witness with a great love of life and strong belief in the Bible’s promise of a future time when death, pain, and tears will be no more. — Revelation 21:3, 4.”
