A situation in Lexington leads to a major traffic back up on New Circle Road. One man is dead, but investigators say his two young children are alive thanks to bystanders.

It all started when two concerned citizens noticed a man at the bus stop on Lima Drive and Georgetown Road.

Witnesses say man was in his underwear and had a toddler and an infant with him. The strangers determined the man was not in the right state of mind, and were able to take the children.

Witnesses say the man then walked to the Georgetown Road overpass and jumped. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators say the citizens who confronted the man may have saved both children's lives.

"We're fortunate but, the children are extremely fortunate. Thank God there are people in our society that will step up when they see something like that and protect children from being harmed," said Lexington Police Lt. Andrew Daugherty.

Westbound traffic on New Circle Road near the Georgetown overpass was completely shut down as first responders worked to clear the scene. The coroner says the man who had jumped off of the overpass was 29 years old and had been diagnosed with a mental health disorder.
