Informacji tej - oprócz portalu TMZ - początkowo nie potwierdzały w oparciu o swoje źródła żadne inne media. Amerykańskie portale podawały jedynie, że biuro szeryfa w hrabstwie Carver w Minnesocie rozpoczęło śledztwo w sprawie "śmierci jednej osoby w domu ikony muzyki". Kilkanaście minut później informacje o śmierci Prince'a potwierdziła agencji Associated Press jego agentka prasowa Yvette Noel-Schure. Okoliczności śmierci Prince'a nie są na razie znane. Jeszcze później telewizja CNN potwierdziła doniesienie o zgonie artysty u jednego z członków jego rodziny. Informacje o śmierci legendarnego wokalisty przyszły tydzień po tym, jak nagle trafił do szpitala. Jego rzecznik powiedział wtedy, że piosenkarz walczył ostatnio z groźną odmianą grypy. Zaskakujący artysta Prince zawsze zaskakiwał innowacyjnością i miał ogromny wpływ na rozwój muzyki, w której sam łączył jazz, funk i disco. Jego największymi przebojami były m.in. "Raspberry Beret", "Little Red Corvette" i "Purple Rain". Od lat 70., gdy rozpoczął karierę był postrzegany jako jedna z najbardziej kontrowersyjnych postaci sceny muzycznej, "zawsze jednak strzegł swojej prywatności" - napisała o nim agencja Reutera.

Sprzedał ponad 100 mln płyt na całym świecie, zdobył siedem nagród Grammy, a w 2004 r. został włączony do Galerii Sław Rock&Rolla. W 2007 r. w czasie finału Super Bowl stworzył jeden z najbardziej niezapomnianych występów. Jego ostatni album, "HITnRUN: Phase Two", miał premierę w grudniu ub. roku.W ostatnich miesiącach - aż do ub. tygodnia - Prince przebywał w trasie koncertowej za oceanem. W 1993 r. Prince zmienił swoje imię i nazwisko na pseudonim artystyczny, jednak potem wrócił do tego, jakie dostał od rodziców. Piosenkarz urodził się 7 czerwca 1958 r. w Minneapolis w stanie Minnesota jako Prince Rogers Nelson. Reżyser Spike Lee pożegnał się z nim na Twitterze i Instagramie, pisząc w czwartek: "Tęsknię za swoim bratem. Prince był zabawnym kociakiem. Miał świetne poczucie humoru".
