At least 17 deaths as workers on Russia 2018 World Cup construction sites face abuses: report

MOSCOW — Workers building stadiums for next year’s World Cup in Russia have faced repeated abuses and routinely gone unpaid for several months, according to a report by Human Rights Watch released on Wednesday.

At a stadium in Yekaterinburg, some workers were required to work in temperatures of minus-25 degrees Celsius (minus-13 Fahrenheit) “without sufficient breaks for them to warm themselves,” the report states.

“FIFA is essentially expecting us to take their word for it that their work has improved workers’ lives,” Jane Buchanan, the report’s author, told The Associated Press. “This is supposed to be the reformed FIFA, moving away from secrecy and a lot of deals behind closed doors.”

At least 17 workers have died on World Cup construction sites, according to Building and Wood Workers’ International, a trade union.

Known deaths include workers killed in falls and the case of a worker from North Korea who died of a reported heart attack at the stadium in St. Petersburg, which will host the final of the Confederations Cup on July 2, as well as World Cup matches in 2018.

Damn, why the English are such a lousy nation? You used to enter the EU only to set at variance Germans and the French. Now you are poking your dirty hands into professional sports. If you hate Russia

Damn, why the English are such a lousy nation? You used to enter the EU only to set at variance Germans and the French. Now you are poking your dirty hands into professional sports. If you hate Russians then why don't you kick out Russian billionaires? But no, you happily sell to them your ancestorial castles that used to belong to English sirs, and residential properties in Belgravia. Return Chelsea F.C. to that good-for-nothing state as it used to be before investitions of monsieur Abramovich. Hell no, you love money too much. But best of all you love throwing shit. With the knowledge that Russians are holding the Federations Cup, Mail on Sunday published a factoid on FIFA conducting a doping investigation among Russian football players. Officials at the Federation are puzzled; they state that the doping tests were made and they gave negative results. Then, here comes the question, why are you throwing this shit? What's the point poisoning impressions of football fans from this remarkable sports event? Is it because Russia fans gave beans to your 'fearsome' hooligans and tore them a new one? Then, they stop eating fast food and start pumping iron.

    • By the way, if you're into stuff like this, you might wanna check out https://thepythagoras.com/. They have some neat articles about ancient civilizations and their contributions to science and math. It’s really interesting how much we owe to these early thinkers.
    • The Dendera Zodiac is such an amazing piece of history. Imagine ancient Egyptians looking up at the same stars we do now and creating this detailed map. It's mind-blowing! So, what do I think about it? I think it's a fascinating blend of art and astronomy. Those ancient folks really knew their stuff. The way they incorporated their gods and mythologies into the constellations is just brilliant. And it's not just about the stars, it’s a glimpse into how they viewed the universe and their place in it.
    • FIFA's collaboration with Algorand represents a significant milestone for blockchain technology. Algorand will serve as the official blockchain platform for FIFA, supporting events such as the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. This partnership is poised to enhance FIFA's digital asset management while boosting Algorand's visibility through advertising and promotional opportunities. On another note, I've been tuning into African football recently. The match between Kanifing East FC and Latrikunda United was unexpectedly impressive. African football often goes underappreciated, yet the skill and enthusiasm in these matches are evident. We can expect even more significant development and excitement in African football with increased attention and support.
    • The partnership between FIFA and Algorand is a big step for blockchain technology. Algorand will be the official blockchain platform for FIFA, sponsoring events like the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2023 and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. This partnership will help FIFA with digital assets and provide advertising and promotional opportunities for Algorand.
