HERRIN — Opal J. Smith, 84, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

Opal was born June 25, 1932, in Big Rock, Tennessee, on June 25, 1932, the daughter of John Harvey and Sarah (Beck) Cheatham.

She married Willis Gene Grant in 1951. To that union, five children were born, Sarah Grant, Kassie Skywatcher, Wanda Brush, Martha Harris, and Brenda Grant. She later married Guy Walter Smith in 1968. Together they had one daughter- Guylene Conner. She is also survived by seven grandchildren; 12 great- grandchildren; and her sister, Reva Cutsinger.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one grandchild, three brothers and six sisters.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the Marion Congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Opal was a homemaker. She was the yard sale queen for her grandchildren’s clothes. She enjoyed laughing and spending time with her good friends. Opal will be remembered as one who was always giving of herself.
