September is National Preparedness Month

Recommended Posts

Disasters don’t always occur when we are together with our family and friends, and so it’s important to take time now to plan what you will do in an emergency.  It only takes a few minutes to talk through the greatest risks that can affect where you live, work or go to school.

This September and throughout the year here are few actions you can take to get started:

Family making a communication plan

Watch "Don't Wait" Public Service Announcement

By having a conversation or making a plan, families can have more confidence and be better prepared when the next event happens.

October is preparedness month and the month where we participate along with 16 million others in the Great ShakeOut.  The Great ShakeOut is an international earthquake drill that will be conducted on October 20, 2016 at 10:20 a.m.

Below you will find links to sites that provide resources to help you and your family be prepared for any type of event.

Ready.gov is where you can sign up for the FEMA app and receive alerts for specific locations from the National Weather Service.  There is also information on preparing for floods and fire prevention.

The Washington State Emergency Management Division has a program called “Prepare in a Year” that provides checklists for disaster supplies kits and information on how to protect your home.

Take Winter by Storm is another great resource to help prepare for the types of winter storms we have in the Great Northwest.

Hope everyone has a safe and wonderful fall!
