Born in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, he was one of 10 children of the late George and Sedonia Matthews. He was educated in New Orleans and later moved to New York City, New York, where he held various jobs during his lifetime. He preached to everyone within earshot about his love of God Jehovah.

Surviving him are his wife, Inel Rachel Matthews; his son, Michael (Joy) Matthews; three daughters, Veda Thomas, Marilyn and Evette Matthews; three stepdaughters, Marlo, Monique and Tabitha; 12 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2280 Thomas Sumter Highway, U.S. 521 North, Sumter.

Services directed by the management and staff of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.
