Oct. 19, 1934 - Nov. 25, 2016

John F. Fix, who started with The Buffalo News as a paperboy and retired as a district circulation manager, died Nov. 25 in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a four-month illness. He was 82.

Mr. Fix, a Town of Tonawanda resident, was born in Buffalo, joined what was then The Buffalo Evening News as a paperboy at age 13, the year after his father died, to help earn money for the family.

In 1952, when he graduated from the former Pine Hill High School in Buffalo, he gave up his paper route on his 18th birthday. He then joined The News Circulation Department full-time as a hopper, who hopped on and off trucks delivering bundles of newspapers.

He later became a truck driver, then part of the city wholesale distributors, and finally a district manager, retiring in 1995.

Mr. Fix picked up truck-driving experience during a four-year stint in the Army in the mid 1950s. He was sent to Illinois, where he was part of a detail whose members drove trucks on various road surfaces to determine which type of pavement would be best for the Interstate Highway System, then being planned.

He was an avid fisherman, and for several years made two fishing trips to Canada each year. He also enjoyed oil painting, especially landscapes. Mr. Fix was a 46-year member of the Tonawanda congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Frances M.; four sons, Charles, Michael, James and David; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m.  Saturday, Dec. 10, in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 481 Brighton Road, Town of Tonawanda.
