In March, 2017, there were reports that the Russian Justice Ministry has plans to label Jehovah’s Witness as an ‘extremist organization', thus banning the church.

According to The Sun, a lawsuit was filed at the country’s Supreme Court. The court hearing for this case started on April 5, 2017.

Since then, there have been four hearings with no proof from the Ministry of Justice's attorneys to support their claims to shut down the church.

Meanwhile, reports say that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is seriously bothered about Russia's intention to ban the religion.

Museum Director Sara J. Bloomfield said,“The Holocaust teaches us the dangers of state-sponsored targeting of any group.

“While what is occurring in Russia is not at all comparable to Nazi Germany, it’s important to remember the Nazi Party perceived Jehovah’s Witnesses as a threat to the state and subjected them to persecution.”

Another reaction is a statement from the Russian branch of Jehovah’s Witness. It read, “Millions of believers all over the world consider the ministry’s actions a big mistake.

“If this lawsuit is successful, it will entail catastrophic consequences for freedom of religious worship in Russia.”
