Wesley Edward Mercier Jr., 73, of Hardwick died Monday, March 1, 2017, in the comfort of his home after a lingering illness. His family was at his bedside.

He was born in Hardwick May 14, 1943, son of Catherine (Donaghy) and Wesley E. Mercier Sr. He attended Hardwick Academy.

On June 16, 1962, he married Betty Jean Dimick in Montpelier.

As a young man, he was employed as a house painter for Paine’s in East Hardwick. He worked for the North Montpelier Woolen Mills and drove the mail route from St. Johnsbury to Hardwick for Kenneth Brown. He later drove a mail truck from post office to post office, delivering mail throughout central and northern Vermont. He drove a snowplow for the Town of Hardwick until his eyesight failed and he was forced to retire in the early 1970s.

As a pastime, he cut brush to make cedar oil for Kenneth Lafont.

Wesley was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Hardwick. He enjoyed music and played in the Star Route Band for more than 10 years in the Hardwick and Barre area. He also enjoyed walking and being outdoors, and having Phil Berube and Lee Donaghy as Skype friends meant a lot to him.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; three sons, Dennis Mercier and wife Colleen, Dean Mercier and wife Kelley — all of Hardwick — and Dana Mercier of Burlington; daughters Sherry Tudhope of Morrisville and Sheila Fournier and husband Daniel of Hardwick; sisters Florence McArthur and husband Galen of South Carolin and Lucille Fecteau and husband Claude of Englewood, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three aunts; one uncle; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family services are planned at Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Hardwick. Northern Vermont Funeral Service in Hardwick is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Lamoille Area Cancer Network, 198 Farr Ave., Morrisville, VT 05661.
