El Ejército surcoreano rechaza la objeción a la 'mili' por la amenaza de Corea del Norte

El Ejército surcoreano ha expresado este miércoles su rechazo a las demandas de alternativas por objeción de conciencia al servicio militar ante la "amenaza" de Corea del Norte. El Ejército considera que podría utilizarse fraudulentamente esta vía para evitar el servicio militar.

"Es demasiado pronto para considerar una alternativa al servicio (militar) debido a la falta de consenso en el pueblo surcoreano. Corea del Sur y Corea del Norte están técnicamente en guerra desde la Guerra de Corea de 1950-53, que terminó con un alto el fuego, no con un tratado de paz", ha señalado un portavoz del Ministerio de Defensa surcoreano, según recoge la agencia de noticias surcoreana Yonhap.

El martes, un tribunal de apelaciones de la ciudad de Gwangju (suroeste) revocó las condenas de 18 meses de cárcel impuestas por un tribunal de menor rango a dos testigos de Jehová. El tribunal se ha apoyado en la Constitución, que incluye el respeto a la libertad religiosa y de conciencia individual. Los jueces consideran que el ejercicio de estos derechos constitucionales no pueden conllevar un castigo penal.

El Ministerio de Defensa ha anunciado que realizará una consulta el año que viene para explorar alternativas al servicio militar a la que puedan acogerse los objetores de conciencia.

Desde el fin de la guerra, hace más de seis décadas, todos los hombres de entre 18 y 35 años sin taras físicas están obligados a un servicio militar de unos dos años. Miles de objetores de conciencia, la mayoría testigos de Jehová, han sido juzgados por negarse a cumplir con la 'mili'. En los últimos 60 años se calcula que unos 12.000 testigos de Jehová surcoreanos han ido a prisión por su objeción de conciencia.
