La prohibición de los Testigos de Jehová entra en vigor en Rusia

El ministerio ruso de Justicia anunció este jueves que incluyó a los Testigos de Jehová en su lista de organizaciones vetadas, lo que supone la entrada en vigor de la prohibición de este movimiento religioso considerado "extremista" en Rusia.

La prohibición, vigente desde el 16 de agosto, afecta a la organización y a sus 395 centros diseminados por el país, según el comunicado del ministerio.

La Corte Suprema rusa prohibió en abril pasado a los Testigos de Jehová, a raíz de una demanda del ministerio de Justicia que consideraba que el movimiento mostraba "señales de actividad extremista". La decisión fue confirmada en apelación el 17 de julio.

El fallo allanó el camino para la liquidación de los 395 centros locales de los Testigos de Jehová en el territorio ruso, donde la organización reivindica unos 175.000 miembros, y a la incautación de todos sus bienes.

Los Testigos de Jehová anunciaron su intención de recurrir al Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos (TEDH).

Fundado en 1873 en Estados Unidos por Charles Russel, el movimiento de los Testigos de Jehová se reivindica cristiano.

Para la poderosa Iglesia ortodoxa rusa, los Testigos de Jehová son una peligrosa secta debido, entre otras cosas, a la prohibición de transfusiones sanguíneas para sus miembros.

Rusia ya ordenó en 2004 la disolución de una rama de la organización, una decisión que el TEDH consideró "injustificada" antes de condenar en 2010 al país a pagar 70.000 euros (82.000 dólares) en concepto de daños y perjuicios.
