Subject: Release of Dennis Christensen

Dear [Prime Minister Rasmussen] [Minister Samuelsen] [Ambassador Winkler] [Mr. Casale],

I, [your name/s here], wish to appeal to you on behalf of Mr. Dennis Christensen, who was unjustly detained in Oryol, Russia, for exercising his right to freedom of religion and/or belief and his right to freedom of worship, and freedom of assembly.

Mr. Christensen, a Danish citizen, was placed under arrest following a police raid in Oryol, Russia, on the evening of 25 May 2017. The authorities raided a peaceful religious service of JehovahÂ’s Witnesses, collected copies of identification documents of all attendees, and seized their electronic devices.

Mr. ChristensenÂ’s arrest was executed following the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation on 20 April 2017 which prohibited JehovahÂ’s Witnesses from practicing their religion and categorized them as an extremist organisation. Mr. ChristensenÂ’s arrest violates the protections afforded to him under international law. Such an action cannot be justified as being necessary or proportionate.

On July 20, 2017, the Sovietskiy District Court of Oryol extended the pretrial detention of Dennis Christensen to November 23, 2017.  If convicted, Mr. Christensen could face a sentence of six to ten years of imprisonment. I ask you to continue to engage with the Russian Federation via your embassies, diplomatic, and economic and trade talks, we urge you to advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Christensen.

I/We am/are hereby urging the authorities of your country to release him.

Respectfully yours.
