75th anniversary - Mr and Mrs Ernest and Marjorie Hellowell

Mr and Mrs Ernest and Marjorie Hellowell, of Lower Bentley Royd, Sowerby Bridge, are members of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the town and they were inundated with cards and good wishes from family and friends on their special “gold diamond” anniversary.

Ernest, aged 96, was born in Sowerby Bridge while Leeds-born Marjorie, nee Clay, 94, moved there with her family when she was 13. They met at the Legend Ballroom, Sowerby Bridge, in 1942, and married at Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge.

Ernest’s six years’ second world war service in the Coldstream Guards included Dunkirk and the North Africa campaign. After demob, Ernest joined the Halifax Police Force, then worked on the buses and afterwards delivered carpets for Crossley’s Carpets, until it closed, then Humphries Carpets and Riding Hall Carpets. A keen car restorer and enthusiast, he owned around 54 cars over the years.

Marjorie brought up their family - they have a son, Michael, daughter, Sue, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
