AUBURN — Russell Lyndon Curtis, 69, of Harrison, passed away on Monday, June 19, at the Hospice House in Auburn, after a brief illness. He passed away peacefully with his devoted wife sitting by his side.

Russell was born on July 21, 1947, in Lewiston, to the late Richard and Isla Curtis of Oxford. Russell attended schools in Oxford. In April 1964, he met the love of his life, Cynthia, whom he later married on Jan. 18, 1967. He went on to join the U.S. Marine Corps and did a tour in Vietnam. After his service ended, he came home to his wife to start their family.

Russell had many local jobs, including working with his brother, George, at V.H. Ashton's, but his favorite job was driving a truck for Superior Concrete out of Auburn.

Russell served as an elder in the Norway Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for many years, where he was loved and will be deeply missed by all. He was always there for anyone in need and would never accept anything in return other than a promise to listen if one of the Jehovah's Witnesses ever knocked on their door.

He also loved to spend time with his family, going for drives with his wife to New Hampshire or the coast, eating lobsters or grilled steaks with his son, playing card games with his granddaughter, Dallas, and joking with virtually anyone who would listen to him. Another large part of his family were the dogs that he and his wife rescued and loved deeply. Though it was always a dream of Russell's to own a Bernese Mountain Dog, they chose instead to give their love to dogs who needed a family.

Russell is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Cynthia (Hemingway) Curtis; his sons, Michael Curtis of South Paris, and Joel Curtis with his wife, Kelli, of South Paris; his granddaughter, Dallas Curtis; stepgranddaughters, Celine Robitaille, Ashley Martin, and Kayla Robitaille; his great-stepgrandsons, Damon Martin, and Augustus Robitaille-Thieme; his brother, Daniel Curtis of Oxford; and sister, Mary Ann Fifield of Norway.

He was predeceased by brothers, Peter, Richard, Harvey and George; and by his sister, Gerry Smith.

The family also wishes to convey their heartfelt thanks to the Hospice House in Auburn for their care of Russell in his final days, and also all those who showed their loving support to both him and his family.
