SAVANNA—Jacob “Jake” Hofman, 98, of Savanna, Illinois, formerly of Herrick, Ill., and The Netherlands, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna.

Jacob was born Aug. 19, 1918, in Warfhuizen, Netherlands, the son of Teeuwes and Klazina (Holtrop) Hofman. He married Patricia (Pieterke) Buikema on Feb. 25, 1941, in the Netherlands.

Jake served as a private in the Dutch Army during World War II fighting for the Allied Forces.

In December of 1956, Jake and Patricia came to the United States, where they settled in West Chicago.

Jake was a member of the Suburban Teamsters of Northern Illinois and worked as a driver for a disposal company for 33 years, retiring in 1985. Jake and Patricia then moved to Herrick in 1991 to be close to family.

Jake was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Congregation. He has always kept his Dutch citizenship and his family was most important to him. Jake enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, fishing, and walking his dog, “Patches." Jake believed that if you worked hard you would always do well.

Jake will be dearly missed by his two children, Karen (Art) Goodlick of Herrick and Ted (Marilyn) Hofman of Savanna; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Patricia; his oldest daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Dukes; a son-in-law, Tom Dukes; and a granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer Hofman.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Greenville with Bill Stringer officiating.
