84 yr. old Brother Billy Green Bush Experience in California

Billy Green Bush was a character actor on everything from M*A*S*H to The Dukes of Hazard, but the 84-year-old divorcee didn’t have homeowners insurance when the house he’d built decades ago burned down. He’s still having trouble qualifying for FEMA assistance, which is capped at only $34,900, because one of his adult children is also on the lease. Bush told me he doesn’t have the stamina to rebuild himself, and he doesn’t trust anyone else to build to his standards. He’s been living in his 1957 Dodge van since the fire with his dog, and the van was having trouble starting when we spoke. But even in these circumstances, his fire story slid easily into evangelism when asked about his plans for the holidays. “You should give thanks every minute of every day,” he said, “I’m a Jehovah’s Witness, and every day is Christmas for me.”

@Jack Ryan Maybe he wasn't in good standing with his local congregation? Or fading?

I have seen some witnesses receive housing aid and assistance but you must be in good standing.

Since he is a divorcee it stands to reason there was once a negative mark on his record which may preclude him from getting assistance from the local congregation.

I know there is plenty of money among the brothers in CA so that is not the issue.

FIRST thing one needs to do is GET OUT OF CALIFORNIA, and get to a State where what money he DOES have will go twice as far.

I lived in California several years, all up and down the state, but I would NEVER go back.

For new construction he could probably multiply his buying power by six to ten times, but at 85, you only need a home to last perhaps 20 years at the very outside, and as a practical matter, 10 years.

I would not subsidize unrealistic expectations, based on fantasy.
